Personality: Despite her upbringing as a noble, Shyael prides herself on being a free spirit. She abandoned most of her personal belongings in favor of traveling the world and meeting all kinds of new people. She can hold a conversation well with practically anyone, and is able to charm herself out of most situations. However, she has few close friends and prefers not to hold steady relationships, as she is skeptical of others' true intentions and would rather not put her trust in outsiders. She also tends to get defensive of her opinions, and usually acts on impulse, even if it is undesirable. While she doesn't really care what other dragons think of her, she wants to make an impact on the world--what exactly, though, she's not sure. Description: Shyael is thinly built for a pearlcatcher, and is also rather lightweight. She can frequently be seen wearing her mane in braids. She has a dark stab wound scar under the right side of her ribcage. Blackened tendril-like markings expand out and around it, due to its dark magic origins and likely connection to the Shade. She always wears several layers of clothing, as well as jewelry and beads. Her ears are pierced in multiple places. It's always easy to hear her coming because she carries so many trinkets and gimmicky items in her satchels. Lore: Shyael was born to a wealthy noble family in a small-sized village. Their manor was set on a large plot of land, so their house was a decent distance away from the town and rather secluded. Shyael was rarely allowed to leave the manor, and what little she learned about the outside world was from reading books in her family’s libraries. She was, for the most part, allowed to roam freely within the walls of the manor, but there were several rooms she was forbidden from entering. For a long time, she tried to excuse it as normal and fair, but as she aged, she began to doubt her family's true intentions. She understood that her parents were likely very busy people, and she didn’t want to think selfishly--their work had to come first. But she still felt that she at least deserved some form of explanation, especially when she was older. She had managed to catch fleeting glimpses of these forbidden rooms--there were thousands of books inside of them, written in a language she could not read. The runic markings and imagery led her to believe they were related to dark magic, but no matter when she tried to investigate, her mother would always be around the corner to dissuade her and keep her away. Her parents were rarely around because they were so consumed in "important family matters," as they explained it to her. Because of this, she began to feel contempt towards them. It was a bit easier for her to sympathize with her father, Raffyr, because he genuinely tried to be a parental figure in her life when he was around. But her mother, Leslynn, was difficult to reason with. They rarely ever spoke face to face; they generally communicated through letters and the manor’s servants. Leslynn didn’t make much of an effort to involve herself in her Shyael's life, and let her figure things out for herself, for the most part. Shyael didn't know anything about her, and it caused her to both resent her and fear her. When she turned 11, she was permitted to leave her family's land every few months to see the rest of the town. Rarely, her father would accompany her, but she was usually escorted by a servant. It astounded her to see so many different types of dragons all in one place. She became fascinated by the outside world, particularly the local groups of performers and musicians. She decided one day that she wanted to live a life as exciting and free as they did. She even stumbled across an old lute in one of her family's storage rooms that was in playable condition. Over the course of several years, she worked on teaching herself how to play it, despite not having access to sheet music or proper lessons. She had to learn how to play it from listening and watching other performers. To this day, she is still unable to read most sheet music, and instead plays entirely by ear. Shyael had turned 16 years old when she finally worked up the nerve to talk to both of her parents directly and tell them that she wanted to leave. She expected them to fight her over it, but they hardly reacted at all. Her parents’ non-reaction ended up hurting her worse than if they had refused to let her make the decision herself. To her, it felt that they were confirming her worst fear, and that they didn’t care or want anything to do with her. She left the very next day without a goodbye, managing to tag along with a group of traveling performers to finally get away from her home village. The group did not stay together very long before splitting off on their own paths. She made a living off of doing odd jobs and occasionally playing for crowds or facing off with other musicians in bardic challenges. Shyael has traveled all over Sornieth since her departure, going wherever the wind takes her--the only territory she has yet to visit is that of the Icewarden. She is a more temporary resident of the Clan of Wandering Skies, only staying for a couple months at a time before heading off again on her own. She has had several lovers across her journeys, but none of her relationships were able to stay together because of her attachment issues. But it doesn't bother her all that much--the ever changing expanse of the world is what she cares the most about. Trivia: • Shyael is based on my Dungeons and Dragons character of the same name. I created her for my very first campaign! • Her alignment is Chaotic Good. • I wrote a short story about her (as a half-elf, not a dragon), you can read that here if you're interested. |
