Biography

lightning_1.png Location:
Baikonur Agency Headquarters (BAHQ)
Job:
Cosmonaut candidate

Once upon a time there was an idiot genius named Mark Watney. But then he got stabbed by Mars and stranded there. But he got picked up by the crew of Ares 3.

And then Hermes, their trans-planetary transport vehicle, didn't dock properly with their descent module to go back to Earth and they all died.

The thing is, after you die in this hypothetical universe, you get reincarnated. And usually that means the universe takes your memories, stores them elsewhere, and starts you off with a blank slate.

That didn't happen to Mark, though. Because stats. And even if something is only .00002% likely to happen, with a really slim margin of error, after happening continuously for 13.77 billion years, that .00002% is going to make itself known. Well. As it turns out, there's a .00002% chance of not having any memory loss between lives.

So while his crewmates forgot most of their lives, Mark remembered all of it.

ALL of it.

So now he's completing astronaut training AGAIN to get used to how dragon body because what ELSE is he supposed to do? Sit around on Sonrieth like a pleb derg or something?

"At least after I died, I got reincarnated as a f***ing dragon. That's pretty neat, I guess. Except now I'm on a planet where dragons and magic are the norm and everyone's more interested in my humanity and the idea of a world without magic. Sigh. I guess the universe loves forcing me to hang out on alien planets where I'm the only person of my species.

And you know what this space agency's 'clan leader''s favorite type of music is?

Goddamn DRAGON DISCO!!!

I think I'm in hell."

headcanon: The mask that Watney wears is heavy, and the vision in it is very narrow. Occasionally, when people sneak up beside him and start talking to him, he swings his head to look at them and hits them with the snout of his mask - this happened more often when he was first 'put into' his new body. Getting used to that tunnel vision mask can be a real pain.
Question-A-Day wrote:
Well, he spent a lot of time somehow convinced that the rest of the Ares 3 crew (aka his astronaut buddies), who also died, would be living among the other dragons of Sonrieth. Keep in mind that it took a lot of Arcane magic to even prove that his memories of being a human weren't delusions, and that Arcane magic hadn't been used yet, so no one was really convinced there was any Ares 3 crew at all. The clan leader, Soyuz, who had raised him, eventually got in an argument with him, because while his dragon body was an adolescent, Watney himself was an adult, and he didn't understand why people wouldn't let him leave on his own to find his crewmates. Soyuz told him that it was because he was still a child, and, rather snidely, added that he needed to grow up and forget about his imaginary astronaut friends.

...Yeah. Didn't go so well. So Watney left.

Watney, for all his 36 or whatever years as a human, was still basically a hatchling as a dragon. He didn't know Sonrieth at all. He narrowly avoided being hit by lightning while escaping the Shifting Expanse and flew westwards as far as he could. He landed in towns all over Sonrieth, asking around for his crewmates by name, but could find them nowhere.

He had reached all the way to the Starfall Aisles and looped backwards and traveled northeastwards when finally gave in somewhere near the border of Dragonhome and the Viridian Labyrinth. He collapsed to the ground out of flight and sobbed for hours. He couldn't handle being alone on another planet where he was the only human ever to have visited. He was still sobbing when the sun finally set, and the deserts of dragonhome grew cold. He had to find shelter, and fast. Luckily, he was taken in by another clan.

The clan was an ancient Earth clan, but their ancientness wasn't a matter of bloodline or purity. It was simply what they found comfort in. The clan leader herself was an ancient Snapper, and she and her wife, a Ridgeback, personally invited Watney into their home. They made space for him and made sure he was comfortable. But eventually, they started asking Watney about who he was and where he'd come from, and he answered. He told them everything, and they listened... and believed him. They were the first dragons he'd told his story to who he could tell believed him.

In turn, the dragons of the clan told to him the vivid history of Sonrieth. They told him everything there was to recount about the ages and the Pillar and the deities and the shade and how dragonkind had shaped the world around it. They told him all about the different cultures of Sonrieth and how they developed and came to be.

Eventually, Watney had to leave. He was an astronaut, and he wanted to return to the Baikonur clan so that he could go to space again. So he bid farewell to the Earth clan that had housed him and flew home a lot more comfortable with the fact that he's a dragon now. He's stopped searching for his crew, but he views his existence as a dragon as a new part of his life now, and he's okay with leaving his human life behind.

Meh, that's a bad way of putting it, but it's 10 minutes to rollover.
DREAM OUTFIT FOR WATNEY!!!

Thanks for @Drakeo1903 for getting me a bunch of this!!!
