The Beast in the lake

She was gliding along the muddy riverbed wondering what had brought such devastation to the dry land as well as the meandering streams she had been traveling. Rock fragments were lying everywhere, small trees had been uprooted and the riverbed itself was just a muddy wasteland. There should have been plants and shoals of fishes swimming around but instead, the river was devoid of life. Nevertheless, she had been drawn here, following her primal instincts. She could feel that her charge was close by. Several frogs and toads had become her companions during her travels. Small amphibians had been attracted to her since she was a small hatchling. Others had sneered at her, but she liked their companionship. She could feel that they were afraid of something that was lurking in these strange waters. There was a stench she could not identify and the faint smell of blood. Dragon blood. As she slowly slid through the riverbed, she noticed a huge willow tree standing beside a crumbling stone arch. The tree looked battered, but unlike his smaller brethren, it was still standing upright. And beside the tree stood a huge Guardian. Though she was hidden underneath the water, he seemed to look straight at her. She sighed. This could only mean that she was crossing into another Clan’s territory. She had hoped her charge, whatever it may be, would not involve dealing with a foreign Clan. This could complicate things, but she could feel her charge close-by. Thus, she had no choice. Slowly, she emerged from the stream, water and mud rolling off her smooth skin. She always felt rather awkward moving on land, but she did not want to be perceived as a threat hiding in the murky water.

The Guardian, a huge brown male with astonishingly emerald green eyes, looked at her rather sternly. He was cladded in thick leather armor, and strange horns were protruding from his forehead. The pale green runes on his body were shimmering in the light of the setting sun. He would be a formidable opponent. But she wasn’t her to fight. “Greetings, stranger. You are crossing into the territory of the Forgotten Sanctuary. You are welcome here if you seek shelter or trade goods. But beware, we do not tolerate violence or insurgent behavior. You will adhere to our laws or face the consequences.” His voice was a deep rumble, his posture a threatening one. She did not doubt for a minute that he would enforce his words with violence if necessary. Her voice was steady as she spoke the old greeting: “My name is Rivulet and I’m but a lonesome wayfarer. I’ve come to humbly request shelter at your home and hearth. I swear that I bear you no ill will and that I will abide by your laws and customs.” The Guardian relaxed and responded “I, Tyr, Warden of the South, grant your request and welcome you, Rivulet, into our Clan. I will escort you to our Clan’s leader. But you have come at a time of mourning. We will have to lay to rest one of our own tonight. She was taken from us way to early by some foul creature.” Rivulet followed Tyr through the marshland in the direction of a huge towering rock cliff. A waterfall rushed over its edge, pouring into a huge crystal-clear lake. It looked very serene, but as she moved closer, she saw two heavily armed dragons, a Pearlcatcher and a Coatl, guarding the lake. Their gazes swept over the water’s surface constantly. The warm sensation in her body intensified. Yes, she had found her charge. “What happened here?” she asked. Tyr stopped and looked sorrow-stricken at the quiet water of the lake. “Heather, a young coatl, died here last night. She was attacked by some foul creature while swimming in the Seer’s Pond. It almost took the lives of two others who tried to rescue her. We have never seen such a creature before. It must have been washed into the lake when Selene called the water from deep below the earth’s surface to wash away the Horde. And now we are discussing how to best hunt it down. But first, we have to pay our respects to Heather.” Rivulet stared at the lake. “You don’t need to discuss it anymore. I will hunt down this creature for you and bring you his head. From now on, no evil creature shall find its way into your waterways and threaten your life ever again. Because I shall be your Warden of the Waterways.” Tyr looked at her incredulously. But her words had been spoken with such force and determination that he did not object. "I'll take you to Fahlyn, our leader. She will consider your...request."

The lake was deep, way deeper than anyone could have guessed who had only gazed at its surface. There were caves and even what looked like tunnels in the rocky walls below the water. The walls were glittering in the sunlight; “There must be crystal inclusion in the rocks reflecting the light.” she thought while she was swimming deeper into the lake. It was a beautiful sight. But the stench of the creature which had settled here was besmirching it. Its evil aura was almost palpable. Then she finally saw it. Lurking in the shadow of a huge rock was a creature, half octopus and half giant snake. It was watching her menacingly. The many tentacles were bearing suckers and sharp-looking hooks. The poisonous sting which had ended poor Heather’s life was hidden somewhere in the tangled mass of tentacles. It was a dangerous and impressive beast. But this was her home now, protecting it was her charge and this foul murderous creature had seen its last day on Sornieth. Furiously, she roared out and lunged at the creature. It was a fierce fight. The creature tried to wrapped its tentacles around her to draw her close, hoping to pierce her skin with its poisonous stinger. Meanwhile, its sharp hooks were ripping deep wounds into her flesh. But she was warrior. Water was her element. And she was determined to win this fight. Rivulet was faster and more agile than the giant creature. She nimbly slipped through the clutching tentacles, avoiding their bone crashing grip. Though its hooks caused deep wounds, she was never trapped. She furiously bit and clawed at the tentacles, ripping them apart one by one. Soon, the water was clouded with dark smears of blood. She could feel the increasing fear of the creature but it only spurred her on. Finally, her massive jaws closed around the creature’s neck. It let out a gurgling scream while she sunk her teeth into its flesh. The beast was dead. She had fulfilled Fahlyn's conditions and was now the Clan's new Warden of the Waterways. Smiling contently, she pulled the creature's dead body to the surface.
