The Turning Tide

x
Dragons in Porto who have lived there for a long while will often say the clan's history can be slip between before and after the Navigator Guild settling in. Those who only moved in after the Guild was already set in will instead say that you can pretty much split any happening as 'Before Cypress arrived' and 'After Cypress arrived'.

For a long time, the Navigator Guild lent dragons money and resources. Need a roof fixed? They helped you. Perhaps a new gene? Don't worry about it! Just want to pay for den renovations? Hey, we got you covered. Every dragon knew they were loaning money, but the Guild never asked for their money back so most never bothered paying back.

Which is why most remember the very day Cypress showed up. In the following morning, a couple owing the Guild huge sums of treasure was found beaten and bruised ashore, and the message was very clear: payback time is now.

The Guild doesn't always want money, per se, sometimes your alliance will do. Sometimes, just knowing you support and side with them covers their expenses. Regardless of what arrangement you make with Farris and Nephilim, you can be sure that should you fail to meet your end of the deal, Cypress is there to ensure you will, in due time. He is as dangerous as his fame tells, although a lot more patient than dragons will paint him to be. Of course he would rather you just upheld your end of a contract, and he will be reasonable if you aren't able to, but he has a job to perform and you knew you would have to pay the Guild back at some point, right? Because of his job as a loan shark, he's earned the nickname 'the shark' and people on his list are usually called 'shark bait', making a very local insult.

Nothing in life comes for free.

What crime did the dragon commit, by Khaos101
Cypress has been gathering the remains of past dragons in the plan to prepare them into something suitable that he can wear, but he's going to be arrested if a dragon sees him wearing the bones of a past loved-one. That's just upsetting.

Favourite dragon above, by Vuldovah
Gonna have to go with Cypress here; I just love his whole vibe?? I do love me some shady, morally-dubious men in pretty clothes haha. And is colours are stunning, they're some of my favourites! Also Noxtide is always just... mwah, 10/10 Honestly just looking at your entire lair makes me feel both envious and extremely poor ;o;

Blood in the Water

by the fantastic Joywing

xxxxxxxThe salty air in the palmwood shack, formerly free-flowing across the wide open waters, had become still. On one end of a ragged plank table was an elderly Skydancer, her head feathers ruffled and ajar. Her claws gripped the clay teacup, filled with long-stale fluid. She was courteous of course. She adhered to all of the codes of hospitality, offering food, drink, and shelter to her guest.

xxxxxxxEven if her guest was the Shark.

xxxxxxx– Miss...Ophelia, yes? I believe that you owe the Guild an explanation, – The bony ridgeback took a long draw on his cigarette, observing the wear and tear on the client's abode. – Or more importantly, payment. – He exhaled through his pointed nose, thin grey ash another stain on the already-messy floor.
xxxxxxx– Y-yes, I am beyond grateful for the Navigator Guild's help, but I need a bit more time to- – Her stammering was cut short by a pointed glare.
xxxxxxx– Your time is up, Miss Ophelia. You need to pay up. – The Ridgeback firmly stated. – Or is the aid we gave to you and your hatchlings not even worth that much? – The Shark leaned in, the tip of his nose inches from her face.

xxxxxxxHe watched the tears well in her eyes, and her breath hitch in her throat. He was a patient dragon, but even he had his limits. For the recalcitrant debtor, he would only wait as long as he needed for them to crack.

xxxxxxx– I...I don't have the money. How could I, with such a big sum? All of my earnings are going to feed the hatchlings. There's nothing I can do. – She admitted.

xxxxxxxCypress wanted to roll his eyes. It was always “please Mr. Cypress” this, and “I don't have the money” that. What mattered was the principle of the debt, something that these debtors never seemed to understand.

xxxxxxx– Show me the rest of your possessions then. If there is really nothing you can sell, perhaps you or your children can provide a service instead. – The Ridgeback moved back, rising from his chair to survey the collateral.

xxxxxxxReluctantly, the greying Skydancer guided the collector, showing the beaten tin pots of the kitchen, and the matted bed upon which he slept. Partway through the trip, Cypress raised a claw.

xxxxxxx– Where is the nursery? You have not shown it to me.
xxxxxxx– This...the hatchlings have nothing to do with this. – the Skydancer answered curtly.
xxxxxxx– On the contrary Miss Ophelia, I believe they have everything to do with the debt. If you spend as much on these orphans as you say you do, there could be something of value there. – The Ridgeback responded, flicking his claws idly. – I can assure you, I will not hurt a single scale on your children. You however...are a different story.

