Lore
Opalwing stalked her way through the dense underbrush of the Viridian Labrynthe, body held low to the mossy forest floor and right hand primed on her sword.
There had been a huge burst of Nature magic in this area earlier; she was to go find out what happened, then report back ASAP--especially if it involved suspected Beastclan operatives.
Raising her head slightly, she let the scents of the forest wash over her senses. She couldn't quite smell anything out of the ordinary, but there was something off right there...
"Hiya!'
Jumping back several feet, the Wildclaw explorer whipped around with a ferocious snarl towards the source of the sound.
A Coatl, wearing an intensely-decorated earthen masque and nothing else, walked up to her with a genuine discombobulated stagger to their step, seemingly unaffected by staring down one of Sornieth's most deadly predators.
As they approached her, Opalwing began to pick out various bumps, bruises, and scorch marks on their coat. That, combined with the wonky sway in their step, tipped her off that this newcomer was in no position to challenge her, or even try to win a fight against her. She sheathed her sword and relaxed her posture, standing up to her full height as they approached.
"Man, so, like, this is the Overworld, huh?" The Coatl, wings abuzz, poked her playfully. "It's not so bad. Twenty years here will be a breeze!"
"Who are you," she responded, stepping back slightly from the Coatl's curious touch (making sure not to run into any trees as she did so). "And what are you doing here?"
"Oh, my bad," this Coatl exclaimed, spoke Standard Draconic (with a surprising--and suspicious--fluency, she noted), "you Overworlders have such different manners!"
The newcomer held out a paw expectantly.
"My name is--" the sound of a mountain stream, chilled with the water from an early snowfall's melt, trickling through a glade of shimmering autumnal trees in every shade of the rainbow. If one were to drink of it, the water would be exceptionally sweet in taste, and the oaks and the birches would invite one to meditate on the passings of time with them.
"What," she deadpanned, staring them straight in the eye.
"My name is--," they repeated.
Opalwing tilted her head, staring into the Coatl's saturated green eyes. "Can't pronounce that, buddy."
"Oh!" They face-pawed. "My bad, you Overworlders wouldn't understand my true name."
True name? Straightening out, the Wildclaw's haunches tensed.
"Call me..." they tilted their head and twirled around in a circle, "uh, AutumnusDulce! Yeah, that should work!" They nodded their head vigorously.
The masque didn't move.
"I'm...Opal," the Wildclaw invited warily.
Constantly referring to Sornieth as the Overworld, speaking draconic like no Coatl should, implying that they'd been banished here for some unknown reason, and an unpronounceable "true" name--it was all too close to the ancient and mythical stories of the "fair folk" for her liking. If there was one thing she learned from all the tales, it was never to give a fae (or a suspected fae) a full name, no matter how harmless they first appear.
