C Y R R E L
THE BLOODIED THIEF

"EVERY MORN AND EVERY NIGHT
SOME ARE BORN TO SWEET DELIGHT.
SOME ARE BORN TO SWEET DELIGHT,
SOME ARE BORN TO ENDLESS NIGHT."

Although he was born in the icy forests of the Snowsquall Tundra, the domain of the Icewarden is a place that Cyrrel has never known.
Taken in the night by a dragon that had no idea the chest she stole contained a dragon hatchling instead of the gold she desired, Cyrrel grew to adulthood deep in the heart f the Tangled Wood, far away from the frigid floes and frozen plains of the Ice Flight.

He was raised by the dragon that stole him, a sly spiral by the name of Saliére, who trained him to be her apprentice in crime.
As he grew in age, so did he in skill. With his nimble fingers and slight body, he quickly made a name for himself in criminal circles, able to get in and out of a locked room, surrounded by guards, in broad daylight, without disturbing a single speck of dust.
In the world of thieves, escape was an art and Cyrrel was a Virtuoso.

Saliére always kept a close eye him; even when sending him out on jobs or cons, she would assign one of her numerous lackeys or spies to accompany and watch him. This – coupled with the fact that she was incredibly secretive when it came to both his past and hers – troubled him, but he set asides his doubts, as he loved his mother and wanted to make her proud.

But one night his curiosity got the better of him, and he broke into her study, hoping to find some sort of family tree, or journal, or something that would tell him more about their family.
Instead he found records that described his kidnapping and subsequent training as a thief, and stacks of papers that detailed plans for different burglaries. Each of these papers contained blueprints for the target’s lair, the route of the burglary always ending in the nursery of the lair.
In that moment, he realized that Saliére had never seen him as her son, the way he saw her as his mother, but just as an asset for her to use and expend for her own gain; an asset she now wanted to recreate.
Feeling angry and betrayed by this revelation, he confronted Saliére when she returned. When she saw the papers he’d found and realized that he’d discovered her secrets, she attacked him.
During the fight, Cyrrel managed to gain the upper hand because of his size and, in his state of mindless anger, grabbed Saliére’s sword from her side and killed her with it.

Despite the knowledge that she had not loved him, he was overcome with grief over the death of his mother. But, now filled with a new determination to find the family he was stolen from, he pulled himself together and began to look for clues.
Unfortunately, before he could find anything that could help him, he was discovered by some of Saliere’s men – forcing him to run.

Desperate to escape his deed and fearful of the revenge that would undoubtedly follow, Cyrrel left the Tangled Wood and fled deep into the forest of the Gladekeeper, constantly pursued by his master’s followers. He kept flying and flying, until his wings could no longer hold him, so he began running.

But he couldn’t keep running forever.
Eventually, when his mind and body became too tired to continue, he stumbled blindly through the dense growth, unaware that he had entered uncharted territory. Lands that were too dark and unforgiving to be traversed by the typical dragon. His dizzieness led him to unthinkingly set down against a large tree and to just waited for his pursuers to catch him.
As he leaned back, Cyrrel's senses returned, to reveal that in the endless darkness his confusion mistook as the familiar shadows of the Tangled Wood, this tree was glowing.
Startled, Cyrrel jumped to his feet and whipped around, then immediately froze in stunned silence.
Set into the trunk of the tree he had been leaning on, was in fact a door.

The door looked ancient, the moss and ivy spreading across it almost making it look like it had grown from the tree itself. The frame, however, appeared to be made from rough stone, and it was covered in glowing runes cut deep into the surface that glowed through the overgrowing moss who threatened to spoil it's shine.
The only sign that the door had been used recently were the numerous fresh dragon footprints that littered the ground just inside the threshold.

Cyrrel clawed through the slight opening and stepped into the doorway and peered into the darkness. Beyond the door, a tunnel stretched deep into the tree and way at the end, where the tunnel made a sharp turn and he could no longer see past it, he could just make out the shape of a dragon against the dim, but warm light.
The dragon was far away from Cyrrel, and cloaked in darkness, so he could not make out it’s shape; all he could see was a pair of glowing eyes staring at him from the depths.
As he watched, one of the eyes blinked out for a second, as if winking at him, then the dragon turned and quickly disappeared around the corner.

As Cyrrel stared after the dragon, he felt his feet begin to move instinctively to follow them, but then paused.
He missed the Tangled Wood, his home, and Saliére, and he was loathed to leave it all behind. But he knew deep down that he could never return. All that waited for him there were the memories of someone who never loved him, and the promise of certain death from the ones who had served her.
But here, wherever here was, he had a chance; a possibility for a fresh start.

Knowing he didn’t have much time before Saliére’s men caught up to him, Cyrrel turned around and stuck his head outside, taking what might be his last breath of fresh air for a long time.
Then, he stepped back through the doorway and began to follow the mysterious dragon down the tunnel, the door slowly scraping shut behind him.

And so, that is how Cyrrel, the dragon of both Ice and Shadow, found himself in the Viridian Labyrinth and among the dragons of Auminthina, deep under the roots of the great tree Carramar.

And where his story goes from there, well. That we shall see.
