Focal Point is a dangerous place to grow up, even if you were born quick and clever like Nephthyi. His home clan balances like mountain goats on the side of the mountains, digging out a handful of ever-changing lairs in the Chalcedony Spines, but more often grasping and clutching on small ridges like so many lichens and grasses. This clan, the Bahmier, had much the same intelligence of their fellows in the Arcane Flight, but there was a savage experimentation about them, a cruel--no, merely cold--willingness to dispose of what they did not see as useful or successful. Certainly, Nephthyi was not abnormal then, perhaps a little softer than the rest of his clan, but he was the youngest, after all. He would test and change, in time, shift and re-form.

But eventually, even those lichens and grasses must face their own droughts. A strange new star-being began to take hold in the territories of Focal Point, digging in with ever-growing tendrils to digest all unlucky enough to fall within its grasp. It was just intelligent enough, however, to be useful to the Arcanist, as it was easily cowed by a small torf and could communicate over long distances without the need of a messenger or the worry of confusing a message. Nevertheless, the amount of food it needed began to drive out smaller clans, who could not gather as widely or as well as larger.

It was then that a faction of the clan began to hypothesize that it would buy the clan some time if a few dragons were sacrificed to feed the star-being, or the Arcanist. Nephthyi was seventh of the twenty-three planned "trials" as they were now titled. He was pressed to the beautiful table, black resin set with chalcedony and edged in stainless steel. Just an experiment, Nephthyi reminded himself. We must know, that's why we have trials. Trials like meeee...

Much of his ruff had been shaved prior to this, as well as his chin and muzzle, and remembering his family chants for star systems soothed the Tundra even as the thin, sharp knife came down, and a pink-purple burst of light and energy surrounded them, blasting Nephthyi off the table and leaving a deep score along his chin. After that, Nephthyi fled the Arcane Flight, travelling across the Sea of A Thousand Currents before washing up in the Hewn City.

From its perpetual darkness, Nephthyi learned better and better the ways of the dark and of monsters, rebuilding a family in Bogart's clan. It was Singer, however, who encouraged him most, teaching him to become a mage so to help his fighting brothers--a closeness he'd never had before. In the ruins he found a small kitten, raising and caring for it to be something not unlike a familiar.

Now, in the world of Earth, Nephthyi feels less damp and frightened, and the sky is clear for the best of star-gazing. He is home, at last.
