Silhouette had found her all alone in the Tangled Wood. She had seemingly been abandoned, but the Nocturne hadn't yet found out why. As she walked up to her, the Fae turned around, revealing black goop dripping unceasingly out of her eyes. Though Silhouette had been shocked, she was not scared of them, they were just a child after all. She scooped up the tiny Fae and brought her back to the Gardenia clan. Home. Though many were frightened of the hatchling, including the clan leaders, Angelic and GlowWorm, a Skydancer by the name of Sequoia welcomed her with open arms, and the rest of the clan settled down after that.

She is blind from the unending goop from her eyes and mute. She never expresses any emotion, not knowing how to use her Fae crests, but Sequoia and Silhouette always seem to understand anyway. They hope they can one day understand how this miracle happened.

A child found almost entirely alone in the Tangled Wood, Valerie was abandoned due to her frightful appearance and unable to find her own way home. Left all alone due to the neverending drip of dark, murky, sludge that floods her eyes, her only companion was a Gloomwillow Guide who refused to leave her side, its mysterious glowing form drifting around the child, never venturing far. After being discovered during the travels of a dragon, she was brought back to their clan, Gardenia, where she might be better cared for. Sequoia quickly took her under her wing, a natural caretaker and maternal dragon. She helped raise Valerie so she might have the best chance at life as she can, despite her rocky start, until she could take care of herself mostly and rely on the rest of the clan for her needs, gifting her a small plush dragon so she might have some comfort even when leaving her comfort zone. Her Gloomwillow Guide followed and now helps her find her way around the clan and its busy, cluttered, atmosphere.
At times, one can see wispy shadows emanating from her form, manifesting into shapes like hands or grinning faces. Valerie doesn't seem to be very aware of these shadows, not having anything to say when someone questions her about them. Even more alarming, at times the shadows of the natural world seem to stretch towards her when she is in the sun as if wishing to shield her from any light they can, returning her to their cold grasp. These moments are subtle and often go unnoticed, but some watchful eyes of the clan have taken note of them, keeping quiet for now but staying on alert in case of any danger.

Due to Valerie's eyes, she was never able to observe other Fae in order to learn how to use her crests for communication, specifically emotion. To some, this lack of expression can be rather alarming, especially in a clan full of bright and loud spirits. At first, she struggled to find her place among the clan and find companionship but was helped along by Sequoia to cultivate her interests. Valerie spends most of her time hiding away in shadows, preferring to not be out in the sunlight, but has begun her own garden of plants from the Tangled Wood. Just like her, they thrive in the darkness. While she is introverted, Valerie does enjoy spending time with some dragons beyond Sequoia. She spends much of her time listening to Woodfire practice his poetry writing and performances. Though she cannot see as her peers can, his poetry seems to paint a picture within her mind, being one of the few art forms practiced in the clan that she can fully enjoy without any limitations.
