______ Rei comes from a long line of warriors, a clan that can trace it’s lineage dutifully back to the first Imperial, the Great Elk herself, Canadensis. Legends told of the hordes she fought back during the Longneck Wars, wielding a broadsword and backed only by her two warrior brethren. It was not until the end of the war that the Great Elk finally settled to start her own family. Originally of Nature’s Ilk, the bloodline spread like a contagion under the ideals of both. And so, the line held true to both worlds: Under our care, the land will thrive as we spread.

______ This belief was central to Rei’s learning, and his tutelage under the Imperial Temeraire led him to understanding at least most of what it meant. He learned the history of war and battle, how the beast clans came to stand against dragonkind at times, the rise and fall of the Shade. Rei even was able to sit with the Council of Elders and pass the tests necessary to grant him the title of Ardent-in-Training, but still he craved more. Andreios wanted to actually know battle itself.

______ Faced with the choice of denying the youngling his wish or letting him go out in the world to learn of his own will, Temeraire had a difficult choice to make. Ultimately, he knew that he had to send Rei away. ”Fear not, Rei. This is how it should be. You are a soldier, destined for great things. You have the blood of the First in you. Under your care, the land will thrive as you spread. I have taught you all I can here. Now I send you to my master. You go to see Cynrik, and learn from the one who taught me all I know.”

___ The sendoff was a joyous occasion, with Rei’s father, Riku, giving the dragonling his banner, while Fermata adorned him with armor befitting the Argent.”Go now, my son.” She told him solemnly, the sending party lively around them. ”Go and find who you are. Find what you stand for. For without a focus, you will fall for anything.” The message was one he heard often, but coming from one who had always been so kind and caring of a mother, it seemed to hold a heavier weight.

___ W ith the sun rising on a new day, Rei departed from those who had raised him with nothing more than the apparel he wore and the sword of his station. Though the Starfall Isles bordered the Scarred Wasteland, it was up to Rei himself to get from where his clan was located in the Abiding Boneyard to where the new clan was calling home. It was up to him alone to survive the arid Wasteland, navigate through the Wandering Contagion. There was no guarantee of his survival once he left the clan, and the idea was daunting, yet liberating. Here were his first steps as an adult, no longer a hatchling to look down on. Here was his test of being worthy. It was the Plague way.

___ By the time he arrived at the Observatory, Andreios had a new outlook on life. He was Stronger, grounded now in the challenges he faced in the Wasteland. He understood the Honor given to him by his clan, the trust he held with them if they believed he could survive alone. He knew the power of Loyalty, and the Undying Featherback at his side was a constant reminder of what true loyalty was. And he knew the need for Kindness, especially when his new clan welcomed him with open wings and helping claws to get him into the lair and assist with the healing he needed. Of course, he insisted that his companion be healed first, but that was just his way. Though his journey was over, his new life had just begun.
