Backstory
Trigger warnings: Parents death, depressive episode.

Wave's clanmates always told her that the day she was born the wind was blowing strongly in almost unatural waves. It was a cold night and Dandelion Clan had prepared festivities to welcome the soon'to'be new members. Everyone was dancing and singing, gathering around a giant fire that had been installed in anticipation of the hatching.
It was in that happy ambient that Wave was born in the security of the Dandelion clan. Welcomed by the songs and fond looks of her clanmates, protected by her mother's embrace and her fathers's reassuring presence.

Daughter of two of the best hunters in the clans, Wave had her destiny written for her since the begging, all she had to do was to follow their path. Or so she thought...
A few years later, she had grown up agile and quick, and most importantly had an ability in moving in silence which made her accidentaly sneak up on people. She was the pride and joy of her parents and carried the hope of her clan who were seing a bright future for her as a talented huntress.
Every morning her dad would give her hunting lessons, teaching her how to fight and set traps and every aftertnoon her mother would teach her how to track down a prey and how to use her abilities to stay silent and become one with her environments.

It was to day that her days were pretty charged, but no matter how busy she was, she always made sure to take time for her best friend Breeze, a young skydancer she had grown up with.
Everything was going fine in Wave's life, she was learning fast, her future was bright and there was no reason she thought that would ever change.

tQC7H2a.gif One night though, the Bell alarm of the clan rang. Everyone knew that while the place they lived was mostly peaceful, some wild and dangerous beasts were living outside. From time to time the bell would ring and everyone would have to go to shelters and stay still while the hunters and guards would take care of it.

Wave was excited and scared at the same time, it was the first time the bell had ring since she had hatched and she was looking forward to finally be able to use her huntress abilities she had worked so hard on. She was watching her parents prepare themselves and was getting agitated. Unfortunately when she asked her father to come help hunt the target, he refused shaking his head. "You're not ready yet" he just told her. Frustrated she wanted to argue but her mother gently gave her one of her kind heabum full of fondness that always silenced her. "One day you'll be ready, I promise. Until then, listen to your father and wait here. We'll be back soon" and with a gentle muzzle nudge she followed Wave's father outside.

Wave watched them go with the other hunters until she couldn't see them anymore, their shadow disappearing in the night. With a resigned sight, she decided to go to her best friend's place so she wouldnt wait alone.

Hours had passed, a storm has started and the rain was pouring. It was way passed her bedtime hour and yet Wave still couldn't fall asleep. Anxiety and fear were tightening her chest in a vicious grip. Thankfully she wasn't alone. She looked at her side to the sleeping form of her friend sprawled in their cushioned nest. A small smile formed on her lips as she watched her snoring softly in that awkward position. Breeze had tried to stay awake with her as long as she could but had ended up falling asleep after a while, tiredness winning over worries. Still Wave felt thankful for all what Breeze and her family did for her. They had welcomed her without hesitation and proposed for her to stay until the hunters came back.
She has been friends with Breeze since as long as she could remember, the two girls were close and always at each other's nests. With time she had grown to be as much part of her family as Breeze was part of her's. Breeze turned in her sleep and unconsciously snuggled against Wave. It was surrounded by her warmth that she finally fell asleep.

Wave was awakened early in the morning by the chirppin of birs and sunrays on her scales. She groaned a bit and shook her head when she heard some angry talking outside. She looked at her side where Breeze was also getting out of her sleep. She extracted herself from her friend's embrace and stretched yawning after this mostly sleepless night.

She suddenly realised with excitment, surely her parents and other hunters must have arrived if there was noise this early. She rushed toward the wooden door, a big smile planted on her face. It fell as soon as she opened it when she constated the chaos outside. Dragons were screaming , healers rushing past her in all directions. Mourning cries and angry whispers and groans were heard.

Wave's excitement got replaced by sinking anxiety. She was still stunned in place when she felt a movement behing her. It was her friend Breeze who finally caught up with her. She was as astonished as her seing the look that crossed her face. She slowly turned toward her friend, a worried look on her face. "Wave" she whispered with uncertainty. That took her out of her stoned position and without a word, a determined yet mixed with fear look on her face, she rushed toward the crowd. She could hear her friend following her not far behind but stayed focused on the one thought she needed to confirm. She needed to find her parents, needed to see they were ok.

