Ishina :// courier dragon and messenger

A dry and discreet tundra with many feelings and a lot of insecurities. Coming from an lonely background, Ishina has trouble socialising and tries to occupy her time with her work of courier to all of Porto and nearby clans. The only people she properly interacts with are other Faipur members, specially Hakim, Amra and most of all, her surrogate daughter Kirara.

Despite being a bit of a wallflower, all citizens in Porto agree she's very capable and a great worker. It takes a while for her to let you call her by her name though. Lots and lots of insecurities.

Ishina has a nickname for all members of the caravan!

  • Kirara — Kirara
  • Hakim — the scarred pearlcatcher, later scarred Wildclaw
  • Amra — the young nocturne
  • Sirabad — the ocean snapper
  • Hama — the elder snapper
  • Jamila — the sun and moon pearlcatcher
  • Taliha — the skydancer brat
  • Ayla — the healer fae
  • Mahir — the frowning ridgeback
  • Priti — babypearl
  • Rayan — Mr. Sunshine

Storm at Sea

by yours truly, crappy non-native English included

xxxxxxx"I don't do clanmates."

xxxxxxx"We heard that quite well the first time you said it. You made that quite clear when you started working for us, tundra."

xxxxxxx"You don't have to be rude, my love. Forgive my mate, lovely."

xxxxxxxShe took no offense. Never did.

xxxxxxxThey were all there tonight. They always were, of course. The snapper with ocean eyes had been sharp and rude as always. The old snapper and the young nocturne watched her with kind eyes. The other pearlcatcher with the sun on her skin and the moon on her eyes stayed out of the negotiations. They followed the scarred pearlcatcher's whims.

xxxxxxxTonight they were at the Starfall Isles. The last time she found them, they were at the Behemoth. Only the deities could tell where they'd go next.

xxxxxxxShe would find a scroll right there, at their camp, informing of their next location. They had beautiful tents and an inviting meal. Warm blankets and clean water. Every week she provided them with courier services and every time, the pearlcatcher covered in scars invited her to stay. Again today, as expected.

xxxxxxx"You could stay, lovely." — The pearlcatcher said.

xxxxxxx"I don't do clanmates." — She repeated.

xxxxxxx"Wonder what's taking you so long then, seing as your payment is done." — The ocean snapper said, clearly annoyed. The scarred pearlcatcher smilled.

xxxxxxx"Patience, my love." — He huffed a small laugh. With an elegant move, he invited her with his wing.

xxxxxxxShe took off flight. She didn't do clanmates.

***

xxxxxxxMost dragons hatch on a nest cared for parents. Others, have their eggs snatched or abandoned and hatch to no one. The clan she originally hatched on had no plans for her and she took off to be on her own as soon as her wings were strong enough.

xxxxxxxThey didn't bother naming her. Many dragons whose destiny were exaltation didn't have names and she was just one of many. But she'd rather be alone, than on exalt armies. She was a clan of one single unnamed dragon.

xxxxxxxShe didn't do clanmates so it wasn't a problem. There was nobody to call her out.

***

xxxxxxxStormy nights. Thunder roaring loud and bright every couple of minutes. No rain — a sign that the lightning coming from above was the wrath of its element and nothing else.

xxxxxxxShe was flying carefully over the Sea of a Thousand Currents. It was getting too dangerous to keep flying and once the storm started, her fur would get too heavy.

xxxxxxxShe thought about the scarred pearlcatcher. They had settled on a bigger clan. They had a fixed arrangement and an even nicer place to stay.

xxxxxxx"I don't do clanmates. If I stay even for a night, that idiot will get the wrong message." — She voiced to no one, making the choice of facing the thunderstorm longer, so long as she didn't stay with the pearlcatcher and his caravan. She feared not wanting to leave if she stayed and she didn't do clanmates.

xxxxxxxShe flapped her wings and saw a small flock of the strange looking dragons she kept seeing all day. A new breed, perhaps. She couldn't know and it was not like she cared. She would ask at her next stop.

xxxxxxxThe flock flew below her, closer to water surface. It was singing a cheery song, dissonant with the thunderstorm raging above them. She tundra watched as the flock caught tailwind and soared, and to her surprise, one was left behind.

xxxxxxxShe thought of calling the flock out to wait but they were catching distance.

xxxxxxxThe single one left behind struggled to fly over and above waves.

xxxxxxx"If you doesn't pay attention to what you're doing, you're going to get struck by lightning and drown..." — The tundra said quietly as if the little one could hear from that distance.

xxxxxxxIt wasn't her problem. She couldn't care less.

xxxxxxxShe allowed herself to plane over it from above and the wee one caught a bit of speed ahead. It would increase the distance between them and then decrease. She concluded it was a hatchling. It would still take it a few months to be strong enough to fly steadily for long.

xxxxxxxShe watched it from a distance. It wasn't her problem, she repeated to herself. She couldn't care less.

xxxxxxxThunder roared from above. Lightning struck the little one, now gone beneath the surface of the waves, sinking within seconds. In a heartbear, water. She flung herself to the depths as the little creature sunk fast. Her paws touched it and she felt a surge or electricity jolt through her body. Her arms felt sore, her paws grew numb.

xxxxxxxBubbles came out of the wee one's nostrils. It was going to drown.

xxxxxxxShe felt the shock as she took the creature to her arms. She felt her arms grow numb as she carried it out of the water and to the skies again.

xxxxxxx"Hang on, little one! Don't give up!" — She said to no one, the hatchling long passed away.