xxxxxxxThe skydancer could only gulp.

xxxxxxxThe wide eyes of many hatchlings turned to the round door as it flung open. The Ridgeback had to duck down to enter, his head almost hitting the ceiling of the tiny cove. It was not luxurious by any means, but compared to the rickety shack, it was lavish. Mossy beds lined with feathers and even a soft carpet furnished the repurposed cove. Cypress surveyed the room, noting the atmosphere of tension and dread. There was something here. He could smell it.

xxxxxxx– Do you mind telling me what is in that cranny? Cypress stated, his claws pointing to a nestled crack in the wall..

xxxxxxx– It's nothing important. Just a store for snacks and food for the children. The skydancer quickly asserted.

xxxxxxxThe collector narrowed his eyes. He would have to make her admit it then. He gently pushed his way past the gawking hatchlings. Even they understood the weight of the situation, making way for their intimidating visitor.

xxxxxxx– Really? I didn't know you all ate dragon eggs, – He commented, hefting a weighty brown object from the crevasse. – Unless you mean to tell me that this is just a particularly large coconut. – He gestured to the egg, the glowing green shoot at its tip betraying its true nature. These are worth quite the pretty penny, you know. It will more than cover your debt if sold. It could even buy some nicer quarters for you and your children. Now I understand if you don't want to sell it yourself -

xxxxxxxBefore Cypress could finish his offer, the mother snapped back.

xxxxxxx– That's not the point! That is a child, my child! How can you think about selling it?

xxxxxxxShe was scarcely holding back her tears, her voice trembling with outrage. Her legs tensed, facing down the intruder in her home. In that moment, he fear had evaporated away, leaving only righteous fury. She would have thrown herself at her much-larger foe, done anything to stop the events that were to unfold, but with a simple flick, the skydancer was struck down. There wouldn’t be any lasting injury, he made sure of that, but the message had to be sent.

xxxxxxx– You don’t have room to argue, Miss Ophelia. Either you give up this luxury, or you and your children are forced into work. Given the size of your debt, I’m sure that the latter fate would be quite unpleasant.

xxxxxxxWith a practiced gait, the Shark turned to leave, his prey in his claws.

xxxxxxx– You can expect the excess funds to be sent to you soon. I believe our business here is concluded. – With nary another word, or moment of remorse, he left, leaving behind only shocked silence in his wake.

xxxxxxxUnder his menial mental calculations of potential sale and profits, he could hear the sound of gentle weeping echoing from the broken home he had left behind.

The Shark himself

x
Despite being either feared, avoided or hated, Cypress is obviously the talk of the town. His wife is the bubbly and energetic Jenny, and most know quite well that while the Shark is known for never stepping out of line when it comes to his job, he has lost his temper in the past when people either hurt or dared trying to manipulate Jenny. It's a non-spoken rule in town that you do not mess with Jenny Lovewell, or you become shark bait very quickly. She's his beloved and pretty much his world and he sees no reason to hide that being very vocal about how much she's important to him. She has to be, as she's pretty much gambling all his hard earned money away and he never says a single word about it. She has him wrapped around her finger.

cyjen-by-cosmo.png

While Cypress is a level headed and tempered dragon, he's known to have a deep hatred for the other members of the Navigator Guild above him on the work ladder for being favourites of the Guildmasters, like the Navigator Sisters and Severo mostly Severo though. He'll be often seen scheming about taking over their job or becoming even more important inside the guild. When he gets drunk, bad mouthing the four is pretty much the only thing he'll do. Most dragons, of course, will steer clear from him when he's out for a drink but hey! Cypress only has a problem with you if you're owing the Guild money a.k.a. in the way of his job. Faction leaders usually have a great time getting him drunk and feeding into his obsession of scheming against the other Guild members.

He's a fun drunk to watch, always one second away from starting a bar brawl. Gilly loves using him to draw attention away from her illicit activities. Cypress doesn't really care. She pays her bills without asking for loans so it's not his problem how she's earning money. So what if it's with an illegal fight club? Not his **** problema. :v:

Cypress really doesn't need anymore problems.

You so fresh to death and sick as ca-cancer
You were sorta punk rock, I grew up on hip hop
But you fit me better than my favorite sweater, and I know
That love is mean, and love hurts
But I still remember that day we met in December, oh baby
