Life, Love, Loss, and Songs.
Eirande sighed, mindlessly flinging scrawls of ink across the parchment she was writing on. She couldn't get a single word in her head straight. It had been ages since she did storytelling, and she had just arrived in this clan and had been clad in silks and riches. She didn't want to interrupt this peaceful afternoon.
Annoyed, she got up and paced around her empty den. The Skydancer was a wandering sort, and she knew that in a day or two she was bound to be found wandering in the woods. She wanted to sing. It was like a song was stuck in her throat.
Searching through her memories, she remembered that beautiful ballad that she had composed some years ago. "I'll get a rose for your scales," she mumbled.
Until this day Eirande didn't know what possessed her to leap onto the rock on which Northwind, the leader of this clan, would announce something or recite a story, but she did it. She flapped her wings, grappled onto the rock, and perched delicately on it.
"I know..." Eirande whispered, and then turned up the volume a bit. "I know I'm new here." Dragons peeked out of their dens or stopped what they were doing and looked up at her, slightly startled.
"But I'm a wandering sort. I sing. I tell stories. And most dragons don't know the stories behind the storyteller. So listen up and I'll tell you one."
She cleared her throat.
"I'll get a rose for your scales,
we'll dance beneath the willow tree.
We'll run down the well-worn trails,
and have wild adventures just between you and me.
Let's sit beneath a starry sky,
let's watch the sunrise together on that hill.
We can remember days gone by,
on those mornings cold and still
And when you take your final breath
When your life is claimed by Death
When all is said and done
I will sing your soul to the winds, my only One."
Eirande took a shuddering breath and let her tense wings relax. Can't be a performer if you don't have the guts, she reminded herself.
The dragons around smiled, and some began to clap and flap their wings. She saw Northwind smile. "It seems we have found a new loreteller," her expression seemed to say.
Eirande carefully climbed back down and grinned as widely as dragonly possible and her melodious laugh pealed through the sky. Maybe brighter days were up ahead. She could move on.
