HAL may look like a typical hatchling dragon, but he is actually a fully-functioning artificial intelligence. HAL is capable of speech, speech recognition, facial recognition, natural language processing, lip reading, art appreciation, interpreting emotional behaviors, automated reasoning, and playing chess. This makes him ideal for communications between coatl and fae members of the clan who struggle to understand one another.

HAL favors his creator, Urbana, and the winsome yet conniving Basalt due to their separate efforts in creating and developing HAL.
