Divider-_Vertical-1.png The name 'Faustina' means 'lucky,' and over the course of her life, the Guardian bearing it has found that luck treats her in odd ways, her fortune turning as quickly and frequently as the tides. Her early life was unremarkable, eking out a living in the Scarred Wastelands like so many others before her, until she came of age to seek her Charge.

She wandered the desolate and barren landscape she called home, driven onward by her innate need to find the place, creature, or thing she was to dedicate her life to protecting, until, at last, she saw a strange silhouette on the horizon. A chill ran through the Guardian's body, and she made her way to the small hill it stood upon and marveled; growing on the dusty outcropping was a solitary, leafy tree, green despite its surroundings. Recognizing her Charge, Faustina dug a new home for herself in the hill, among her tree's twisted roots.

But protecting a tree in the Plaguebringer's domain is difficult. One morning, the Guardian emerged from her den to find a Wildclaw pouring a noxious orange fluid onto the ground at the base of her tree. Faustina flew at the intruder in a fury - and he laughed as she chased him. In the end, he escaped, darting into a ravine too narrow for her to fit through, and as he went, she heard him comment on the "beauty" of her hatred and wrath. Over the next few days, the tree began to wither despite her best efforts to maintain its health - and the Wildclaw returned several times to taunt her, and his words boiled in her head when she tried to sleep at night. "It's dying, my sweet. Can't you hear it screaming?"

DCqtEhu.png Distraught, the Guardian sought the advice of a mystic from a nearby clan, who told her to retrieve one of the crystals of the Starwood Strand that kept the rampant viruses of the Scarred Wastelands from intruding on the Starfall Isles. Faustina left immediately, traveling as fast as her wings could carry her. She slept as little as possible on her journey, and returned with a crystal as soon as she could - but it was too late.

The tree was dead.

The Guardian's tormented wails carried well into the night. Hollow and alone, she lay at the base of her withered Charge, and would have given up and died there - had the Wildclaw not come back to revel in her grief. Faustina sprang to her feet and lunged at him in anguish-driven rage, and pursued as he ran. No matter where he went, she tracked him. Day in, day out, she lived for nothing but this single-minded hunt for vengeance. Her rage burned itself out, but she pressed on, bitter and nearly feral, until she collapsed in the Sunbeam Ruins.

Divider-_Vertical-1.png When she awoke in a temple, she tried to leave and continue her pursuit, but barely made it to the door. Her body was simply too weak to sustain her hunt. The Pearlcatcher who tended to her told her that she'd been found by the clan's resident treasure hunter and brought back to the temple to recover. But it was the clan's alchemist, Aquilius, who made himself a friend to Faustina. He recognized heartbreak, and though he didn't know what had caused it, he tried to ease her pain as best he could.

When at last she was strong enough to leave, she found that the Wildclaw's trail had gone cold. With a heavy heart, she returned to the temple, at first in the desperate hope that she might hear some news of him. Aquilius continued to support and comfort Faustina, and in time, convinced her to pick up the pieces of her life. She joined Clan Araven, and found some degree of solace in their servitude to the Lightweaver.

Eventually, a pair of mercenaries - a Skydancer and a Fae - stopped at the temple to rest. They were polite guests, charming in their own way. They seemed quite taken with Faustina, who was tasked with hosting them, which was just as well, because after a few nights spent thinking on it, she offered them a contract - to find and execute the Wildclaw who'd killed her Charge. Galerius, the smooth-talking Fae wizard, was quick to turn down her payment, and assured her the job would be done for free. Caius, the stoic warrior, glanced at his companion in surprise, but agreed without objection.

Grotesque-_L.png The relief when they returned with news of his death was overwhelming. That evening, Faustina set out on a journey back to the Scarred Wastelands. She placed a broken heartstone at the base of her dead tree, and stayed the night in a silent vigil. A weight lifted from her shoulders, and when she returned to the clan, her hide was covered in golden runes. Grotesque-_R.png
