» arrow. the parasite

Uh-oh, looks like this dishonest parasite wandered a little too far from her home lair, (Volrin, #261879) and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return her to her home lair, to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here, or to the hub if you don't want another dragon in return. This is not necessary, but she would be very grateful!

Important note: Please only trade this dragon on travelling dragon threads, as opposed to places such as the Auction House.

Quick PSA from Volrin: I understand that Arrow is a parasite, and exalting her once she's been bred is technically a part of the game, but please don't exalt her if she breeds in your lair! Just put a note up here saying she can't spread the virus anymore. She is a parasite but she's also a traveler, and other users have put a lot of effort into her story who don't want to see that go to waste. Arrow would like to receive a permanent home someday, so if you'd like to adopt her after she's been travelling long enough, just let me know!

Note from CleverDual: Arrow is no longer able to spread the parasite! :D

The Story

Otherworldly Aura

Arrow and Harpoon were siblings who hatched from the same clutch of eggs. They knew ever since birth what purpose they were destined to fulfill, as their mother told them with her dying breath that they were parasites: malevolent, conniving creatures that seduce dragons and infect their eggs with new parasite hatchlings, only to lose their physical form and die shortly afterwards. It was their great purpose in this world, and once they reached adulthood, they would find the urge to attract a mate and further spread their bloodline to be irresistible. Upon finding out the truth about Edge, their own father chased them away from their home clan and into the wilds.

For her entire childhood, Arrow lived with her brother in a writhing forest that served as a border between the Light and Shadow domains. They feared leaving this land and re-entering the dragon society that so desperately wanted them dead, so even into adulthood they remained in the woods, the only place they could call home. Travellers often avoided the forest for fear of the malevolence that imbued its foliage, but the siblings finally got a lucky break when two unknowing Spirals stumbled into their territory. A male and a female, one for both of them... but before they went mating and bringing about their demises, Arrow suggested they had some fun with the creatures that had so cruelly isolated them from society.

First, Arrow snuck up on the male Spiral seemingly called Dusk, grabbing him and dragging him away from his sister; he had no idea she was even there, being totally blinded by the thick fog. After that, she used her shape-shifting abilities (the same ones that allowed her to have the appearance of a Skydancer in the first place) to take on the form of his sister, the magenta Spiral he called Dawn. She tangled herself up in the twisted, spindly branches of one of the forest's sentient trees, staging an attack; sure enough, Dusk quickly took the bait and 'freed' her from the plant, foolishly taking off into the sky with her.

Assuming a form that deviated this much from her natural vessel was far too much effort for Arrow. She finally let go of her Spiral guise, revealing her true self to a now terrified Dusk, and gleefully took the opportunity to mock him.

"Thank you so much for saving me, Dusk!" She cawed, still using his sister's voice.

Traveler's Log

TSqLrzb.png

Arrow relished in the horrified look on Dusk's face. But her satisfaction quickly soured when the spiral suddenly turned and fled with his tail between his legs. So he wanted to play hard to catch. Fine by her.

For several days she trailed behind him, sneaking just close enough to smell his distress before he bolts again. They trailed aimlessly over dry Lightning territory.

Arrow understood Dusk's plan. Tire her out or wait until she gives up. How foolish. She was a wolf, he was the limping stag. Soon he would be the one to tire and she would have him.

At long last, Arrow found Dusk collapsed in a sandy cave. He couldn't even lift his head when she approached. Arrow smirked. Her stupid prey had finally accepted his fate. She would make him suffer for leading her on a meaningless chase.

But the moment she stepped inside the cave a net dropped from overhead. A trap! Arrow struggled with the net. It was incredible thick and heavy, and it took precious seconds for her to rip it to pieces. Dusk was gone. Arrow immediately chased deeper into the cave. There was a crack on the other end leading to the outside, but a dragon couldn't fit in there. He must've flew right past her while she was blinded.

Impossible, she lost him! Such a weak and gullible dragon. He had escaped!

Arrow calmed herself down. Ha! Escape? There is no such thing. She will chase him down until he dies. A parasite has nothing to lose.

Arrow chased the scent of the desperate dragon deep into the Ashfall Wastes. She was so consumed with finding him that she never realized how dehydrated she had become.

After searching for hours Arrow collapsed from heatstroke ten feet away from the mouth of a cave.

She awoke with a start to the drops of cool water dripping on her forehead. A large female bogsneak places a bowl filled to the brim with clear, almost invisible, water nods, and walks away. The water rejuvenates her and she is soon up trying to find her way out of the caves.

