H A T C H L I N G H O O D
Her hatchling years went exactly how her secondary eyes predicted that first day. Her family had a knack for being weirdly bright and having liquid slosh in their bellies and having startlingly white eyes and acted nothing like any other Pearlcatchers she had seen, and yet despite fitting the family criteria perfectly and with an extra quirk, the level of fear they showed was strange and off-putting. She became colder and more distant. If they were going to ignore her, she would do the same. Their feelings radiated through her, and she willed her secondary eyes to shut. It was something she hadn't yet learned, and she was miserable. The day of exile came, and one other female, her only sister Ruru, was chosen to leave. Her parents were stone-faced. She marched straight out of her den with her head held high and a smile on her face. Her sister stayed far behind, revealing to Oracle's secondary eyes terror, misery, and a deep, profound sadness and rage projected straight at her. Ruru realized the eyes were trained on her and gave them their best glare. Oracle's vision went completely red. Her body seized and she fell to the ground as a vision took her. She had to learn how to control it. This time, playing out around her, she saw a warm, high-ceilinged cave, run by a frantic spiral with her family's piercing cold white eyes, but affection shone in them and his soul was a soft warming pink. She saw multiple rooms, all packed with hatchlings, some adolescent dragons, and watched as respectable clan leaders and strange, brightly colored jokers alike ushered in to choose a new dragon to care for and raise. The spiral welcomed them with open arms and led them past plaques on the wall of the hatchlings that had found homes. She frantically ran her eyes over them, looking for any with her affiliation, and to her dismay but not surprise, there were little to none. She felt her secondary eyes glare and knew it was directed inwards, at herself. She was unique. There were other dragons in there that were also unique, were also shunned by their families because of it. Whoever chose her would get a bona fide original. Her muscles relaxed, and she slowly gained consciousness. Her sister was surprisingly still there, watching, an unidentifiable expression on her face. Unidentifiable... Oracle stared hard at her. Nothing. With a jolt she realized that her secondary eyes had clouded over, finally! She leaped to her feet and started walking. She began taking in details of just the landscape, feeling slightly strange but comfortably isolated, not caring whether or not her sister was following. She started to see the beauty of her world, started taking small leaves and flowers and berries on her way. It felt like a long, easy lifetime, following her instincts to the cave, learning what other dragons could experience. Finally, as twilight settled in, they saw an entrance in the side of the hill. The sign read "Forsaken Cave Nursery". She trooped in, tired from the long journey, but her senses immediately came alive as she relived her vision. It all brought back a strange relaxed comfort to her, and she stood patiently at attention for the spiral, revitalized with the feeling of warmth and familiarity. Her sister was wearily collapsed on the floor next to her. "Oh dear!" came a voice from another room. Did your parents leave you here?" He flitted out at the speed of light, exactly how she remembered him. She squinted jokingly. "We walked. We hoped you were expecting us." He stared at her with surprise, and she laughed from deep within her belly, eyes filled with glee. "You're certainly a special one!" He piped, shaking off his unease. "You're not wrong, I just expected-" he peered into the darkness- "your parents to bring you! So you didn't get eaten...or mauled..." A pause. "Anyway, right this way! Here are the hatchlings that we've rehomed, as you can see, there are a lot of them! We're number one for reliability and pretty hatchlings for clans to take in! Almost all of them are well loved and still around, but a few did go to serve their deity." He waited for them to take it in. Oracle took a second to pause, pretended to scan them over, and smiled. "I can't wait." The spiral grinned. "Let's go positive attitude!" He intoned. He led them past many of the other hatchling rooms, and then finally to their own. "This is where you'll stay! More hatchlings will have this room too, and you'll be assigned a caretaker, but for now, rest. We'll see you in the morning!" He turned, looked back at them one more time in the darkness and Oracle saw love flash across his face. He then closed the door, leaving them in dark silence, leading them to sleep. The next few days went quickly. She loved her caretaker, and none of the hatchlings she roomed with seemed offput by her. They even started asking her to read their future. She was absolutely thrilled, and had begun learning how to be in the shoes of other dragons, and tell what was to be. They also took an admiration to her small collectables, tokens of where she'd been and what she'd done. She hung a shelf of them above her nest, to remind her of the stunningly bright future. As the hatchlings were chosen, they'd leave her something of theirs for her to hang on her shelf and remember forever. This went on for a while, until a rather fearsome Guardian came to the nursery. Fire danced around her, and a living creature of lava followed at a safe distance. Her face looked lightly singed, and she talked in a deep growl. "The clan needs more dragons," she snarled. "We're puny." Of course, Oracle had already predicted this moment, and focused her full many-eyed gaze on the intimidating figure, unblinking. The Spiral, whose name she could never quite remember, picked up on this cue. "Right this way, Ma'am! I have just the dragon!" The door opened with a click. She instantly saw the rush of emotion coming off the guardian in waves: terror, intregue, curiosity, surprise, and glee. Perfect. "I want her," The dragon announced, "as soon as possible." The head caretaker piped up. "Well, you can have her now!" The guardian, Linntigg, smiled broadly. "Sold." |
