Personnality

Shiai embodies quite well the stereotype of the Pearlcatcher. Extremely proud, she puts herself in great esteem and thinks the others should think the same. She doesn’t confide herself to anybody and it is hard to tell if she is playing the role of the cold, distant and unpleasant scornful lady – but so brilliant and beautiful that she can afford it – as a mask to protect herself or if it is her real personality. Probably a bit of both. Apart of that, she is very self-demanding, hates losing and making mistakes and currently disgusts herself because she thinks she made an enormous mistake by becoming a priestess, and then by fleeing. If she is so scornful to others, especially those who have a defined role they fit perfectly, it’s because she could have been at their place and is no more. She is also afraid of changes and always complains when something that was planned changes, even if she is very happy with it after.
Shiai hates the lack of comfort and if she likes to travel, she prefers to be assured that she would have a personal room and a bunch of little attentions where she would stay to rest. Knowing that, her long journey along with Catheire could even be seen as a kind of self-punishment. She likes beautiful and delicate crafted things and flowers, such like ornaments. She highly values the efforts someone makes by himself : for example, according to her, a handmade cotton handkerchief that a suitor would give her as a gift would be worth more than a bought silk and gold-ornate handkerchief (unless the suitor that bought the handkerchief would have travel miles and miles and went through a lots of trials to get it – it’s all relative).
Mostly unconsciously, Shiai is afraid of losing someone else she cherishes and that’s why she doesn’t want to begin a relationship with a potential mate. She says she is looking for someone who would be worth her, but it’s more of an excuse to refuse. But regarding to her tastes, the dragon who could match her would someone shiny and ambitious, bright as the sunshine (and we all know a certain Skydancer that matches that description but, he, we’re not going to interfere) – but she is likely to prefer a Pearlcatcher (oh, this is going to be difficult… have courage, suitor !).
Shiai’s peal used to be of a beautiful shiny pearly white with lightning blue reflects, but now, considering the fact that she is not happy since a few years, her pearl is dull. But if we could look right into it until its very core, we would find a glowing and strongly bright core of a thundering lightening blue. She would like to renew with the spirits and the gods she used to pray but has no more the faith to do it correctly.

Childhood

Shiai’s childhood has been cheerful and she was happy. Her family lived in a Lightning clan and there, a traveling priest who was staying here for a while taught her some of his religious rituals and ceremonies, and explained her the history of the world and the dragon Gods. This was the beginning of her priestess life for she was truly passionate about it and totally fit the role. Plus, she discovered her gift for establishing contact with the minor elemental spirits : she prayed them to maintain them in a good mood, so the gatherings were abundant and they were relatively protected from big damages from the natural disasters.


Teenage age

When she was a teenager, an accident happened and completely changed her life. Lightning during a storm stroke an isolated structure where some members of her family were, her brothers Alastair and Brunelle, and her sister Sydonia, and set fire to the building. They were unable to escape because they were surprised in their sleep by the fall of fragments. They died and since then, Shiai lost all faith in the dragon Gods, especially the Stormcatcher. Until then, she had been a very promising priestess but then, she refused to go on with it and decided to accompany Catheire in the journey she was just going to begin.

Adulthood

A few years ago, she left her clan and the Lightning land with her childhood friend Catheire, who was setting a journey in order to encounter a lot of dragons. She wanted to learn as much things about the world, the history, the communities, the other Flights and clan and the society in general, and to come back way more experienced than she was. She was formed to be a teacher and wanted to teach to hatchlings, but her clan and her neighbours didn’t need a teacher for now and she felt to unexperienced. So, she prepared herself to go on this journey – a formation quest. Shiai’s presence was not expected at all, as they were friends but not that close. The death of the members of Shiai’s family had been a big change in her life and mind, though, and when she asked Catheire to come with her, she accepted because she felt like Shiai needed to be away from her clan for a while, and besides, Catheire wouldn’t mind some company.
Their trip across Sornieth had last for two years and four months the day they arrived at our clan. Catheire and Shiai, despite their differences, got along very well and were much more close to each other than they were in their childhood. We offered them a friendly shelter to rest, and when we knew that Catheire was a teacher, as we already thought we were lacking some dragon whose job is teaching to hatchlings (and none of us was really qualified for that), we asked her if she would mind to stay with us instead of keep on with her travel. Catheire gladly accepted and Shiai, with a lot of complaining stayed too.
She is happy to stay with us, but will not say so. However, she deplores the fact that we are a little clan with not a lot of facilities and place, and without a great implication our Flight activities – but inside, maybe that kind of nice and simple family place what was she was looking for to renew with her former self.