On her adventure through the caves of the sanctuary she runs into a stoic female wildclaw. The wildclaw, Bloodmoon, tells her how long she has been out, offers to lead her to the exit, and says she knows Arrow is a parasite. When questioned Bloodmoon tells her about another parasite that had called the sanctuary home for a long time before deciding to mate.

Arrow receives some of the water for traveling through the waste, and is soon on her way to finding that dragon she is starting to hate.

In the Scarred Wasteland, the flora and fauna were sick and pestilent like Arrow herself. Here she spent a short time at rest with a clan residing at the edge of the Wyrmwound crater. Other than food, and a temporary place to rest, these dragons offered little other use to her. Time was a wasting, and that dragon she was hunting was still out there -- one step ahead of her, still. Always.

— ShepherdOfFire

Time has a way of escaping us all. For Arrow, time spent in the Wandering Contagion had blended down and melted to eternity. Stopping to rest, she was taken in by a group of dragons that seemed inured to her vendetta. She was given a place to tend her wounds and rest her bones. And time got away from her. She became enamored of a strange young dragon with odd eyes. She’d all but forgotten her vendetta and was on the cusp of settling down in the territory, but her dreams chased her back into the flow of time.

Before the first of her eggs began to crack, Arrow gathered herself and disappeared into the night, once more in search of a quarry she might never close her talons upon.

How long has she been hunting? How far has her search taken her?
Arrow found herself once more within another clan of the Ashfall Wastes. Barred at the entrance of the cave by a furious female Imperial, who sensed the parasite on her and refused to allow her near any of the clan. Not that she minded. She needed to keep moving, as long as her wings still beat and she still carried the strength to keep hunting that damnable dragon...

But what will become of her, once she finds out her quarry has long been Exalted?

The days blended together. The path before her was indistinguishable and unremarkable. She could barely remember the Spiral she had desperately been chasing, let alone why. Arrow continued onward, a fervent, gnawing sensation in the pit of her stomach carrying her from one day to the next. Throughout her journey she had been fortunate enough to encounter many charitable clans. Though she had planned to take advantage of them countless times, her hatred for the creatures who casted her and her kind aside softened ever so slightly over the years. Unfortunately, her luck had run out. No one would take in a parasite, and her provisions and coin were long spent. After barely escaping death's door, she collapsed. Her heavy, tired eyelids slowly descended.

"Well, aren't you a rough sight?" She heard a voice sneer, the words dripping with venom.

Arrow scoffed, a rueful smile forming across her face as everything began to fade away. 'So this is how it ends...?' She thought to herself. Ah, but it was too late for regrets. Arrow had no more strength left to fight. She drifted off into darkness, resigning to her fate.

...

For the first time in ages, Arrow dreamed. She dreamed of her hatchling days, of that stupid Spiral and that silly look on his face, the beginning of all of this. Of Rasher, the dragon she knew she couldn't spend forever with. How was he doing now? Did her hatchlings survive? Questions she shoved to the far corners of her mind floated up like bubbles.

Arrow opened her eyes. Light poured in through a large window, dancing across the walls. The smell of stew wafted in the air. An obsidian Pearlcatcher stood in front of a small stove, humming a tune. It was a familiar song, but she couldn't quite place where she heard it. Arrow tried to sit up, but her arms quickly gave out. The Pearlcatcher turned.

"Awake, are you?" Smiling gently back at her were a pair of mismatched eyes. The Pearlcatcher began preparing a bowl of stew and took it over to the table next to Arrow's bed. "You were nearly dead by the time Xenon found you." The Pearlcatcher nodded to a Wildclaw leaning against the wall, his arms crossed as he glared intensely at Arrow. The two stared daggers into each other before the Pearlcatcher started to speak once again, this time hesitantly.

"I'm very sorry, but... the one you're looking for... he's gone." Arrow's eyes snapped back from Xenon to the Pearlcatcher.

'How did she know about him?'

Yet somehow Arrow knew that, reflected back at her in those mismatched eyes, was the truth. The end that she had been both chasing and running away from, the reality of her prey's demise and her purpose lost all came crashing down at once. Arrow burst out laughing, surprising both of them and causing the Wildclaw to leap to the Pearlcatcher's side. Tears streamed down Arrow's face as she collapsed back into the soft pillows with a thud.

"Ah!" she exclaimed. "So that's how it ends?"

...

