Important Lore Concepts

Listed below are some important concepts to understanding my lore and characters.

Age:
Dragons do not age in the typical fashion, nor do they die of old age. As dragons grow older, their resevoir of magic slowly grows until it eventually begins to 'leak', resulting in physical manifestations of their element. The effect is more prevalent in some dragons than others, and varies between individuals. These dragons are considered to be 'ancients', a separate concept from ancient breeds. There is no set age when a dragon becomes an ancient, it's just when they reach the point where their power is at its peak. (As once it begins to leak, there is only so much more their power can grow until it plataues.)

Tales from Sornieth:
Carcaere's collection of stories from the dragons she has met around the world.

A Waste
Years after her cousin assassinated their grandfather and attempted to kill her for the clan’s throne, Scree returns to her birth clan to exact revenge and claim what is rightfully hers. However, when she arrives the clan is dead, and there is nothing left to do but mourn what she could have had.

Proud
Opheria returns home from her first, disastrous, expedition with the Pack. Upon returning home, Opheria feels guilt and attempts to avoid a confrontation with her mother. Scree, however, has different ideas.

Statements I have made about the clan lore:

'Within my lore, dragons don't die of old age either. Rather, as they age their store of elemental magic grows, until it's so vast that it begins to 'leak' and physically manifests on their bodies - e.g. an ancient ice dragon will grow layers of ice over their scales. The air around an old dragon is tangibly charged with their escaping excess, and there are some career mages who dedicate themselves to following around old clans to use their excess to fuel their spells.

For dragons in my lore, exaltation means exactly what it means in canon. The dragon goes to serve a deity directly, and it's the greatest honour. A huge festival is thrown if a dragon is chosen for exaltation, and at the end they climb upon one of the ancient exaltation pillars that can be found across Sornieth and just... Wait. Their friends and family will come visit while they wait, entertain them and say their goodbyes. One day, everyone arrives and the dragon is just gone, and in their place is a small token from the deity to reassure everyone that the dragon has gone to join them. No one knows what exactly happens when a dragon is exalted, and only a few throughout history have ever returned, none of them quite able to recall exactly what being exalted was like, but knowing that it was their choice to come back.

Within my lore clan, funeral rites mimic exaltation. Dragons are laid on biers modelled after exaltation pillars, where their element will slowly escape and change them. E.g. ice dragons become encased in never-melt ice and shadow dragons just seem to... fade... It's considered akin to exaltation, and the dragons of the clan believe that the deceased's spirit has been exalted to join their deity even if their body remains.'
