Biography
Walpurgisnacht is lucky to be alive.
A curse had fallen on her mother, a paradigm stated thus: any child begotten of Mercury or any of her consorts would die lest they leave the Plaguelands and ne'er return. At first, Mercury desperately tried to save her and her clan's children in any way she could. Chasing them away, selling them to friendly passing clans, even going so far as to bathe in the Wyrmwound in an attempt to break the curse and free her offspring from their potential fate. Yet, she watched as child after child succumbed to death and disease, never the same way twice. Some died for seemingly no reason, some were killed by warring beast clans, some by disease, and all left a gaping hole and a pained rage in her heart. After a while, she stopped trying to save the children actively. She would send some off with neighboring clans if they passed by and showed interest, but no more did she try to save every one, her will broken. She would shuffle them to the back of the lair to try to keep them from more violent deaths of rabid beasts or passing vagabonds, but did not try to stop their ailments. If given the chance, she would exalt them herself in hopes that the deities would save them the pain of death. |
It was on a goodwill trip to Clan Thistle to drop off gifts and provisions that Kasia stumbled upon Walpurgis, sickly and lethargic. Her much smaller siblings had already succumbed to the illness and it was only a matter of time until Wapurgis herself moved no more. The older coatl immediately started fretting over the child while Mercury watched with half disinterest and half anger, caught between apathy and jealousy that Clan Aorai would not face the same curse. She would not admit the tiny spark of relief that rested within her that at least one of her children would find a home and perhaps a new life. Kasia handed over what few shining gems she had as a dowry and gathered the small sick coatl up before returning to the Beacon of the Radiant Eye. At first, some of the members of Clan Aorai were enraged that the old queen would bring a dragon so sick into their midst. They accused her of attempted sabotage and stupidity that she would put them in danger of disease; some even thinking to attack her and drive her away. It wasn't until MortalCyn towered over them and reminded them all that they too were damned and could hardly be hurt that they backed off. He guarded his beloved and the tiny coatl fiercely while Kasia carefully tended to her, both day and night. |
It wasn't long before the child grew better, stronger, more fit, and only a few days had passed when she made a full recovery. She romped and played with the other hatchlings before they went to their new homes or to serve their deities, took part in pranks with Beale or Cipher, learned to knit from Cynicism, and helped Orchid tend the gardens. She was happy, for a time. But, as her body grew larger and her spirit grew older, she began to ask of her parents; where they were, and how she came to be tended by Kasia. Few wanted to answer her questions for fear of hurting the exuberant coatl, but Belila grinned wide as she always did. Mephistopheles can tell you, if you ask pretty~ Mephistopheles had lived with the Thistle Clan for a time before moving on and joining Aorai, and saw his own children affected by the curse. He rarely spoke of it, spoke to very few in Aorai for that matter, and made an intimidating space to keep it that way. Walpurgisnacht was undeterred and approached him every day until he finally broke down and spoke. He told her about the curse, and how her mother had grown tired and bitter from watching her children pass away. How the children were either sent off for a dowry, exalted, or died. How she was well on her way to death when Kasia brought her home, and how the clan turned on her for doing so. How the hardly-there MortalCyn had to frighten them off lest they slaughter her themselves for fear of infection. |
The more Mephisto spoke, the more incredulous the young dragon became. Surely this was nothing more than a tale meant to keep her in check. She couldn't even remember being sick, let alone nearly dying! She thanked Mephistopheles for his time before beginning her plans. She would make a pilgrimage to the Wyrmwound to meet her parents and dispel the lies she had been told. She left in the middle of the night mostly unnoticed, aside from the Demon Twins. They followed her far back so she would not notice them, but intended to keep her safe from the harm they were sure would befall her. |
She traveled for a solid day before the ground gave away to decay and death, and continued onward. Before long, her breath came ragged and her muscles ached, her chest constricting painfully, but she persevered until she came upon the Thistle Clan. Now fully grown, surely her parents would be glad to see her! To embrace her! To tell her the truth! This was not the case. |
Immediately upon seeing the stumbling coatl, Mercury's hackles raised and she became vicious, angry, scared. Walpurgis desperately tried to speak to her mother, but Mercury would not listen, only shrieking get out! Get out! Leave here, and never return! The older dragon dug her claws into the crumbling relief of the Wyrmwound and launched herself at her child, jaws snapping and snarling, pushing her child back. Walpurgisnacht fled, fueled by adrenaline and the other coatl fiercely chasing her away. Once out of the plaguelands, she collapsed, exhausted and sick. Beale and Cipher carefully took her home, the chore made easier by her low weight and Cipher's magic. It took a few days but she recovered as though nothing had happened, none of the other dragons any wiser as to her trip. |
Her ordeal, however, had left her bitter and confused. No more did she play with the hatchlings, nor did she knit or play pranks. Instead, she holed herself up towards the back of the cave where Aorai took its shelter and stewed over why her own mother would chase her away so violently. It took her days to realize that the second she had stepped into the Plaguelands again that her body began to fail her. It took a few more days to accept that had Mercury not chased her off, she would have died there. With that epiphany, she left her isolation and rejoined the clan as a whole. |
And if Mephistopheles found himself with the largest of the fresh-caught fish every day for a few weeks, (and herself with jewels draped around her), who was to complain? |