It took a long time for Arrow's body, and mind, to heal. The Pearlcatcher, known as Fate, was able to see a dragon's future with just one touch. The truth was both freeing and shackling. There was no Dusk in Arrow's future, it turned out, and if Arrow continued on her search, she would have no future at all. Fate tended to her while the Wildclaw, Xenon, kept a watchful eye. Hatchlings and curious villagers visited often, the door always opening and closing. It seemed she wasn't so far from home, her journey having taken her to the dense thicket of the Shrieking Wilds. Where was she to go now? What was she to do? Perhaps it was time to go to the one place she knew.

After all, Fate said it best: what is an end, but the start of a new beginning?

Dusk and Dawn are gone. Her first mate, Rasher, is gone. Even her brother is gone -- Harpoon, too, was successful in continuing the parasites' lineage. But unlike Arrow herself, he lacked the willpower to fuse to his vessel after the fact... and he perished just like their mother before them. With all of her connections severed, everyone that has ever mattered to her unreachable, what is left for the Skydancer now?

The Sunbeam Ruins are too sunny, too hot, as always. How Arrow loathes the Lightweaver's domain, she always has. But it is her birthplace after all, the one place she still knew after all this time. It seemed... fitting, to come back here. Maybe she would find something else worth her time, her continued existence, in this land.

Arrow finds her birth clan abandoned upon her return -- what was once an extravagant underground burrow in the Mirrorlight Promenade is dusty and hollow, caved in on itself in places from so many years of neglect. The Skydancer does some digging with the local dragons, and finds out that Myura's clan relocated from the Mirrorlight Promenade to a temple in the Hewn City some many years ago. Despite herself, Arrow feels... inexplicably spurred to pay them a visit. Maybe she won't be recognized?

Having fused into her mortal vessel so long ago, the identifiable stench and lingering black magic of the parasites is finally beginning to ebb away from Arrow's body. It's a miracle that neither her birth clan's neurotic plague doctor, nor their ever-watchful temple guard, recognize the Skydancer for what she is. Treated with the kindness that The Purified Temple extends to all travellers that come through their home, Arrow is ushered inside and offered her own sleeping quarters. She eagerly takes the opportunity to collapse into rest.

YOU HAVE OBTAINED THE PARASITE
CuRV85J.png
Something is... off... about the hatchling you've just obtained. It smells wrong, and something about the way it looks is setting off warning bells in your mind.... YOU HAVE OBTAINED THE PARASITE.
Welcome to the Parasite Introduction! This is a game to see how far the bloodlines of these dragons spread through breeding a single nest and then being exalted.
This dragon may look like a perfectly normal dragon of its kind, but it is, in fact, not a dragon at all. It is a parasitic creature that enters dragon eggs and replaces the dragon within. The parasite takes the form of the dragon and hatches in its place. It will then flee the nest (via being sold) and find a new nest where it will attempt to breed with a dragon in this new nest. After this it dies (through exalting it) and the hatchlings of its first nest will automatically become parasites themselves.

631_gray.pngThis dragon is from the Virus One lineage.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PARTICIPATE
If you would like to play, the rules are below! If you do not wish to participate in this game / exalt this dragon, please message @Mediscoot and let us know! Your dragon will be listed as unsuccessful (unable to spread the parasite), and will be no longer tied to the game. Please be warned, participating in this challenge does require the parasite dragon being exalted (With an exception of it being used for a breeding project, or if you really like the dragon, it will be considered exalted after the first nest.)

HOW TO PLAY THE GAME
Once you have this dragon, you must breed it with another dragon in your lair. After its offspring are hatched, you'll copy all of the text in the parent parasite's description into each of the hatchlings' bios/descriptions. Then you'll exalt the parent parasite (this doesn't include the other dragon you bred it with as they are not part of the game). All offspring must then be sold or given away so the cycle can continue. Once you have hatched the nest, or sold the parasite, please post here so we can keep track of where the parasite is spreading. It is also a way for other players to obtain more parasites.
910_gray.png

16481_gray.png
RULES
- Parasites must be bred immediately and then must be exalted once their nest has hatched. The hatched parasites must be spread to others through trades or the AH as soon as possible. The only way out of this is if the dragon is being used in a breeding project. After the desired hatchling is hatched, you must exalt the parent and the rest of the hatchlings.
- The parasite must have the parasite information found in their bio/description.
- Please do not breed parasites with other parasites.
- Any parasite that is not exalted after breeding is considered exalted. Any offspring after the first nest are to be ignored by the game. No ifs, ands, or buts.
- For breeding projects, the parasite can be bred as many times as needed to reach a chosen hatchling. After the desired hatchling is born, the parent then should be exalted as if the game was being played normally. Only the FIRST NEST counts as new parasites, so the description should only be added onto those hatchlings.
