Biography

Thornspell
Knowledge is only power when tempered by wisdom.

The firstborn of Lanuria and Rohan of the Clan of The Sacred Lotus, Thornspell came to the Clan of the Snowy Owl when it was first started, as an envoy for an alliance and to help the small clan get on its feet. She ended up enjoying her time there so much that she stayed.

Once upon a time she had an arrogant demeanour, due to coming from a distinguished line of scholars, writers and rulers from her home clan. However, time in this clan's welcoming, kind environment has relaxed her formerly undesirable qualities, making her one of the kindest dragons in the clan.

Thornspell is the clan's resident librarian, and can most often be found in the small, but brightly lit cave that houses their small stash of books. She, along with Ragnarok, is one of the clan's few mages. While rather introverted, she will always lend a helping hand to those in need.

She is inseparable from her familiar, Hedwig, and spends much of her free time writing or painting with her.

Down there is a mass of unsorted description and lore. Continue reading... at your own risk.

Thornspell is the clan scholar. She specialises in magic, runes and dusty old books. Hedwig is constantly telling her to go outside for once. It hardly ever works.

Thornspell is extremely mature for her age. She attempts to remain optimistic at all times, believing very much in the power of friendship. (And books, of course.) However, she sometimes goes into a depressed and cynical state. Most of her clan have no idea why. Explained in Thornspell and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. And now, time for some lore!

Painting

Hedwig gazed at her canvas. She was captivated by this new world that she had emerged in, this world her family and friends spoke of in hushed, fearful tones.

‘The Surface’.

Yet now she was living here, and it wasn’t scary at all. It wasn’t filled with terrifying beasts called dragons that would happily eat underground-dwellers in a flash of snapping jaws. Well, it was filled with dragons, but they were all very nice. Thornspell had quickly become her new best friend.

But her parents didn’t understand. When she’d come to tell them about this new, beautiful, amazing and shiny landscape... well, they were happy she was alive, sure, but not at all pleased with her. She’d been grounded (literally... because they’re underGROUND! heh, sorry). Word had got out to her friends, and now they were avoiding her.

Why?

Why didn’t they understand? Why weren’t they willing to take a chance? How could they be so... so... narrow-minded?

She sighed. She wasn’t at all sure that her idea would work. What could a mere painting do to change someone so set in their ways?

“A picture is worth a thousand words,” a kindly Charoite Burrower said to her young grandchild. “Remember that.”
“Sure thing, Grandmama!”

It was worth a shot. But was there anything that she could paint that symbolised the innocence, wonder and beauty of this world? Anything that could encompass the wonder and happiness she felt?

Something caught her eye.

It was just Thornspell, puttering around in the snow, wearing a ridiculous bright rainbow scarf. Inexplicably, it brought a smile to her face.

She remembered how she met Thornspell.

She must have taken a wrong turn somewhere. The earth was changing. It felt different around her. But she had no choice. She’d keep burrowing until she found a cavern, then she could navigate her way back home.

Suddenly, she felt vibrations above her. She realised that someone was digging down. “Help”’ she cried. “I’m lost!”

The earth broke through the top of her tunnel. As she squinted through the sudden bright light, she caught a glimpse of deep, purple eyes, a forked tongue, feathers, and…

She gasped. It was a dragon! The kind that ate creatures like her… She must have dug too close to the surface! ‘Oh god… this is it, isn’t it… Oh Arcanist, have mercy on my soul...’

She had thought herself dead. But instead, she had discovered a whole new world, and most importantly a new friend. They’d bonded over silly things like catching snowflakes and discussing how it was strange that their two societies shared the same deities.

Hedwig smiled, and put brush to canvas. With deft strokes, she captured a smiling dragon, with glowing runes, large, feathery wings, and a ridiculous rainbow scarf.

It was simple. It looked utterly ridiculous.

It was perfect.

More Lore— Thornspell and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

It chronicles Thornspell and Hedwig’s misadventures while visiting the Shifting Marketplace during Thundercrack Carnivale 2018. Explains why Thornspell seems more mature than she should be.

However, it’s too long to put on a Flight Rising bio. So you can view it here. It’s a Google Docs.
