Rain battered Bayou’s small body as she crouched underneath a collapsed log, mold biting the decaying wood. Her wings were tucked tightly by her short legs, her large icy-blue eyes gazing wistfully up at the darkened sky. Dark clouds rolled overhead as she scooted further backwards, attempting to shield herself from the oncoming storm. Despite this, her small claws still were soaked as muddy puddles began to swarm around her form. She let out a small squeak as the log began to crunch underneath the force of the storm. Poking her head out, she attempted to locate a possible spot in which she could run to, hoping for a better shelter. Unfortunately, the small hatchling was unable to find a suitable spot, slinking back into the warmth (or rather; lack of warmth) of the log.

She couldn’t tell how long it had been. The rain had long since ended, but she was covered by bark and mossy remains. Flys swatted at her ears and eyes and her body was half submerged in a puddle of both muddy rainwater and blood. Bayou wondered if she was dead. She couldn’t move; her body ached too much to do so. She couldn’t talk, the scales around her mouth were too coated with mud. She couldn’t listen to anything but the sound of her own heart pounding; the only way she knew she had not yet succumbed to her condition. She figured she had died, or rather wished she had. She sat until darkness washed over her eyes once more.

Her body flicked back into consciousness when she heard the squishy sounds of someone approaching. Bayou still couldn’t move, not to mention speak or even open her large eyes. She listened to them stop and gasp, scooping her up in their talons. Their talons were warm, warm, warm to the touch. Filled with careful acknowledgment and love.
“Get Touko; I think they’re still alive.” A gentle, yet authoritative voice commanded, followed by more footsteps approaching.
“It’s okay. You’re going to be okay.” They reassured, holding her back into sleep.

She woke up in a candlelit cavern, moss and vines covering the walls and entrance. Fireflies buzzed around her eyes until they flicked open, causing her to let out a small groan.
“You’re awake.” A strange voice said, slightly bemused. “No, don’t try to move. You’ve got slugs on ‘ye.” Bayou noticed that she indeed had slugs on her. Odd ones that she had never seen. They were glowing an odd mix of both yellow and purple, leaving her scales almost perfectly untouched. She watched with utmost curiousity.
“Gloupes. An uncommon species of slug found primarily in the forest where you were found. Great for healing, terrible for eating.” The voice snickered, coming up towards her. With dark black talons, the dragon plucked off the Gloupes and placed them into a woven bucket, sealing them off from the rest of the world with a simple lid. Placing the bucket in a corner with several other matching buckets, the dragon turned to look at her.
“I’ve got a few questions.” Bayou managed to mumble, rubbing her eyes.
“Oh, I’ve got some questions for you as well, squirt.” The voice said. “Let’s begin with names. What do you call yourself?”
“Bayou.” The voice nodded.
“Name’s Touko. Clan healer, but more famously known as “witch” since I have a cauldron and brew potions. I’ve got myself a cat as well to seal the look.” Bayou let out a small laugh, taking a look at her. She was slightly taken aback when she noticed how absolutely tiny Touko was.
“How old are you?” Bayou questioned, tilting her head.
“Couple hundred years give or take. I’ve been here since the tribe founded. Watched friends and family pass on to serve a greater purpose, while me and my daughter remain. Several generations and you become the clan’s witch along with the crazy lady.” Bayou tilted her head again. Several hundred years? She heard stories on imperials and other large dragons living hundreds upon thousands of years, but never a fae. She was about to question her when she was cut off.
“Well, how are you feeling?”
“Better.”
“Well enough to leave, perhaps? Go introduce yourself to others? Harvest has been sitting outside my lair for a few hours now waiting for you to get up and outta here. Perhaps you should say hello?” Bayou nodded, beginning to finally move her body once again.

It was odd. She fully expected her entire body to collapse and shrivel up, expecting the pain to take control like it did in the forest. She expected Touko to watch as she basically flopped like a dead fish onto the soft, leafy moss coating the ground below. However, she didn’t even twitch when her talons extended onto the moss, wings fluttering in order to roll her long body onto the ground.
“There ya go. It’ll be a bit weird for a while but I betcha you feel good as new, no?” Bayou couldn’t deny her words, she felt much, much better. She felt as if her broken and withered scales were replaced with shiny, new, polished ones. From her wingtips to her tail, she felt newer. Stronger. Better.
