Amarante
~Escort for the Exalted~
spacey_divider_thingy.png

I remember back when I was livin' in the ol' Crystalspine Reaches, there were two main things I could've seen on the far out horizon of yore. There was a big ol' tree, and this sad lookin' pillar that seemed to be fallin' into the sky, like gravity had turned itself 'round. One day a fancy lookin' Sky visited us, lookin' around with these gray ol' eyes an' wings like a butterfly. She was graceful as a bird, an' I liked birds, 'fact I still do, an' I got real excited when I saw her. She smiled back at me an' said a few words to my mama and pop, 'n my mama nodded, lookin' excited 'n sad at the same time. I ne'er knew 'til then you could look like that, and a few minutes later they an' my siblin's were sayin' their farewellin's 'n the Sky let me get on her back 'n we were off 'n headed toward the big ol' pillar I had seen.
She was a silent one, still is, well, 'cept round me. I like t' think she has a soft spot for me, aft'r all she did take me with her. I thought we were goin' straight for the pillar, but she began to fly down int' this chasm, goin' past all these tunnels until she finally landed us down at the entrance. A big ol' dragon, near three times bigger than the Sky was standin' there. He seemed tired 'n sad like mama, and his dark purple eyes lit up a bit when he saw me. He an' the Sky said a few things, but I didn' really listen. There were dragons movin' all about, and a moment later anoth'r Sky came out of one o' the tunnels, and he had this big ol' goofy smile on his face that just got goofier. "Brought home a little one, didja?" I rememb'r him sayin'. The Sky with the butterfly wings laughed and nodded. I was excited, 'n I nearly fell off her back just as a scary-lookin' dragon 'bout the size of the second Sky came out.
Don't tell mama Vri'd, but I was scared o' her when I first saw her. She had four red eyes 'n her smile seemed a lil' menacing at first. "You must be tired, lugging this little 'Claw. Don't worry, Present, I'll take her to Esten and take good care of her," mama Vri'd said. She let me climb up on her back 'n we went down through the tunnels, an' the walls were either decorated with flowers n' trinkets or had intricate paintin's that were half-faded but wondrous. "Do you have a name, little one?" mama Vri'd asked me, n' I shook my head. She nodded like she understood n' said, "Don't worry about having a name. Some of the dragons that go to serve the Earthshaker never have names, 'cause we believe they'll find their true name while they're serving for the good of Dragonhome. Not that we'd immediately send you out, of course. Oh, and my name is Viridiana, by the way. We're going to see Esten, the clan leader, before we get you settled in. Is that alright, dear?" Mama Vri'd liked to talk a while sometimes. I didn't get the chance to ask her what an Earthshaker or Dragonhome was, 'cause by then we were already face-to-face with Esten. She was a small Tundra, but still bigg'r than me at th' time. Her smile was easy an' her deep brown eyes were kind and full o' compassion. They talked a while an' I looked around at the walls. Then I noticed mama Vri'd was turnin' around and goin' back through the tunnels.
When she stopped, we were in a nice sorta room with a buncha oth'r dragons. A red bird had its head tucked und'r its wing, an' it perked up aft'r it saw mama Vri'd. "Who's this lovely little Wildclaw?" a Guard asked from one o' th' corners o' th' room. It must've been sunfall by then, 'cause I was yawnin' and a Sky with orange wings was curled up beside her, a dark wispy wolf layin' by her other side. "No name yet," mama Vri'd replied. I looked curiously at th' lil' flower on the wrist o' th' Sky. "Amarante. It means 'flower,'" the Sky suddenly said. I had't realized that his eyes were open a touch, the same brown as Esten n' the Guard he was with. Phyress, her name is. A wonderful sentry. I hope she rests soon. I laughed an' nodded. I like flowers, but I've always liked birds too. Mama Vri'd noticed me yawnin' up a storm an' tucked me int' a nest beside hers. A lil' plush was sittin' near it, like a green fox with flowers all over 't. I gladly tucked my head und'r my wing an' let myself fall asleep.
I woke up 't a lil' gray fox sniffin' me. It had crystals growin' out th' sides o' its face 'n shoulders. "Khrisy," I chirped, an' it wagged its tail. I love Khrisy. They're such a wonderf'l companion out in the remains o' Dragonhome.
I noticed anoth'r dragon walkin' by, a Mirr, an' there was a bird flyin' above its head. I'll ne'er regret followin' after that Mirr. She's a great friend, just like Khrisy. She didn' yell at me when she noticed me followin' her. She was a good few years older than me, 'course I was a hatchlin' when I came. "The name's Lyndel," she told me. We were stopped in one o' the tunnels leadin' up to th' surface. "And you are Amarante, correct?" She laughed when my eyes went a widenin'. I can't tell you how she knows seemin'ly everythin'. She introduced me to her bird Kai an' I showed her Khrisy. "That Vulstal's been here a while. I'm glad it found a dragon." Lyndt is so nice. Aft'r we talked a while, slowly headin' up the tunnel, she stepped out to the gatherin' dawn an' spread her wings. I hadn' noticed her clothes 'till then, but before I could say somethin' she was up in th' air, an' mama Vri'd was beside me.
"Don't pay Lyndel any mind, little one. No one understands her. Come on, let's get you something to eat," she said, 'n I wanted to tell her that I liked Lyndt, but somethin' I've learned from my short time here in th' Breach is that no one quite likes her all that much. Anyhow, there's no arugin' with mama Vri'd so I followed her back down int' the dimmer light o' the caves an' to one big ol' large room. An' I'll tell ya, it is a biggin. A dark Imperi with pretty ol' gold silks around her was talkin' to a purple Imperi with wings like a butterfly. An' they were huge. The purple Imperi gave me a gentle ol' smile an' the dark one said hi. Other dragons were passin' by me, all of different colors an' shapes an' sizes. I seemed to be the only youngin' there. It was and is still rather fright'ning at times. Sometimes I wonder if an Imperi will knock me ov'r. Oh well.