As a year-long resident now, she took some habits here, like going everyday into the gentle woods nearby – it’s more like a bunch of a few trees and a lot of bamboo than woods, but it still is nature. Here, she meditates and tries to enter in contact with the nature spirits residing here. For now, her success is not obvious, as it’s a long time since her last real practice, and also maybe because she is not used to behaviour of the spirits of the place, imbued with the magic of the Windsinger, that are more timid and wild. Despite everything, she attracted an Autumn dryad living here alone. Apparently, she wanted some company and was glad to meet a dragon that could understand her like Shiai. She became her familiar as Shiai is able to magically bond a familiar and a dragon with a ritual, and was named Aurora. After that, Shiai also performed her familiar bonding ritual with the three other familiars in the clan (if it hasn’t been Shiai, Emberyl would certainly have refuse to do so). Seeing that, Sedewus and I understood she had a religious formation and began to ask her if she could do other rituals or ceremonies. We saw it made her uncomfortable and didn’t insist, but told her that if she wanted to offer her services to perform priers and praises to the Windsinger’s and other dragon Gods’ altars of our clan, she would be welcomed.


The story of a very motivated suitor

When they arrived and settled down, Catheire was immediately in contact with Emberyl as he was the dedicated hatchling nurse, and they immediately get along well. By knowing Catheire, Emberyl met Shiai. And since the moment he saw her, he began to court her with assiduity. She is repelling him since the first time he insinuated his feelings, but he is going on with a kind of obstinacy. He had never clearly declared himself to her, and she is expecting that he is preparing a big occasion to announce it – she imagines he is the kind of dragon to propose marriage kneeled with a paw down earth and a ring.
She is currently testing his will. She would never have accepted to even let him try, but he didn’t ask the permission and such stubbornness finally attired her attention.

Emberyl, nervous : I want to know want you do want. Are you planning to stay here with us, in our clan, if Catheire accepts to become our designated teacher ?
Shiai : I do not think I have to tell you what I am planning to do. This is my own mind and it is rude of you to ask for it.
Emberyl : Excuse-me, Shiai… I didn’t mean to be rude, I just wanted to know… if you’re going to leave us.
Shiai : Why are you so interested in where I am going to ? This has nothing to do with you.
Emberyl : Well, you see… Yes, in fact, this has something to do with me.
Shiai : I stop you right there. Shut up, Emberyl, and do not say another word, or you would likely be humiliated.
Emberyl, smiling : So, you care a little bit for me – at least for my feelings ?
Shiai, sighing : It always disturbs me when I know people put themselves in embarrassment because they want something from me that I can not afford to give them.
Emberyl, softly : It’s all about you, right ?
Shiai, with a cold voice and something undefinable in the eyes : Exactly. You don’t have anything to offer me that I would ever want. And if I am not clear enough, let’s put it in other words : we will never speak about it again. Do you understand me, Emberyl ?
Emberyl, calmly : Wow… It’s pretty hard to hear. You’re not being very preventive, eh.
Shiai : It would have been cruel of me to let you even an ounce of hope. Some can call me with a lot of names, and not the most pleasant, but cruel, certainly not.
Emberyl, smiling again : You’re not easy to convince, are you ? You didn’t even look seriously at me. Well, at least, let me try.
Shiai, firmly : No. I will not accept anything coming from you. You would lose both your time and your treasures, in a useless battle you can not win. Plus, I assure you this would make me feel most uncomfortable. That means the answer is no, Emberyl.
