Memory of the Ancestors

I awoke to find my father beckoning me out of my lair. Looking out, it was still night. I asked what was happening. My father responded: "I have chosen you as my heir to the title of The Keeper. As it is the tradition of the Keepers, the current must give the next a view of the family's past under the cover of the stars. Come, Demonwing." I followed him, making no sound to wake the others. Walking on, I discovered the Waterfall, where it is said that the words and dreams of our ancestors flow. Father strides on, and I kept after. I followed him to a staircase. It was cut out well from the grey rock around it , yet was worn by time. Climbing the stairs, father told me of the first caretakers of the Riverside, how they discovered its existence, and how they learned how to take care of it.

The ancestors traveled on the border of Shadow by the water, and saw how the River glittered. They were curious as to how this was possible, and touched one of the stars floating on the River. It shone with brilliant light and the ancestor saw his father's face. He wondered if all the stars were of the past, and discovered that they were. He needed to know more, and he felt a presence in the sky, coming down to meet him. A powerful being, unknown to all including the deities, spoke to them about their destiny and the memories of their bloodline. The ancestors saw the River, and knew that the images of their predecessors should never be forgotten.

As father explained this, he gestures to carvings in the rock beside the staircase. Carvings and paintings of dreams decorate these walls and a few depict the ancestors creating the foundation of the clan. Reaching the top of the stairs, I gazed upon the River. I'd never seen it from up there before. And as I gazed out upon the water, I noticed where the glitter stopped. Father explained why. "Down the River, there lies a beast. His name is the Dreamstealer. He spends his time watching memories flow along the waves, and catch those we forget. When the eclipse occurs, he rides out of the waterfall on his horse named Nightmare, and he attempts to take the source of the River." Father spun to face me. "This is why we care for the River, so the past never dies. Let's leave, I expect you to understand how we came to be." I got back to the clan. Everyone was still asleep, having their own dreams. I landed on my bed of leaves, closed my eyes, and slept.

Summary

The Keeper is the moderator of the Clan of the Fallen Dreams and its activities. He is the descendant of unknown parents who previously took care of the Stream and passed the responsibility of it to him. He has adventured with his parents any times to see the history of the past Keepers. She is also transgender.