She gasped crossing some injured hunters. Among them was one that was recognised among all for his skills. He was one of those who would sometime come home to take a drink with his parents. He seemed badly injured. She rushed toward him and when he turned toward her she realised horrified he had an eye closed, most likely lost in what appeared to be a vicious battle.

'Have you seen my parents?' she asked desperate. He looked at her for a long moment, seemingly bothered by something. Then he finally turned his single eye away in a sorry expression, clenching his teeth hard and whispered "I'm sorry..." . Wave could hear Breeze gasp behind her at what it meant.

"No...no...no..." she felt her heart beat faster, her throat soaring tightly. She shook her head stuned. looked around her with a desperate look. She could feel her legs shaking, her claws out grasping depserately to the ground in a deperate attempt to hold herself in the moment. It could'nt be happening. It wasn't true.

Be1t6tl.gif She shook her head again then started running , eyes glistening with emotion. She barely heard Breeze calling her name behind her. Her claws were tearing the muddy ground in her rush, her steps heavy, people had to avoid her as she didnt care who she bumped into. She didnt have time for this, all she wanted was to go to the gate. She passed the injured dragons coming back one after another, more or less wounded. Rushed pass them, only taking a second to look at each face before keeping going.

Once she reached the giant gate she sitted still, her tail curled around her, claws deep in the ground and the wait started. She heard Breeze arriving out of breath at some point but didnt pay her more attention. All she could see were the huntsmen lookign for two particularly. "It's a lie" she kept repeating in her head. she stayed there, with Breeze. Not talking. An hour passed and before she knew it the sun had started its fall of the day.

Beside her, her friend had grew more and more restless. At one point she looked at her with a sad face and told her she'd be back soon. Wave didnt aknowledge her nor responded. She didnt want to miss her parents so she kept looking in front of her. Breeze came back some time later with her mom.

"Wave?" when she didnt respond she gently surrounded her with a gentle wing. " Wave we discussed with my husband and we think you should stay with us... for now. Let's go home ok?" After a moment of her not responding she gently put a paw on her shoulder. "Wave?"

That finally cut her out of her trance. and with wide empty eyes she answered her. 'But I can't leave. I still need to welcome my parents back. They'll arrive soon now I'm sure" she then turned back toward the now silent entrance of the clan. Breeze, a worried look on her face kept staring at her back. "I.. I see. I will be back Wave" replied her mother, her face shatering for a second. However Wave was too busy staring in front of her to see it. She pushed her daughter toward their home even if she didn't want to leave. Breeze' dad came to her later with some food and a warm cover. Without a word he put the cover on her and silently sat on her side. He also forced some food at some point that she ate without really paying it any attention.

As much as she wanted to keep looking for her parents, she ended up unable to fight tiredness and fell into slumber at some point. Then, slowly and with all the care of the world, Breeze' father took her still warped in the blanket and brought her home. He put her softly beside an anxious Breeze who was waiting unable to sleep. When her dad left the room after tellign her to get some sleep, she wrapped herself around Wave, hoping the small gesture would bring her comfort and let her get at least some rest.

In the morning, Wave woke up and for the first time she felt her friend's house was an unfamiliar place and a lonely feel slowly rose within herself. She suddenly felt someone watching her, she turned her head to see Breeze looking at her worriedly. Without a word, she slowly approached her, making sure she could withdraw if she wanted to. When Wave didn't she slowly wrapped their tails together and hugged her tight. Slowly, unsure Wave hugged her back.

They got up and Breeze' dad told them they'd go look for any survivors or injured that hadn't come back last day with other members of the clan. Her mother had exchanged a look with him and with a nod he left for the rest of the day. He and the others volunteers came back late that day. But when he finally came back, after being welcomed by his family he went straight to Wave and held something to her.

She looked and recognised her mom's feathers her dad had offered her as a wedding birthday gift one day, with it was her dad's single chimera teeth necklace that he was always proudly wearing after defeating one of those dangerous beast surrounding the village in his youth. both were tainted with blood.

