Lore that needs to be written out and updated ;-;
There's a deep, shifting horror in a dark pit in the caverns. Every new moon, he goes down alongside Farthori to subdue its waking throes.
That monstrosity is a seven-headed emperor - composed of his father's body, as well as those of a few old friends.
After discovering the sheer raw potential of his power, Betel nearly begged from his father, the king, the freedom to leave and travel to far off lands in order to experience their differences, and master his own surging arcane strength. However, his pleading turned to frustration, and anger tore the two apart.
After Betelgeuse's rather belligerent departure, the old king was never the same again, and the task of ruling fell to his daughter. She reigned admirably, and under her rule, paths, air routes, all infrastructure and relating policy was reformed, leading to a massive boom in trade and prosperity.
Imperials guard the truth of emperors, terrified that others will find out and ostracize them. As such, when the king died, the few imperials that cryptically recommended he be buried away from the rest of his family were ignored. He was bereaved of his son in life - how could they separate the king from his wife and daughter in death?
- No one could stop the emperor's rampage - even Farthori, the king's old rival turned friend and confidant couldn't stop it - he was presumed to have died and been absorbed into the emperor as his corpse was never found
- After the course of ten days, a lone magician walked into the midst of the fight to shield the grief-stricken remains of what was once a mighty clan
- Legend says that there were tears in both his eyes and those of the beasts's
- And that as he whispered "I'm sorry," the force of his will pushed it back and it fell, deep into the earth, sealed underground in a proper tomb
- But the damage was done. The fortress, this gilded, glimmering, towering city fell, and the area was abandoned to the wilderness once more, until a pair of stragglers named Verity and Gable fell through the caverns and built their own home on the ruins of what remained
