Corsair
Pandora's Fears Captain
(Plans attacks, leads the charge) "Four: that's how many years It took me to get through the lesson That I had to do it all on my own! Three: that's how many Hail Marys They would pray for me Thinking I was gonna end up all alone! Two: for second chances that you've given me Can it be, lucky me, lucky me, now let's go! One: it's what we are, it's what we are Are we all we are, are we all we are!" -"Are We All We Are", by Pink ______Corsair comes from a humble beginning - her egg stolen from the nest, chosen instead to bolster the ranks of another family. She was content enough with them (though never very close), taking to their aggressive nature with ease; Corsair learned to steal, to posture, to stand her ground. However, in her mind, a rift began to form - with each feigned swipe, each hollow growl, and each performative fight, her teeth started to itch for more. As the gestures became more and more real - even going so far to intentionally wait to be caught stealing, as to justify a fight - Corsair’s family grew wary of her, always glancing from the corners of their eyes and finding excuses to not join her on any missions. ______Seeing the way things were going (prolific thief or not, the others were clearly losing trust in her), the wildclaw elected to say her goodbyes and set out on her own. Her family failed to hide their relief behind the well-wishes and small parting gifts, but Corsair didn’t care - the empty words wouldn’t soil the coins and food they offered. She set off without a goal in mind, but in her travels she’d toy with the concept of piracy, finding the thought more and more appealing as time passed; she was never fond of loneliness, and acquiring a crew could assuage the feeling. ______Eventually, she ended up at a run-down market. Her eyes flitted over the sellers’ stalls, idly contemplating whether anything there was worth stealing… or if any of the market’s denizens look like they’d be a fun fight. Drifting through the uninspiring set up, Corsair’s ears catch the sounds of a struggle; finding the prospect of combat much more enticing than any dusty carvings, she took off in the direction of the noises. In the far end of the market, she found it: dirt and grass kicked up, out-of-place frost in the pattern of a magic blast, and in the center, one collapsed figure, and one standing tall. ______The apparent victor was a wildclaw with scales and feathers the color of blood (splatters of real blood notwithstanding), now returning an ornate sword to its scabbard. On the ground lay an ice-aligned guardian, their blue-silver scales sporting numerous gashes, scratches, and cracks. Breathing heavily, they glare up at their better as he continues to loom over them; his eyes flick to the gathering crowd (Corsair among them) with something like irritation before swiping a sack of treasure from the guardian’s discarded bag and beginning to stalk away from the scene. ______Impressed by the feat, Corsair grins sharply and peels away from the crowd to follow the red-colored dragon. He seems to sense her presence, glaring back as she approaches and growling low when Corsair matches pace with him. Seeing his aggression, she’s quick to state the purpose of her approach: perhaps this stranger would enjoy a violent profession, and the company of like-minded companions? ______The proposition seemed to spark his interest, his pace slowing and head tilting to prompt more information from the other dragon. She complies, elaborating on her plan - a pirate crew, attacking and pillaging as they please; there’s strength in numbers, he’d never have to back down from a kill again. Corsair notes that he’d be the first dragon she recruited, meaning the position of first mate is open, if he wanted it. She throws in some compliments on his fighting prowess, detailing how impressed she was that he’d taken down a guardian alone - meant to flatter, sure, but also completely true. ______His crest puffs up in pride, a slight smile gracing his muzzle as he preens from the compliments; Corsair stifles her own widening smile - she knows she’s caught him, hook, line, and sinker. The red dragon agrees to a trial period - he’d help her recruit others, and work with them for a few raids before making a decision. The flaky response doesn’t deter the other, as she’s confident he’s already made his choice (whether he’d admit it or not). ______Her confidence is proven valid when he agrees to formally join in the tail end of their first raid; Red Sky (as Corsair now knew him) had grinned wildly at her, pupils blown in excitement, and hands dripping crimson when he declared he’d be joining the crew permanently. As the years went on, they grew to be inseparable, sharing their resources and stolen goods without any hesitation. |
