Blue-green vines coil and twine about the room, thin tendrils catching hold of the rock and supporting the pale leaves as they gather in the gentle glow of bobbing lanterns floating near the ceiling, enchanted globes of pulsing light that mesmerize anyone who stares at them for too long. Silk pillows and curtains cover the cold gray floor and offer comfort for those within, anything not covered by them coated instead with fungus and moss. At one end is a small crystal-clear waterfall, falling silently into a carved wooden basin. Cerdae and flowery foxes dance merrily around the basin's rim, carved by a steady hand who knew his craft well.
Two dragons occupy the den. A dark-colored Pearlcatcher, who holds herself with confidence and poise. She is draped in a velvety cloak that shimmers in the lantern-light, with an orange jewel set in the collar that shines like fire. Flowers grow in her carefully tousled mane and another at her throat. Her eyes gleam with power and delight as she watches her guest, a timid Wildclaw with a dappled hide. The Wildclaw fidgets nervously as she describes her wish.
The Pearlcatcher tosses her head and picks up her pearl. She whispers to it.
”Ripat Niotairs Senur Recnedyks.”
For a moment nothing happens. The Wildclaw stares, enthralled, at the pearl as it slowly begins to glow. A rainbow of colors swirl over its surface, finally solidifying into the image of a graceful striped Skydancer. Images formed and fell away again, faster and faster. The Skydancer, walking through a beautiful garden, swooping through the clouds, relaxed and talking with countless other dragons. In each scene happiness shone from her eyes.
The Wildclaw gasped softly. Unthinkingly, she raised a claw as if to caress the image. Tears sparkled at the corners of her eyes. She stared at the pearl as she spoke.
“Please… that's all I want, a chance for peace. Please."
The Pearlcatcher tucked the pearl away beneath her cloak. She leaned forward and stroked the Wildclaw's cheek ever so gently.
“I can only take you so far… the rest you must do yourself.”
She stood. Her guest didn't move, staring at nothing and lost in thought. The air was heavy with the fragrance of flowers, and barely beneath it, the sharper tang of desire, dreams, and hope.
The Wildclaw, when she spoke, seemed not completely there, as though part of her was still watching the conjured possibilities in the pearl.
“What do you want? I'll give you everything you need, I'll work for you, anything!”
The Pearlcatcher smiled. She had her right where she wanted her. Slowly, feet rising and falling soundlessly, she circled the Wildclaw. She hummed soothingly as she leaned over to her ear.
“Friend, that is not nessecary. All I require of you is a few paltry coins- sustenance for my frugal life. And then… then, my friend, I will give you the tools to shape your life. A new face, a new life, new expectations. You will never have to fight again.”
The Wildclaw closed her eyes and nodded slowly, smiling. Everything she needed…r4beWNc.png
Willow is a member of one of the rarest and most elevated creatures in Sornieth, a shapetwister. She can change the markings gracing a dragon's hide to something completely different, even altering their colors. Hers is a valuable, profitable profession. Vain dragons, bored dragons, dragons seeking a lover, all approach her, hungry for a new look. She obliges, and uses her talent to transform them into their own personal paragon of perfection.
Her efforts are responsible for much of the clan's funds. What she doesn't use for her own comfort, she offers up for the good of the clan. And she doesn't need much. Food is supplied by clanmates, grateful for her assistance. Malachi, clan messenger, brings her exotic fruits and flowers as payment for his new patterning. Rhys, a former Tundra and now a Fae, insists on sharing his insect crops of crickets, mealworms, and honeybees.
Rhys was her first Fae transformation, and it shows. Despite her best efforts, he still retains some Tundra fur on his chest and shoulders, and a taste for plants as well as crunchy many-legged bugs. He actually likes the fluff. Willow was mortified and refused payment.
Willow doesn't just transform others. While she is quite happy with her current draconic appearance, she often shapshifts herself into animals and Beastclans. Her favorite form is an Umbra Wolf, with a Zalis as a close second. As an animal, she mainly runs around and spies on her clanmates. Like many Pearlcatcher, she loves gossip and secrets, and none of the others in the clan can figure out how she knows so much!
Her familiar is a Harvest Hardshell named Fragrance. Known as the Cornucopia Crab, most Hardshells carry fruits in their strange twisting shell. Fragrance carries herbs and other items Willow needs for her magic. Cerdae dust, Phoenix feathers, moonsage and wolfsbane, amone others. All are stored in the crab's shell, within easy reach and easy to transport.
Willow herself is hard to get to know. She surrounds herself with smoke and mirrors, knowing winks and alluring scents. She has a way of knowing exactly what her clients think they want, and manipulating them into giving her whatever she wants. She is fair, however. The way she sees it, if someone is willing to give her the world for her services, then asking for a single fortune is quite the bargain in their eyes. And her skills are well worth a fortune.
She is quite like most Pearlcatchers. She enjoys secrets and hidden knowledge, although she'll never need them. She is very proud of her skills, and her own appearance. She tends to her body like her garden, with care and a knowing eye. She enjoys watching an argument, but the moment anger or irratation turns her way she slips off. Unlike many of her breed, she doesn't despise Imperials. Many of her best clients are Imperials, seeking a new breed to forever assure they will not return from death and destroy everything they once held dear. She plays on their fear and reassures them they're making the right choice.