Wave felt her world shatter into million pieces. Her last hope to see her parents was gone. She felt empty and unsure of her future for the first time ever. Her look became torn and empty, devoid from its usual energy. The next days she also lost her appetite and with it some weight. She didn't care about anyhing anymore and started to neglect her cleaning, not caring to sharpen her claws, or polish her scales so they'd shine. At some point eventually, she decided to go back to her parent's house, the only place with her family memories or her parent's smell. She passed hours in their nest, burrying herself in their remaining scent. But even that was slowly fading as days passed.

Breeze was coming to visit her everyday as soon as her training finished. She would stay close and bring food and help her clean. Then she would hop in the nest beside her and cuddle with her, sharing a comforting warm. It was the only time of the day Wave was seemingly more alive. She'd give small smiles to her friend trying to cheer her. But with time she was starting to get weaker. The feelings of how much she missed their lunches together finally coming back to her. Dark thoughts were invading her mind, hope to be soon reunited with her family. She closed her eyes, weak. She was cold. Where was Breeze? She'd miss her... She couldn't even say goodbye...

A sound in the distance. An annoying sound disturbing her peace. Who dared? "...ve!" She tried to ignore it and kept letting herslef go... "WAVE! Please Answer me!!!!"Urgh that voice was becoming annoying. And they were now shaking her roughtly how rude!

With a groan and some smoke getting out of her nostril with anger she finally opened her eyes. Her anger stopped as soon as she was met with the teary face of her best friend, Breeze. She looked at her, confused for a minute before finally being able to rise a bit from her nest. "Breeze? What's..." She didn't have time to finish her senteced that Breeze started to cry louder "Thank god you're alright,. I... I thought I was too late... I ... I don't know" she bawled with a hiccup. 'I dont know what I'd do without you" she threw herself at her friend and kept crying. Weak, Wave did her best to hold her back, her sobbing made it a bit dificult but it was the first time she was seing her like this.

"What do you mean you thought you were too late?" she asked confused. Breeze let her go and an angry sparkle was litting her eyes. " Have you not seen your state? You look awful! You're starving, you only have your scales on your bones! You barely even get up from there anymore! I.. IM losing you!" Wave was a bit taken aback by the ferocity her usual soft and laughing friend was sending her way. "I , I know what happened to you was awful. I know you're in great pain. I can't even imagine what you're going through right now. But ... but do you think that's what your parents would want for you? Do you think they sacrificed their life just so you throw it away like that? Your parents will always be loved and remembered here and one day you'll see them again but.... but... not right now! Not like this?!? What about us the living? I know they were your parents but we lost them too!"

At this Wave's anger came back "you think I don't know that?" "No you DON'T" Breeze' tail was now hitting the floor with anger. "We already lost them and so many other hunters. We... no, I don't want to lose you too." at this , Breeze"s voice cracked and her anger turned into such sadness that it left Wave unable to answer or think properly. She just felt her own eyes watering. Breeze came closer and gently brushed her tail with her own before closing the gap and hugging her tight. "I don't want to lose you too. We need you... I need you" Wave sniffed heavily and hugged her tighter. "You're not alone Wave. I promise. I'll never leave you" Breeze's chest felt tight as she took a shaking breath and let herself get wrapped into her friend's comforting warmth. "Im not alone.". .. "I never was" Wave pulled back softly and brushed her friend's tears with her tail. "I'm sorry. I'll get better I swear."

tumblr_p9bcpuJ2dC1whr7rxo3_640.png
This night, for the first time in months, Wave forced herself out of the nest and with Breeze's help she went back to her friends house where she was welcomed with fond smiles and even some tears before getting another family hug. Wave would never be able to thank them enough. They helped her slowly recover. She ate and her strenght came back with time. She knew what she wanted to do. With the clan leader's permission she got back to hunting training. Her motivation was high.

The hunters who were attacked that day and could make it back to the clan had reported being attacked by a ferocious Roc, unusually larger thank those bird beasts already were. When the volunteer came back wiht the victims memories they had found some hints going in that direction. Now that she was back on her feet and healthy, Wave knew what she wanted to do. The only thing she could do to honor her parents' memory. She would chase that Roc, no matter the time it would take. It was her prey and hers only. She would avenge her parents and all the victims of that fateful day. Even if it was the last thing she would do.

