Biography

Rhea
Leader
Female | Asexual | Theme

"I wasn't ready to be a hero. But you needed me."

On the bissextile day, a pair of twin mirrors with scales as dark as the night sky would hatch from their eggs. As they would grow up, one of them would be the epitome of an honorable and trustworthy dragon with a heart as pure as clear water. The other would bring the fall of the empire in which they were born. The twin that brought about destruction would act out. They would claw, curse, spit, and they would be generally unpleasant. The other would be servile, complacent, kind-hearted. A fine young member of the clan.

This is the nonsense spewed by a crazy old prophet three months before the day she spoke of. As she went on about the end of days, the leader of the clan, a huge black skydancer named Terranov, had his scribe take careful notes. The prophet was usually wrong, but Terranov was not taking any chances. When the twins were born, he had them quarantined, and he banished their mother from the clan for producing such vile little beasts. Terranov knew that one twin would be very useful to him, but the other needed to die. He thought of killing them both.

As Rhea and Seraph grew in their little prison, they caught wind of the plan. If neither of them showed signs of evil by their next birthday, Terranov would kill them both. Seraph, unwilling to allow his sister to die for him, began to act out. Rhea watched in blind confusion as Seraph did everything in his power to look cruel. He scratched and bit the guards. He tried to escape the cell. In reality, he was the far kinder of the two siblings. When the female mirror understood his plan, she tried to talk him out of it. But it was too late.

Rhea was dragged out of the cell, all the while screaming and begging for them not to hurt her twin, and Terranov greeted her in the main den. He explained that she was now free to live among the clan. Confused, she asked what would become of her brother. The skydancer seemed enraged by the question and lashed out at her. He quickly composed himself and explained that Seraph would remain in the cell. He promised her that the male dragon would not be killed. He would be broken, so that his evil was destroyed and he could live with the clan.

At first, the mirror didn’t know what that meant. But she learned. When she went to visit Seraph, she saw that the conditions of the cell got worse and worse each week. The guards would abuse and torture her brother, and he didn’t do a thing to stop them. Though he no longer had the strength to pretend to be evil, his fate was sealed. Rhea never knew for sure what they did to him, but he began to retreat into his own mind. He was cold and distant and scared. She would try to reach to him, and he would flinch.

Years of this went by, all the while Rhea was too afraid to speak up for him. Then one day she went to visit him, and he was curled into himself, sleeping. If one could call his restless tossing and turning and whimpering sleeping. When she woke him up, he cried out in terror, scuttling away from her and landing on his wing, which snapped under the pressure. It was the final straw. Rhea stood in front of the black skydancer and demanded her brother’s freedom. Believing her to be a traitor, Terranov declared that unless she was the one to kill Seraph, Rhea would die the next morning.

The next morning did not come in the way their arrogant leader hoped. That night, Rhea broke into the cell and found the courage to free Seraph. She slipped him onto her back and the two of them escaped into the night. Rhea found a guardian dragon willing to ferry them across the sea and take them to the mainland. There, the twins traveled for what felt like an eternity. Eventually they reached the other side of the world, literally. They found the perfect place to live. The beautiful wilderness of the Virdian Labyrinth.

Rhea spent most of her time hunting for profit. This slowly morphed into stealing for profit. And one day, she was asked to kill for profit. Believing in her cause of saving her brother and making sure he was happy, Rhea did it. She became a mercenary. She thought she was doing it for Seraph, when in reality, her deeds only hurt him. Nevertheless, Rhea met Gladion, another mirror who was passing through, and she discovered that mirrors were stronger in numbers. And so she decided to start a pack. Seraph and Gladion liked the idea, so Broken Grove was born.

Rhea now does her best to keep the pack healthy and happy. But she also does her best to keep Seraph healthy and happy. She would trade anything for her brother, and even though he is timid and fearful of her, she loves him beyond a shadow of a doubt. Rhea only hopes that one day, Seraph can forgive her for his suffering.
