"...time yet for a hundred indecisions,
And for a hundred visions and revisions..."

Like Emrys, he had no known parents. Both eggs were found unattended and hatched within a day of each other, one cracking open to reveal a tundra, the other a nocturne. Though taken in by different families, they remained connected by the shared mystery of their origins, and they were taught and trained together by the clan's elders. Perhaps it was because he was born second, or perhaps it was because he was a nocturne and instinctively copied the actions of others, but Echo grew up following Emrys around and doing everything the tundra did. When Em's eyesight was corrected with glasses, Echo started wearing them too, even though he didn't need them. As soon as the tundra finished a book, Echo grabbed it from him and read it, or at least pretended to. Whenever the tundra learned a new spell, Echo had to try it too, though he lacked Emrys' natural talent for magic.

Emrys eventually set out to find an island to call his own, a place to build a library and found a clan, and though he invited his friend to join him in his venture, Echo declared that he wanted his own island and his own clan and flew off in the opposite direction. Before they parted ways, Em gifted him with a magical lantern he had made (in secret so that the nocturne wouldn't make his own attempt and accidentally blow something up). The light would always burn brightly, unless Echo willed it to dim, and he could draw upon and wield the raw arcane magic imbued in the flame.

Happy to accept the gift but in a rush to win the "game" (as he thought of it), he darted here and there on his search. Having grown up in a clan largely composed of forgetful tundras, his memory was a bit foggy at the best of times, especially concerning geography, so it wasn't long before he was lost. Instead of finding other islands in the Starfall Isles, he found himself in the Scarred Wasteland.

His extreme adaptability was what allowed him to thrive among the plague dragons. His body was quick to immunize itself against the diseases which ran rampant there, and his actions and customs soon grew similar to his new clanmates. He learned to hunt. He learned to fight. He learned, most importantly of all, how to survive.

When a lightning imperial named Darkshine and a light coatl named Deepsea stopped by his clan to recruit mercenaries to aid them in eradicating a Shade-worshiping cult, Echo was happy to sign up. Once separated from his clan and in the prolonged presence of the two dragons as they journeyed together in the guise of traveling librarians, Echo again began to change. His earlier book-learning reasserted itself as he assisted them with their portable library, and his speech became more sophisticated and refined. He removed the bones from his attire, though the nocturne kept his glasses, for both the coatl and the imperial wore them. Noting that they were a couple, he pondered for the first time taking a mate of his own, though his odd approaches to the various coatls and imperials they crossed paths with left many bemused dragons in his wake, as his courting methods were based on how he saw the long-mated pair he traveled with relate to each other - not exactly appropriate for a first date.

His fighting style began to mimic theirs, the flames drawn from his lantern taking the form of runic circles when he watched the coatl or runed smoke when he observed the imperial. Echo had always privately regretted his lack of magical prowess, but under the tutelage of the two exorcists, he discovered he could see spirits and other hidden parts of the world. Proud of his newfound powers, he kept traveling with the pair once the job was complete. He found he could largely keep up with them thanks to his ability to copy their moves and techniques, though this also rendered him vulnerable whenever an enemy discerned his strategy.

Echo was thrilled when Deepsea announced that they were traveling to the Starfall Isles on their next mission and even more elated when it turned out that they were going to use the island settled by his old friend, Emrys, as a base of operations. As the clan's founder and head librarian, Emrys was likewise delighted to see Echo (still with his lantern, even after all this time) and happy to learn that the nocturne had also become a librarian (Echo didn't tell his friend of the trio's "other" job). Though he never did get his own island, Echo is still glad that he is (in some small way) following in his friend's footsteps, and he's resolved to work behind the scenes to do what he can to keep Em's island safe.

While Emrys and his traveling companions are used to his behavior thanks to lengthy association, the rest of the clan finds the nocturne's echoing behavior a tad annoying, though interactions improved a bit once they realized he wasn't imitating them to make fun - it was just his natural way of relating to others.
