Evergreen
"Send Nature Noods"
naturemid.png

Evergreen is the gardener of Clan Saturn. Within the Starfall Isles, many plants that are not native to the region wither quickly, as the potent radioactivity will decay the plants that don't have natural protection against the harsh environment. But the Gladekeeper-blessed dragons hailing from the Behemoth wield a power to cultivate and sustain any organism even in the most unnatural biome. These skills were honed under the instruction of The Druids, an isolated commune of Nature dragons, fanatic in their devotion to the Gladekeeper and Her will. The society, however, was not naive to presence of dark magic rising throughout Sornieth, and labored to defend the purity of elemental magic within their Flight while scrambling to hide evidence of its existence. Evergreen was devoted to their cause, but was exiled from the Order for refusing to condemn those innocently tainted by the ancient magic. He was abandoned, left to find asylum for himself, and sought it in Arcane- another epicenter of old magic, a Flight that sought to study and protect the people from it, not try them as heretics for falling into its clutches. The Aetherwoods took him in, where he now resides as the local apothecary and aids in the research of ancient magic.

The Encounter
Evergreen and Glade stumble upon each other in the Starwood Strand, both fugitives in the eyes of the Druids, both seeking asylum in a Flight that is free and welcoming in its social ideals, but deadly in its physical terrain. Despite their wildly different experiences in their place of origin, they reluctantly put their pasts behind them to call a truce.

Evergreen noticed Glade's energy before anything else. The ridgeback's magic seemed tainted, flowing in a dangerous current that one could be easily drowned in. It was powerful, a livewire of erratic mana that flared and surged, that one barely needed an affinity for reading energies to sense. It was spontaneous, daring to be called upon and twisted into things beyond what should ever be possible. They stared each other down, both sets of eyes blazing green, one set verdant and rich, and the others, a yellow-tinted green sick with corruption. Each dared each one another to break the contact first, and it was Evergreen who relented to his own dismay.

Their silence permeated the air, the tension of an indoctrinated Druid exile against bitter disbeliever spreading like venom. “Sent to kill me? Haven’t seen one of your kind in a while. I wouldn’t think the Druids would wander so far into a land reeking of radiation and Arcane filth.” Glade said, a period of pause from when Evergreen looked away. The spiral was stunned by these words. “They exiled me for colluding with the ‘Arcane filth’, and in this place where everything is bent on killing us, why would I waste my time killing you when the radiation will get to you soon enough?” This made Glade pause for just a moment. This was the type of hesitation a warrior would have taken advantage of, and used it to strike. But not he, who had been raised being told that anything that disrupted the peaceful nature of the world was wrong. “Fair enough,” Glade responded. “We will both die if we there is no refuge to be found soon.” And so, they built a fire in a small clearing, and while the ridgeback laid by its warmth, Evergreen decided to instead scale a Stellaflora tree, and twined his tail among its boughs. This way, he would be at an advantage point should Glade retract his offer of companionship. As the bounty hunter slept, Evergreen wondered how they had ended up here.

Oh, what had this dragon done to himself? Unbridled, Glade’s Nature energy alone could have been put to great use, could have been of great value to the cause. But the allure of other magic, magic that was best hidden away and forgotten about, was too strong for him to resist. Evergreen sensed deep into the ridgeback’s energy field, searching for any flashes of memory or traces of recognizable spells it might betray. His vision was suddenly overtaken with visions of runes traced into scales, blood and ink swirling. He heard spells that were stumbled over in a clumsy imitation of an unfamiliar language. All in pursuit of a level of power that one should not possess, that should have stayed buried in the ancient volumes it was from wrenched from. These were the actions of a dragon who had strayed far from the Gladekeeper’s path.

Surely she watched over the ridgeback no longer. Glade had indulged too much in fantasies of himself of a noble avenger, that he hardly noticed his fall from grace and the retraction of any praise he may have been given. The druids knew of his crimes, and had decided he was an outcast. Any dragon in their right mind knew that their word was the one to be heeded. All words of the Druids were wise. Among their common proverbs was "the only staff you shall raise is the one of healing”. Evergreen had set that staff down long ago, and now he held a new one in his hands, one that may be wielded either way. The choice was his, but what was he to do when he had never before been faced with the luxury of choice? Better their shallow lies than the brutal truth, he thought, whenever he questioned the Druids back in the days of the Viridian Labyrinth. Evergreen would be protected there, and to be groomed as a loyal and lowly follower was better than to wither in the outside world. He depended on the Order as much as the Order depended on him to do his duty. Now that Evergreen has escaped their grasps, he could pretend to still be one of them. He could do what they said was best, to avoid this ruinous rogue, return with his scales and hope to be welcomed once more.

But hadn’t Evergreen himself already been ruined just as much? The punishment fit the crime, and if the spiral had both been sentenced to the same fate of expulsion as Glade, then he was as bad as the foe he thought was way below him. The spiral recalled a line the Druids preached to him often. It was one of the few things that made sense. “To take the high path you most make yourself low.” Now that he dwelled on it, Evergreen came to a startling conclusion. Maybe the druids were wrong once more. Those high up in the Order certainly did all in their power to retain their divine authority. Little revelations eased the ex-initiate into shedding his past mindset, to develop rhetoric outside of what he had been so carefully groomed to follow. Now was time for regrowth, for pruning weeds that choked the garden of his soul.

By the light of the dying campfire, Evergreen gazed down again from his Stellaflora perch onto the outline of the now sleeping outcast. He must decide soon whether to flee before sunrise, or to stay the night and continue his travels alongside the ridgeback in the morning. Should he follow Glade, he had no intention to be passive and to be controlled by the rebel. There was nearly nowhere left to go from here, and their relation was mutualistic. They shared a goal as well- finding refuge, and two was better than one when it came to navigation in unfamiliar places. They would travel together, and live among the Arcane. And with this thought, he too drifted off to sleep.

-when he first took refuge in arcane he was immediately overjoyed by the biodiversity, the flora being so different from the shrieking wilds
-He was shy to warm up to the clan and spent days wandering the stellaflora forest collecting plant samples
-eventually opened an apothecary shop selling magical herbs made with Arcane and Nature territory specimens
-lives with Glade in the ruins of a temple that may have been to the Old Gods. It is now overgrown, reclaimed by plant life. The pair put up a small altar to the Galdekeeper there
