When Sandy was a little hatchling, born in the shadow region, he got very ill. When he passed, his parents didn't have time to arrange a funeral for him, but still wished for him to get the burial he deserved. They placed him in a jar with some sprit guardians, including a Lux Spectre and a Aer Phantom. As they bobbed down the river, Sandy's soul wasn't freed. Frustrated, his soul never left. When Tercatto picked him up, and opened the jar, Sandy just flew out, unaware of his new form as a ghost. Speaking became a challenge, as he was just learning dragon, he ended only speaking ghost. In order to help him out, the Lux Spectre, Nara, learned Dragon. Tercatto decided to learn ghost, specifically to help him communicate. Sandy is able to speak a few words of Dragon, such as calling Tercatto, Fern, and well, everyone else on that side Uncle or Aunt, with the exception of Coral and Rust, whom he calls Grampee and Grammy (Rust isn't a big fan of that one). All in all, he was pretty much adopted by Tercatto, and they're almost inseparable.