Wave's training was rough, it took time, she had to do efforts. But she finally rose up as one of the best hunters just like her parents did before. She passed the lead hunter's tests without problem no one could match her now. It had been a few years since the incident now, she had grown strong, and had won back her agility and speed. She was now so silent in her moving that she would even involuntarily surprise other clanmates, whom not always reacted well to this sneaking up. She was her playful self again.

One day she finally felt ready and with her lead's approval, she said farewel for some time to her new family. They watched her go, worried but they knew she needed this and she wasnt at small hatchling anymore, so with heavy hearts they wished her a good hunt and let her depart.

Wave tracked that giant Roc for months. Each time she thought she was getting close it would escape her again and again. She got frustrated, sometimes it was hard. But she always found the rage to move on thanks to her families. Before leaving Breeze gave her a special gift, it was her parents jewels that she had cleaned and fixed after so long. With a trembling paw, she had put her mothers feathers on her head and her dad's necklace around her neck. Those two items gave her the strengt she needed in the hardest moments of the hunt. But one day she finaly found it.

The beast had made a nest inside a mountain near the harpy's hoost, at the top of it Wave could see the entrance. She prepared herself and stealthly entered the dark cavern. Her muscles were tensed but her feet precise. she didnt make a sound. On the floor many bones belonging to different creatures were scattered. She was careful not to touch anything with her feet or tail. As she got deeper a heavy sound was heard and she soon found herself in front of the sleeping figure of the Roc she had imagined so many times before. Finally it was time to avenger her family and the hunters who lost their lives during the event. She took her time to adjust her weapon... and pounced.

After months worrying for her friend Wave, Breeze finally saw her coming back and was wondering if she was hallucinating. She was harboring a souvenir belonging to the giant bird she had succeeded in defeating. She also seemed really exhausted, her long body struggling to walk but with a clearly proud posture and earnest smile stuck on her face. It was the first time since the incident that Wave seemed so happy and Breeze could feel her chest bloom with fondness as the other Spiral approached and finally stopped at her level. They stared at each other with moved smiles, eyes shining. It was over. Breeze could see it, Wave was finally free from her past. They hugged and went back home together.

k9XAtsK.png im1.pngEpilogue:

After what seemed to be the hunt of her life, Wave had decided to hang up her hunter carreer and went to look for a more peaceful life. She decided to become a courier for the clan and leave that sad past of hers behind. With her new job she could still go outside but didn't have to fight anymore. Unfortunately for her clan she never lost her sneaky habits and still scared many clanmates when she seemed to appear out of nowhere with a cheerful voice. They did try to give her a bamboo linen cape, adorned oversized bells that would announce her presence to others, unfortunately for them it had no effect as she quickly learned how to stop the bells from ringing.

After avenging her family, her personality slowly went back to the one she had as a child before her traumatic event. She was kind and bubbly which was quite a change. Soon after coming back, she had packed her most important belongings with the help of Breeze and her parents and she had moved out of her parent's old house to go live with them permanetly.

After tonight's job she was quite tired, she stretched as she landed in the clan's main hall. "Wave!" she heard someone call from behind and she turned with a small smile, went to meet up with her friend Breeze who was waiting for her. Just as when she was younger, she may have been busy having to fly from places to places, but she always made sure to meet up with Breeze at the end of the day. They softly bumped their heads together laughing lightly, play fighting gently before proceeded to exchange how their day went while going back home together.

Looking fondly at her best friend Wave thought she was finally happy and wondered if her parents were watching over her from where they were. "Don't worry. I'll be ok now" she had stopped walking and closed her eyes, a soft smile pulling her jaw. 'Wave?" she opened her eyes to meet the questioning look on Breeze's face. She smiled reassuringly and shook her head softly. Then she shoulder bumped her friend and started running toward their home laughing. "Hey wait for me!" breeze said laughing and running after her. "Catch me if you can" replied Wave. The two Spirals laughed together as they. Wave didn't know what life had in store for her, but she now was certain that whatever it was, her future would be bright again.
