» Cathedral of Carrion «
Canyon below the Pillar of the World | Lawful Evil | Prime Hunter Temptation
In a secluded canyon near the Pillar of the World lays the Cathedral of Carrion, a natural series of stone caves, channels, and pit canyons where a great temptation of Prime Hunters reside. They keep to themselves for the most part but won't hesitate should you cross into their territory. They are very hungry and you look like the perfect guest of honor for their next meal.

» Origins «
When huge Dominance wars rage across Sorienth it throws off massive amounts of elemental energy and Essence. That elemental Essence returns back to the elemental region it originated from and collects in secret places near small fragments of the Pillar of the World. Usually when enough Essence has consolidated it will spontaneously burst into life in the form of a pair of Progenitors.
During the late early part of the Fourth Era Dominance wars were particularly ferocious and pairs of Progenitors would spring up in great swaths. As time has gone on and the Dominance wars became less serious, almost standardized in their execution, the amount of Essence released was reduced as well. There was always enough to form new Progenitors sometimes the Essence would be spread around, drawn out too thin. This was often because the Essence would either not make it back to the collection spot or would fall. This led Essence to gather in different places; cracks in the earth, holes in the ground, at the bottom of wells, or the lee of great boulders.
It was never enough to quite make a Progenitor. Instead great pressure would build up both around and within until the elemental Essence snapped like a twig and it too would do what it was supposed to do; spontaneously create new life. But the things it would create were shadows of shadows of what a Progenitor could be. Mostly formless, pitiful and weak upon meeting existence all the new thing knew was that they were missing something. That they lacked enough Essence to become a fully forged being.
Usually out of pity civilized dragons would take pity upon the wretch of a dragon shaped thing. It was usually the last mistake they ever made. Dragons are full of elemental Essence and Prime Hunters lack it. And so they would attack the dragon, drain their Essence and life force and become a dragon shaped like them.
But as they lived their Essence would go down and the gnawing, horrible, hunger, would claw at them again and again and so they would have to feed again. It was found that while Prime Hunters don’t need to eat exactly, as the Essence draining fully sustains them, that consuming the vessel of the Essence you consumed greatly increases the length of time before a next feeding is required.
Prime Hunters are what they call themselves. But as of late normal dragons have taken to calling them other things. Hunter Killers or Shade Touched.. Because of more recent Beastclan acknowledgement a creature from their folklore has been used to name Prime Hunters. While rather safe from Prime Hunters they remind Beastclans of one of their most terrifying folk tales: vampires.

Aiden’s Temptation, known as the Carrion Temptation, is a large Temptation* located at the base of the Pillar of the World in a deep canyon where underwater rivers flow and flora clings to life with its fingertips. It is a desolate place but is also a clear shot from the Tangled Wood where you don’t have the brave the Greatwyrm’s Breach which holds even less for you. Except for the fact that any Earth dragon guide would never take you through that canyon and only fools or those who don’t know the landscape of Dragonhome well would take the path. Which is what the Temptation anticipates.
The Carrion Temptation functions much like a normal clan. There are craftsmen, teachers, couriers, and even those who tend the land. But they only participate in buying of trade, not of selling it. They get all their gold and most of their items from wayward ground caravans headed for the richest and eldest clans in Dragonhome around the Pillar of the World by attacking them, killing them, and stealing everything. This isn’t every caravan. Just to make it known the canyon is dangerous but they only hunt when they are hungry.
The leader of the Carrion Temptation is a powerful Prime Hunter named Aiden. Amid the Prime Hunters is a hierarchy of power and smaller temptations living within the influence of larger temptations. Aiden is not unlike a powerful Baron and many temptation leaders swear allegiance to him. If they don’t… well he’s got nearly one of every dragonic breed within his temptation and he’s sure at least one of them is hungry. It wouldn’t be hard to make a point to not get on his bad side or make him angry. And if he doesn’t have a member who would gladly eat you you’ll just be reduced to the primal Essence they were made from and scattered into the wind.
* a group of Prime Hunters that is larger than a single family is known as a temptation. Not a coven, not an enclave; a temptation.

The Cathedral has very few, if any, allies beyond other temptations that are too afraid of Aiden and Eva to actually go against Aiden. Aiden rules over other temptation by pure power and threat of complete obliteration if they do not fall into line or submit to him. Most Beastclans are neutral towards them and are the primary sapient beings that trade with the Cathedral. As they lack the elemental Essence Prime Hunters need to survive they are thus uninteresting to Prime Hunters and are not hunted like dragons are. A large Longneck community near the Cathedral has brokered a deal with the Cathedral. Instead of executing their worst criminals they are handed over to the temptation to do with as they please. This includes forced servitude but usually ends up with them being hunted for sport by members of the temptation or as a way for young Prime Hunters to be taught how to hunt and stalk by the older members of the temptation. |
Conversely: dragons hate the temptation. But like smaller temptations they understand the power of the Cathedral too much to make a play to get rid of them. How do you fight something that sees you as food? Earth clans stay far away from the canyon which the temptation resides and warns everyone they can to also stay away. Every few years some group of fools thinking they can flush out the Prime Hunters and do away with them. Aiden prefers to send their heads home in boxes so the clan who allowed them to come are reminded that his power is not to be trifled with. As such they are mostly at peace with Earth clans surrounding Aiden’s territory. Aiden also has a very strict rule to not eat where they sleep and hunting in and around the Pillar is strictly forbidden. This means that his Prime Hunters must go out to hunt. Which is better for them. Clans who don’t live in such close proximity to a temptation do not have the fear to turn away a stranger who comes asking if they have any spare food. |
