"Snow Flower"
COMMONER
[ DETERMINED | STRONG-WILLED | HOPEFUL ]
It had been a beautiful spring day. The grass was sweet, the dogwood was blooming- big, beautiful flowers that perfumed the air where they sat and fell towards the ground. The sun was warm on Xue Hua’s hair, and the sky was as blue as the ocean and the flowers in the gardens. It was the perfect day. That was what made it so horrible. No one- no one deserves to die on such a beautiful day. She could remember the way Guei staggered and fell outside of the steps of the temple, she could remember the red of the feathers on the arrow, and not much else. It was a beautiful spring day, but it was the worst day of her life, and it wasn’t fair in the slightest. She swore she could feel the arrow hitting her just as hard as it had hit Guei, and in her desperation, she had begged the heavens to take her instead, to turn back time like it was nothing more than a book, to put her between him and that arrow. She knew she was a fool for it, but that little thought took root that day. Maybe there was something she could do.
She visited his temple every day after that one. Every beautiful day, every overcast day, even in the rain- she knelt at the steps, and sobbed. At first, she’d sobbed for herself, for how she missed him. Then, she sobbed for him, for how he would never smell another flower, he would never again walk barefoot in fresh spring grass. Once those tears were gone, she sobbed because of the injustice of it all. He’d been standing in the wrong place at the wrong moment, and it just wasn’t fair. He’d never done anything to deserve it. Those tears were hot and angry against her face, and she liked to imagine that they smoked and steamed where they fell.
It hadn’t been long after Guei’s death when she saw him again for the first time. It wasn’t him, not really, just a lingering spirit- but it was something. And though it wasn’t the same as having him there, not by far, it set a spark in her chest. The idea that had taken root was beginning to grow, there had to be some way to be with him again- but what? They spoke for hours, so close to being together, but it was as if there were a screen between them. It wasn’t the same, and it still wasn’t fair. It wasn’t the biggest logical leap to do something about it, though, and like a butterfly lighting on a flower, the idea struck her. She couldn’t do something about it, no- but someone might be able to. And if there was someone, she would find them. She just knew it.
No matter what happens, I will always be with you. That was what he said as she told him what she planned to do. No bargaining, no telling her to move on like everyone else had- even though she could see the fear on his face. It was some small amount of strength that he could give her, a hand on her back as she faced the road ahead that she knew would not leave until she returned. It was a long, hard journey through the mountains, though. Her feet were swollen and blistered very soon, there were times she could not feel her legs, and not for lack of trying. Just days into the walk, her clothing was nearly ruined, though it wasn’t as if she came across many on her path, and those she did seemed just as broken and exhausted as she did.
But she didn’t stop. She wouldn’t- she couldn’t stop. Not until she had accomplished what she set out to do, that hand on her back promised her as much. And if she couldn’t find someone to help- well. She didn’t want to think about that as she walked, choosing to keep her mind on much gentler things- the way the grass on the mountain grew so wild and soft, how the even the bugs seemed more at peace here. Guei would have loved it up here, she decided, and maybe they’ll take a much more prepared trip into the foothills to appreciate the world together once he was back. It was easier to think of him as away instead of gone, and really, that’s what he was. Away. When the air became thin and breathing became a chore, she kept walking. Away. Away from him, but at the same time, she kept walking towards him. Every nerve in her body was screaming, telling her to turn around and go home, that she wasn’t ready for something so huge and perilous as this journey.
That hand on her back disagreed. She could do this.
She saw wonderful things as she walked higher into the mountains. Creatures that had never seen a human, and weren’t afraid to watch her go by; large mushrooms growing from long fallen trees, bigger than her hands and bright red; and as she neared the point she was sure would be her journey’s end- people. There were people here in the mountains, people who had somehow made their homes in the alcoves and ledges of the stone and snow. Something told her that this was exactly where she’d meant to come, someone here could help her.
"My heart is throbbing
It refuses to disperse
It will never be
The love cannot live
My heavy spirit cries tears
Of pain and heartache
The hurt and sorrow
Will never, ever, leave me
The pain lives inside
My heart is throbbing
It refuses to disperse
It will never be"
