Biography

"Aeterna Vendela" is a name that may ring a bell for some people, particularly for those who hail from the Shifting Expanse. It seems to bring up some mixed feelings; some people describe her as a benevolent queen who brought her kingdom to prosperity through nothing but her wits and determination. Others say that she was a scheming tyrant who cared for nothing but power and wealth, exploiting everyone for her own gain. However, both of these types of people will agree on one thing: Queen Aeterna Vendela is long gone. She died with her kingdom. The Aeterna Vendela who stands by Samhain's side today may have the same name, the same stiff posture, and the same short-tempered attitude, but she is not exactly the same person. This skydancer lacks all of the confidence and resolve of the queen, her "the ends justifies the means" attitude, her hunger for power; she merely a shadow of what that ruler was. Not that the queen doesn't matter; quite the opposite, really. She may be long gone, but her influence stubbornly remains. Aeterna knew from the day her kingdom fell that she would never be able to escape her past. How could she, when she practically invested her entire being into her kingdom? The bloody sacrifices she made, the shady deals she formed, the nasty tricks she pulled; the kingdom may be gone, but the sins she committed to build it lingered. And now that her vision was no longer obscured by her riches and power, they stared her dead in the eye. She had no choice but to acknowledge what she did. Part of the blame for Aeterna's transition from ruthless leader to gloomy subordinate does fall on Samhain. Adrienne's daughter had come out of nowhere, descending from the clouds and dropping on her kingdom like a tornado. Within the hour, she razed everything to the ground. Everything Aeterna had built in the kingdom-- the buildings, the farmland, her citizens-- the things she made with her sacrifices were reduced to rubble faster than she could hope to save them. And when Samhain held her at swordpoint and demanded her loyalty, Aeterna simply obeyed. What was left of her kingdom to fight for? She would be resisting for nothing if she objected to Samhain's command. Queen Aeterna Vendela is dead, and has been so for a while. The dragon who is in Samhain's private army and helps command her forces is but a mere shadow of the vicious queen that lived in the Shifting Expanse years ago, her life now filled with nothing but gloom and guilt. Aeterna Vendela may be alive, but the queen is now nothing but history. ▬▬ ORIGIN ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Aeterna used to have the mindset that "the ends justify the means." They were convinced that, no matter how awful their actions may have been, it was for the better. They were taught by their parents to value survival above all else, including morality; dealing with the consequences of this would come after the storm passed. It was deemed vital for living in a warn-torn kingdom on the verge of collapse. As a result, Aeterna grew up with an intense fear of death and vowed to avoid it no matter the cost. If it weren't for such an upbringing and the fact that they inherited the heavy responsibility of ruling the kingdom when they were barely an adult, perhaps Aeterna would've had a different, kinder mindset. But a kind heart won't necessarily help someone survive through war; fate and catastrophe do not care if someone is "good" or "bad." They give and take as they please without regard for who is being affected, turning a blind eye to the world. To keep their kingdom safe, to survive, Aeterna felt that they could not afford to be "soft." The skydancer dragged their kingdom from the dust up to the heavens, not only ensuring that it would survive the war, but also restoring its former prosperity after peace was reestablished. The once ravaged fields became flourishing farmland, the crumbling buildings rebuilt with improved architecture, and new trade deals were established, providing the kingdom with a steady stream of wealth. But the new prosperity of Aeterna's domain belied the blood and lies it was built upon; the kingdom would not have even survived the war if not for the queen's betrayals and manipulation, much less attain the wealth it held now. To restore the fields, Aeterna cheated people out of supplies. To rebuild the kingdom's buildings, Aeterna robbed other nations blind. To establish new trade deals, Aeterna strong-armed trade partners into agreeing with unfair contracts. Aeterna knew these actions were immoral. In the beginning, decision-making was accompanied by much hesitation. Was it really okay to be going this far? Weren't they being selfish? In the end, the skydancer felt that their concerns were irrelevant; survival took priority above everything. Consequences could always be dealt with, but their death was permanent. This mindset lingered even after the war was gone; it couldn't just disappear so simply. Survival was all Aeterna ever knew. So they carried this value with them as they rebuilt their kingdom. They had to make sure that if something like this ever happened again, the skydancer could endure it. Building the prosperity of their kingdom would greatly boost its chances of survival, especially for war. Once more, Aeterna pushed morality down on their list of priorities. For a while, they forgot. While the horrors of war would never truly leave them, they began to drift to the back of their mind. Aeterna had never experienced prosperity and peace before, and they were eager to savor it for as long as they could. Who knows when they would be torn from them? The consequences of their actions seemed like all but a distant concern, but ignoring the sword of Damocles will not prevent it from falling. When Samhain razed the kingdom to the ground, Aeterna thought about the consequences for their actions in a moral sense for the first time. The skydancer had thought about them plenty in the past, but only about how they would manage them when they arose. The fact that they were caused by a lack of their own morality was of little concern. But without their kingdom and prosperity to obscure their view, Aeterna could not help but wonder if anything they did was really worth it. All those sacrifices, were they for nothing? Bitter and broken, Aeterna felt like the only appropriate fate for them would be punishment; punishment for all the sins they committed in their desperation and greed. After everything they did, they all but deserved to bow their head and become subordinate to someone wicked, condemned to follow their every whim, no matter how cruel. So Aeterna pledged their loyalty to Samhain, leaving their old self behind with their destroyed kingdom. Queen Aeterna Vendela was dead, but the skydancer did not mind. That old self of theirs should remain in the past. ▬▬ADDITIONAL ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ » Full Name: Aeterna Vendela II » Age: adult » Pronouns: she/they » Relationship Status: single » Likes: oranges, winter, and peaceful silence » Dislikes: the scent of something burning, spending money excessively, and spicy peanuts
