Vesta
the Temple Attendant
tumblr_inline_o21bmybIsc1r3lvtf_400.png
Unlike many dragons, Vesta has never felt any urge to find a mate or produce hatchlings. For much of her life, she and the others around her attributed this to her trust issues; unlike other Shadow dragons, pranks and deception did not come naturally to her, and she was wary of those for whom they did.

Distancing herself from deceivers in the Tangled Wood meant leading a solitary lifestyle, which very nearly led to her death, when her disregard for warnings and penchant for traveling alone made her a fine target for bandits. It was only by the grace of the gods that a questing paladin of Light searching for his Charge happened by, and was able to intervene on her behalf.

He was new to her - stalwart and honest, and exactly what he appeared to be. He asked nothing for his intervention. No terms, no favors owed, no payment requested. And perhaps another dragon in her position would have been smitten with this knight in shining armor, but Vesta felt only gratitude. It was partly out of this gratitude, and partly out of fear that he would call in a favor at some point, that she provided him and the two Skydancer hatchlings riding on his back with provisions for their continuing journey.

As they rested at her home, the Guardian, Aurorus, told her about his adventures, about his quest, and about his home. And when he was ready, she bid him farewell and good luck.

wQJDmVr.png Much later, she heard word of the growing Order of Dawn's Talon in the Sunbeam Ruins. At first she thought nothing of it, until she heard a familiar name. Aurorus had indeed found his Charge, not long after he'd rescued her in fact, and they had together gone on to found their own clan within a ruined temple. Evidently, they welcomed all Flights in their halls, and Vesta wondered if she might somehow feel more at home among dragons like Aurorus than she did in the Tangled Woods.

So she set out for the temple of Clan Araven, and when she arrived, the Guardian was there to welcome her with open wings. It took some adjusting to - learning how to trust these dragons so very different from what she knew. But in time she did grow used to her new home, and it was a home. She found her place as a devoted acolyte to the Lightweaver, and happily saw to the day to day upkeep of the temple itself, sweeping its floors and dusting the statues and shelves.

Her new position as the temple's attendant brought with it an ironic secondary responsibility; though she remained uninterested in having hatchlings of her own despite having overcome her distrust of others, her constant presence within the temple walls made her the ideal dragon to keep watch over the clan's hatchlings, a role that has been surprisingly fulfilling to her.

She has since accepted that it is simply not her nature to desire a mate or clutch of her own - she has found her family elsewhere.
