Biography

No one was expecting such a creature to be born in the Southern Icefield. Despite the ice in his eyes, Maelwas's hide was crackled and hard as if it was the deserts of the Dragonhome. He didn't feel at home in his birthclan, and left to wander through Sornieth, seeking for a place he could call home. His leathery wings, though shimmery at first, seemed to dry and their surface became crackled, just like his hide - not that he minded it. He preferred walking, anyway.

His paws felt the hot ground of the Ashfall Waste, he avoided the deepest waters of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, briefly visited the Zephyr Steppes but quickly saw he didn't fit in where no one kept their feet on the ground. On his way through the Scarred Wasteland, he got drawn in by the twinkling and alluring Starwood Strand, where he one day was discovered, sitting still like stone. He blinked his eyes when a small fae sat on his snout, and scared the little creature, making it flutter away. Being still a curious youngling, he followed the fae, and was led to a region so wild, ever changing and beautiful he couldn't have imagined it in his wildest dreams.

The Starfall Isles were a place where oddity was normal, and therefore no one questioned why an ice dragon such as him would look like an earth dragon. For the first time, he felt like he didn't stand out. He still didn't have a place to stay in, but didn't really mind. Soon he learned the welcomeness of the Arcanites - he'd be well welcomed in many clans, as long as he humored them with witty answers to their riddles and questions. While he wasn't the most clever at it, it was quite fun, and his efforts were appreciated. He was still a nomad, but here, every place felt homely.

One day, he was still venturing through the Isles, when he came face to face with a mirror dragon who, after making sure he wasn't a threat, led him to a clan guarded by curving crystal mountains. Here, too, he was welcomed as a guest, and riddled till the late hours of the night. He stayed for a day, two, for a week, and found the clan quickly accepted him in their midst, and when he expressed the desire to stay, the biggest hassle was finding him a comfortable place for him to sleep in.

Maelwas seeked for a role in the clan - he didn't want to burden them, he wanted a purpose. His size, strength, and hardy skin were the qualities of a fighter, but one thing stood on his way - his fear. Despite his long journey, he had mostly avoided conflict, and would falter when faced with enemies bigger than himself. Ashamed of this, he hid into his cave to think. In the dark comfort of his cave. He sat still in the dark, like a forgotten stone statue, and he found that despite the darkness, he didn't feel blind - he could feel footsteps of an approaching clanmate, hear more than he had thought possible, and smell even the creatures who were quiet enough not to be heard and small enough not to be felt. And then, a solution dawned to him. He waited till he could smell the nightdew in the air, and stepped out - even the starlight felt bright to his eyes now.

The clan leader, Cheya, didn't hesitate when she heard Maelwas's suggestion. Together with the tailor Vivana she created the daredevil cover Maelwas had only heard of in legends and tales he had heard when he was a little hatchling - with those, the wearer gave up their vision in the hopes of reaching something more. Maelwas sought courage. He gave a smile to Cheya and Vivana before covering his eyes.

The darkness felt even darker than that of his cave. He stood up, stretched, and was happy to find out he wasn't hesitant with his steps, and while it did take him a while to learn to navigate without eyes, his newfound courage helped him forward. He wasn't the most efficient fighter, still, since staying after a constantly moving opponent proved to be difficult, but a solution was found. He became a guard. His rocky hide was an unexpected aid in this - when he sat still by the road, it was easy to mistake him for a statue, and travelers wouldn't watch their step when they didn't see the guard hidden in plain sight. Maelwas was content. He finally had a place in the world.

For quite a while.

Years went by, and he stayed while many in the clan came and went. Maelwas learned their names, stories, and befriended them, happy to be in their midst. When Vivada passed, he mourned deeply, remembering the friend who had given him his role in the clan. He loved Unilucida, how the crystal mountains sometimes appeared to hum, a strange droning note filling the silence and resonating deep in his core, and all of the residents, whether they stayed for a long time or were just passerbys.

But slowly, a feeling rose in his heart. He felt he'd fulfilled his purpose in Unilucida. New guards had arrived and found their homes, and he felt a desire to wander somewhere else. First he told about it to Cheya, then her guardian Ennakaire, then slowly the news spread through the clan. He was sad to leave his friends, some of which he'd been with most of his life, but it was time to move on. After several days of reminiscing on old memories and sharing tearful goodbyes, he took his first steps outside of the clan's bounds in ages. It was scary, and oh, so exciting. He had no idea where life would take him this time, but he hoped it was going to be good.
