BIRTH
The little mirror female tentatively spread her wings, they were still wet from the egg’s fluids. Drops flew around as she shook her wet body, catching the sun’s light and sparkling in all the colors of the rainbow. When she looked around for the first time, blinking from the bright sunlight, she saw a lush green forest, brimming with life. Small insects were crawling around, birds were singing in the canopy above her and the sweet smell of flowers filled the air. It was a beautiful day. But her instincts told her that something was wrong. There was no other dragon to greet her, to watch her first steps in life. She was all alone. Afraid, she opened her mouth and let out a loud screech to alert her parents to her existence. But no one came. As her screech faded to a whimper, she realized that she was indeed all alone. Scared, she retreated to the safety of a huge life oak tree, struggling to climb up the gnarled trunk. She knew instinctively that she would not be safe down on the ground come nightfall. As she reached the tree’s canopy, she was exhausted and hungry. Hesitantly at first, she balanced on the slim branches but got more confident with every step she took. After a while, she stumbled over a bird’s nest with four hatchlings. Hungrily, she lunged at them. They would keep her fed for a few days. She curled up in a forked branch, covered with smooth moss and soft leaves. As she watched the sun go down, she became determined to find her destiny in this strange world. |
SEARCHING
She crouched down low, attentively observing her prey. The little forlorn hatchling had grown into a strong and elegant predator. She no longer needed to hide in the safety of the wood’s canopy. Now, she was the hunter and her prey had no chance to escape her. Lunging forward in one graceful and smooth motion, she sunk her teeth into the deer’s throat. It did not suffer. But for a while now, hunting had not satisfied her as it used to do. She had managed to survive, struggling to find enough food and not ending up as someone’s dinner herself. She had even given herself a name, Fahlyn, when she met her first dragon, an old traveling Wildclaw male. He had invited her to follow him to his Clan, but she had refused. She knew that this was not how it was supposed to be. Her destiny lay elsewhere. He had laughed at her then, asking what great destiny the Gladekeeper had foreseen for her, a destitute lone mirror. She wasn’t even of the Gladekeeper’s favored breed like him. Fahlyn had left without another word. Since then, she had avoided the company of other dragons, wandering ever deeper into the Viridian Labyrinth. She didn’t know what she was looking for, but she was sure she would recognize it when she found it. |
DESTINY
It was raining heavily when she finally found what she was looking for. She didn’t even realize it a first, she was just glad to be out of the downpour when she had passed the old crumbling stone arch and sought shelter in the huge hollow trunk of an old willow. When the sky cleared, her attention was drawn to a circle of withered standing stones on a nearby hill. Curiously, she left the shelter of the tree and approached the standing stones. She now also noticed the derelict stone buildings standing between the trees. The standing stones on the hill were ancient and strange symbols were carved in their withered surface. As she reached out to touch them, they began to glow in a soft green light. Then the world turned upside-down, she could still see the crumbling ruins around her but there was also another reality, overlapping with the here and now. The ruins were no longer derelict but whole and intact. Dragons of every species and age were wandering around, some busy, some relaxing in the shadows of the huge trees. She was stunned by the beauty and tranquility of this place and cried out in despair as the vision of the past faded away, leaving only the crumbling ruins behind. As she sunk against the cold surface of the stones, a soft breeze caused the leaves in the nearby trees to rustle. She didn’t see the tall Guardian watching her curiously from the edge of the clearing. But when she finally got up and let go of the old stone, she knew that she had found her purpose. She would restore this ancient place to its former glory. |