xxxxxxxWhat should she do? What should she do?

xxxxxxx'Hakim. Hakim and his caravan. They have a healer.'

xxxxxxxShe flapped her wing, taking to the east and to the place the caravan had settled, a merchant town called Porto.

xxxxxxx"Is it dead?!"

xxxxxxx"Patience." — The fae said in her monotone voice while working her magic.

xxxxxxx"Will it make it?" — She pressed.

xxxxxxx"Stop calling her an 'it' and I don't know yet. I am doing what I can..."

xxxxxxx"What happened?" — The ocean snapper asked.

xxxxxxx"Thunderstruck and started drowning. Saved her, had nowhere else to take her." — The tundra shifted around impatient. The huge ridgeback that was the fae's mate pushed her away.

xxxxxxx"Go rest. You look tired. I will wake you up when she wakes." — Hakim said. "You'll only get on Ayla's nerves and tire her out if you stay and that will make recovery longer."

xxxxxxx"I will come heal your arms after I am done with her." — The fae, Ayla, said.

xxxxxxxThere was nothing else she could do. The sun and moon pearlcatcher took her in that night. She slept a restless slumber.

***

xxxxxxxTwo days passed. Her arms healed and no sign of the wee one recovering. She breathed but that was all. Three days in. No improvements to her condition.

xxxxxxxShe started losing hope. It wasn't her problem, she told herself. She had work to do on nomadic clans. It was time to leave. Four days in. No signs. Five, six, a whole week past and the little one was still unresponsive.

xxxxxxx"You know. You said she was struck by lightning. Maybe she needs another shock? She may be going through magic withdrawal from being exposed too quickly to too much of it. Maybe she just needs a bit of Lightning magic." — The young nocturne, Amra, said.

xxxxxxx"How do I even do that."

xxxxxxx"Ask Hakim. He may have. He sparks when he flaps his wing. Has plenty of magic to spare." — Hama said, offering her a share of food. The tundra ate silently and sought the pearlcatcher during the afternoon.

xxxxxxxHe was sleeping inside his den, cooped up with the ocean snapper, Sirabad.

xxxxxxx"Hakim. I need your help. Amra thinks if we force lightning magic back on her, she might wake up." — She said in a single go and quite fast to hide the embarrassment, she did not want to ask him for a favor.

xxxxxxxHakim smiled at her.

xxxxxxx"Amra has the craziest ideas, doesn't she?" — He laughed, the snapper didn't. Sirabad trusted Amra entirely. "Very well. I will do it."

xxxxxxx"I'll pay you, for your services."

xxxxxxx"You don't have to."

xxxxxxxThey arrived at the den dedicated exclusively to the banescale — as they discovered they were called.

xxxxxxxShe wanted to watch but Hakim started flapping his wings, and electricity jolts and sparks started flailing around. She took a few steps back and a deep breath and with a gulp, she left.

xxxxxxxShe couldn't bear watching.

xxxxxxxIt wasn't her problem, these dragons weren't her clanmates and the banescale hatchling was nobody to her!

xxxxxxxShe left the den, took to the skies. It was time to leave. She flew over the horizon. To the line where the sky met the sea. To beyond the domain of that merchant town. An endless ocean beneath her.

xxxxxxxShe hovered the area where she had found her. If whatever Hakim was going to do failed, then all hope would be lost.

xxxxxxx"By all waters beneath me, let her live. Bring her back. May Tidelord let Kirara live."

xxxxxxxShe stopped, flapped her wings.

xxxxxxxWhen had she named the little one?

***

xxxxxxxShe landed. Silence. She took a deep breath. Approached the terracota building the caravan lived in. Heard voices, whispers.

xxxxxxx"What took you so long?" — Amra said, taking her by the wing with her own and pulling her to the banescale's den.

xxxxxxxAnd there she was, awake and flocking around and about, Hakim smiling at her and playing with her.

xxxxxxx"And there's your savior! Ishina, don't you want to introduce yourself?"

xxxxxxx"Ishi... I'm... What?" — She asked, eyes on the little one who now looked at her.

xxxxxxx"Well you never gave us a name so we just came up with a way to refer to you." — Amra said. "Is there anything else we should call you instead?"

xxxxxxx"It's fin-"

xxxxxxx"Did you save me?" — The banescale baby asked. Interrupted her.

xxxxxxx"Hm. I... I... Suppose?"

xxxxxxxThe banescale baby flocked closer and wrapped her tiny wings around Ishina's paw.

xxxxxxx"Thank you. I was scared."

xxxxxxx"Y-you were very brave, to be flying alone on a storm like that! Very brave. Wild to the bone!" — She half-joked and half-meant it.

xxxxxxxBut the banescale seemed happy to hear that. She spruced up her wings and raised her head.

xxxxxxx"Like mother, like daughter!" — Hakim joked but he gave a defiant smile at Ishina's embarrassment. "We were quite curious. What did you have her for a name, Ishina?"

xxxxxxxThe banescale lifted her eyes to Ishina, anxious and eager for an answer. The tundra was taken back years. She once asked some dragon from her original clan that answer, but he never gave one. She was one of many unnamed dragons on her way to exalt armies and that was all.

xxxxxxxBut now she was Ishina, and that wee one was her responsibility. She couldn't do it alone. She would need help. Support Hakim and his caravan could provide. They would have to be clanmates, for the sake of the banescale baby.

xxxxxxx"Kirara. On the night I found you, I named you Kirara."
