THE DEVIL OF THE EAST

The current reigning leader of Zhengyu, its Hari Kmeria. She is a quiet, formidable force who has made ripples throughout history both in matters seen and unseen. Her nature is that of the deep, stormless sea whose surface is bright and without reflection; its depth runs thick with countless currents that threaten to drag one underneath.

She wears a small enigmatic smile, one that never falters nor fades. A picture of elegance in the most literal sense--as if unnatural. Everything from her gestures, her movements, down to her very words can be considered a work of art; not in the sense of grace or beauty, but in that it is artificial and too deliberate. Refined and doll-like.

Her ruthless cunning had allowed for many an Effluvial clan to flourish under her watchful eye. Scythe's only concerns are that of the greater good. It is how she shows her love towards all of her kind. As a leader she seems flawlessly capable, but as a mother she is unavailable, distant and even cruel to those who do not apply themselves.

She is known for staying several steps ahead of her opponents, doing most of her work from the shadows. Her influence spreads far beyond the reaches of Zhengyu like a spider's webs. To most, despite her greater good ideals, she is a villain. She leaves individuals with no choice of their own, drawing in stray souls and even subjugating the strong towards the path of a harmonious homogeny born of endless sacrifice.

Her current attentions are focused on not only pursuing her ideals and governing Zhengyu, but also the development of its heir, the current Tengku Kmeria.

» She possesses an unusual relationship with the current Rei Kmeria, her consort. She never shares her thoughts and he never asks. Despite this lack of communication, their unshakable faith in one another causes their bond to remain unaffected by the test of time. In another life, they would have still found another and lived just the same. Where one is, so is the other. They are almost never seen apart. But if it is not love that holds them together, then it begs the question of what is it that does?

» As a leader: Under her rule, Zhengyu is currently experiencing the longest period of peace within its history. There appear to be no rivals that challenge the throne, no warfare civil or otherwise, the economy is prosperous and its culture has been allowed to expand and flourish. She is seen as a stable and confident leader, one that can inspire a fierce sense of pride and security within her clan. Though beloved, there are few comfortable enough around her presence to step out of line. Something about the Hari Kmeria is entirely disconcerting. She seems to know what is happening at all times, often before anything has even occurred.

» She is the figure responsible for sparking the relentless persecution of Lesser Crows within Effluvial society. The first to give the order and make an example, others quickly followed in her stead until it became ingrained into the cultures themselves. It is her who coined the term "lessers" for them to begin with. She views their existence as that of a weakness upon Effluvial kind.

» As a mother: Scythe is rarely seen by her children, often passing glances and exchanges in the hallways at best. It is not cold, but nothing. There is no open bond nor affection that keeps them closer together than anyone else; nor is there hostility or disgust. Merely nothing. She is polite and distant. The longest period of time she spends with family is during the Winter Lantern Festival, where everyone gathers for a formal family dinner every evening of the week.

» Out of all her children, she pressures Katar the most, due to a combination of his place as heir and his shining potential to surpass both herself and his father. Her involvement in his life subjects him to a great deal of what she considers necessary training, but others might see it more as a form of psychological torture. There is a silent agreement between them that so long as he continues to tow the line and fulfil his duties, she will not interfere with the lives of his brothers and sisters.

T H Ex T R U T H

» Believed to be a foundling and likewise taken in as such, Scythe lived a life within the Autumnal Manor as Kukri's adoptive sister. However the truth of her Autumnal origins can be traced further back within her strawberry red wings as that of the dissolved Dahlia clan.

» A skilled combatant and a brilliant strategist, interestingly enough she is a pacifist at heart and does what she can to avoid a physical confrontation. She prefers to either prevent it altogether or resort to more psychological means of resolving matters. It is this "pacifist heart" of hers that causes her to be excessively cruel the first time when forced, so that others do not find the confidence within themselves to act out a second time.

» She loves her children as much as she loves the rest of her kind. Her love is the sort that runs more deeply than that of each or any individual. Scythe views everyone as a collective, seeking to secure the future of as many as she is able to while still maintaining their strengths as a species. So long as they reach out to her, she will return the gesture and force the cycle forward so that they also look out for others in a similar vein.

» She does not understand the true importance of social bonds outside of something similar to business or convenience. This oversight causes her to neglect its inherent value, if not consider these attachments as a potential weakness that may be one day exploited. This is one truth behind why she treats Katar the way that she does, it is her way of protecting and preparing him.

» Scythe holds a great appreciation for life, strongly believing that everything around her is naturally impermanent; thus much effort is required in order to preserve things as they are if they are to be desired to remain. This way of thinking causes her to always look further ahead than only the immediate present. Her everything is poured into the future and manifests itself as the greater good ideal, making her both selfish and selfless at the same time.

» Far from emotionless, her heart is as full as any other's. However, it operates independently from the rest of her, allowing her to appreciate her surroundings while also carrying out her duties without interference. There is no denying that though the heart is full, it had been warped either somewhere along the way or from the very beginning.
