Vixen
Hunter / Volunteer Guard
(Acquires meat-based food items for the clan)

"Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God blessed the broken road
That led me straight to you."
-"Bless The Broken Road", by Rascal Flatts

_____Vixen is a dragon that’s keenly aware of her place in the ecosystem - up near the top, as such a large animal, but certainly not unthreatened; just as her shadow looms over the smaller denizens of the Viridian Labyrinth, other creatures' loom over her. Though skydancers consume only bugs and plants, Vixen has chosen to be a hunter for her clan; she targets her prey in accordance with Chickadee’s parameters, and oftentimes reports back to the imperial with any potentially helpful information on the animals’ behaviors and numbers.

_____On what she thought to be a normal day, looking to bring back some novel food for a celebration, Vixen made the journey to the Windswept Plateau’s Reedcliff Ascent. The trip would be too far, normally, but one of her clanmates had agreed to cover her usual hunting duties while she was gone, and would be aided by her familiar (the pronghorn stomper was disinclined to flight-based travel). Due to the lack of cover, Vixen forewent her usual ambush-based hunting techniques and instead focused on aerial attacks; this effort earned her a bountiful haul and tired flight muscles.
_____She settled in to rest on one of the lower stairs, lulled into a sense of security by the uninterrupted lines of sight around her. A mistake, she would soon realize - there were cave entrances dug into the side of the next stair up, hidden behind the lower platform’s bamboo. Peering from the darkness were several sets of feline eyes - scalebacks considering their target.
_____Moments before she would have closed her eyes to sleep, Vixen caught sight of gleaming scales, headed right toward her flank - as she launched to her feet, a second scaleback tackled her from the other side, its claws ripping into her fur. She shrieks and lashes out at the offending creatures, managing to force them back a few meters. The skydancer scans the area frantically, counting four scalebacks in total - the two that had already attacked her, and another pair prowling behind them. Shaking with adrenaline, Vixen roars at her attackers, flaring her wings and blowing dirt at them as she does; this buys her an opportunity to strike, as fleeing isn’t an option - she couldn’t take off or run fast enough in this state.
_____Her efforts are focused on the scalebacks’ faces - if she can shred their whiskers or damage their eyes, the pride should give up and find an easier target. Unfortunately for Vixen, this requires getting quite close to them. As she snaps her teeth just a few hairs shy of one of the beasts’ whiskers, it takes a swipe at her face - the dragon jerks her head away as quickly as possible, but not fast enough to avoid contact fully. A single claw tears across the right side of her face, directly through her eye. Vixen screams and twists to shove the scaleback away with her right wing. She hears a few grunts and growls as it’s thrown away from her and into its companions.
_____Having heard the commotion, a blue and black imperial dives down into the fray; the downdraft from his landing maneuver buffets both Vixen and the scalebacks - the former flattens herself to the ground and tries to shield her new eye wound from the kicked-up dust while the felines scramble to their feet, hissing at the newcomer. They begin to panic - one skydancer is a valid target for the four of them, but a skydancer and a much larger dragon? Not worth the risk; exchanging glances, the quartet bolts as one, each weaving through the bamboo and leaping back into their den.
_____The imperial glares after them, holding his wings out and baring his teeth in an intimidation display; once he can no longer hear their scales knocking against the plantlife, he quickly folds his wings and drops the threatening expression, turning to the other dragon. Tilting his head and leaning down to get a better look at the panting skydancer, he asks, “That sounded like a nasty fight, are you--” The imperial quickly cuts himself off, spring green eyes widening in worry as he saw the state of her eye, “Oh, that’s-- yeah, you’re not okay. Can you fly?”
_____Taking a shaking breath and rising to her feet, Vixen flinches as pain lances across her right wing. With a quick glance, it’s evident that her second and third wing fingers are broken - she hadn’t noticed through the pain in her eye, but one of the scalebacks must have lashed out when she pushed them away. “Not without injuring myself further,” came her strained reply, “and I’m not sure if I could stay conscious, anyway.”
_____Eyeing the blood streaming down her face and the limp bones of Vixen’s wing, the other amends his question, “Right. Of course not-- we’ll have to walk, then, I’ll take you to the nearest healer… You can lean on me if you need to.”
_____With that, the two set out at an incredibly slow pace - they make it to the healer’s clan just before nightfall, by which time the skydancer is barely standing. She’s rushed to the appropriate area, and her wounds are treated - the wing bones are set and the gashes are cleaned and bandaged. The medic informs her that she’ll make a full recovery - aside from her damaged eye, which will never regain vision. Though devastated by the loss, Vixen expresses her gratitude to the healer, and offers to give the clan part of her hunting haul (which the imperial had kindly shouldered for their trek).
_____Once she’d been released from their care, she asked around about the imperial who’d rescued her - only to find out that he’d stayed with the clan, waiting for Vixen to recover. She thanks the other dragons and starts looking for him, eventually finding the other looking over a stream. He startles when he sees her approach, immediately standing and peppering her with questions - how’s she feeling? Will she be able to fly again? How’s the eye–
_____The skydancer huffs in amusement and assures him she’s fine… Minus the eye. When he breathes a sigh of relief, Vixen quietly asks his name, and why he’d bothered waiting for her. The imperial turns bashful, replying that he’s called Aparal, and that he was worried. Vixen makes an incredulous noise at his response, “Mm-hm. Right. You do realize most dragons would have just gone home?”
_____Avoiding her eyes, Aparal murmurs, “Well-- I mean– You just,” he pauses and sighs, apparently collecting his thoughts, “Sorry. Maybe that was a weird thing to do, but… I was really impressed by how well you kept your head. I would have been panicking, but you-- you just got back up and did what you needed to do… I guess I wanted to get to know such a cool dragon,” he concludes with a nervous smile in her direction.
_____Vixen, charmed by his awkward explanation and still quite grateful for his help (and perhaps more than a little endeared by the fact that he’d bothered to carry her supplies here), met his eyes and smiled back, “I could say the same. How would you feel about visiting the Shrieking Wilds,” the skydancer pauses for a moment, smile dropping a bit, “unless you have to get home, of course--”
_____Without hesitating for a second, Aparal grins, “I’d love to!
And, I mean, I don’t really have anywhere to get back to – my clan sort of… Dissolved a while back.”
_____Sensing an opportunity, Vixen furthers the offer, “Ah. Perhaps you could stick around for a while, then? Our leader would welcome a new member?”
_____Stars in his eyes, the imperial replies with a single word: “Absolutely.”

_____The pair made it to Vixen’s clan without issue, and Aparal was indeed welcomed with open arms. As time went on, the two grew closer and closer, both still feeling the spark from that first conversation; eventually they became mates, swearing to stay together for the rest of their lives.
