Painted Stars had a long and joyous (as far as anyone can tell) life with his beloved Paper Moon. However, their happiness couldn't last forever, and Paper Moon fell ill and shortly after, died. A pox had befallen his family. His children fled, or died, or went to seek penance with the Earthshaker. All but his eldest, whom first fell ill, taken by a rotclaw. He regularly returned to his parents' tomb at Cairnstone Rest, where his mother lay rotting in a deep hole with his father, Painted Stars, who unable to cope with the loss waited for his own death.

But it never came. The fae's grief was strong and it drew death to him, but also something... more. Maybe it was the fae's love, maybe it was the disease that struck his family down. Whatever the cause, before his love completely crumbled away, she resurrected.

She attacked him. Both lovers had trained and lived together as long as they'd been alive, and they moved as if in a dance instead of a fight to the death. The movements of the fae, the gentle brush of his wings against her ribs, the particular flick of his fins that said he loved her more than anything else in the world, gave the skeletal dragon pause. And after she stopped her attack, they came together not as enemies but as lovers again.

Eventually Paper Moon regained some of her self and became more like she had in life. They never talked much with words, but the fae found joy again even though his beloved didn't look or feel the same. They took up back where they left off, traveling the Earth flight territory, although they mostly kept to themselves and stuck to the great underground caves and ravines.

He rarely left her side again, afraid that he'd never find her if he did or that she'd forget about him completely the next time they did meet.

The fae assumed he hadn't been affected by the pox that struck his family. However, he had. Although his appearance did not rot away as did the tundras of his family, he was a carrier of the plague that attacked his family, the virulent strain infecting his pores and magic, and all those unfortunate enough to stay in close quarters for long.
