Murkwood had always seemed to take after his father. Just like Sycamore, he could blend into the shadows and stalk even the most observant of creatures. Part of this was because he was mentored and favored by his father, often being woken up early to hunt with him. The other part was just his natural instincts.

When Murkwood and his nine siblings were kidnapped by slavers, he fought like hell. He fought not only for himself, but also for his older sister Grove. While she had taught him to respect nature and acceptance of death, she was unable to defend herself. Grove had been favored by her mother, and Sycamore had never taught her how to fight.

Murkwood broke out of his bonds and immediately ran to check on Grove, but was hauled back by two of the guards. He desperately slashed and attacked anything he could, but it was to no avail. The pearlcatcher, in the frenzy, was accidentally kicked into the road. The caravan of slavers sped away and though he tried to track them down, Murkwood soon came to realize that his sister was lost forever.

Shame filled him and he knew that his father would not accept Murkwood as his son anymore. He had failed to save his siblings, and to return would only bring more guilt. Why should he live his life in peace when Grove would live hers in torment?

Months of traveled followed soon after, and he made no effort to find out where he was going. At every town and clan he came to, Murkwood would ask anyone about slavers and his family. Most dragons had no idea what he was talking about. But one messenger had recieved news.

Neighboring the messenger’s group was a clan in the Rotrock Rim. They recently had a visit from a caravan, and only one pearlcatcher was escorted out. He couldn’t recall what they needed her for, but most dragons were treating her as kindly as they could.

Relieved that his sister was somewhat safe, Murkwood began his journey up to the Plague territory. However, when he reached the edge, he was immediately attacked by a pack of mirrors. They mauled him until bone deep scars decorated his body like jewels.

The pearlcatcher dragged himself to the Reedcleft Ascent where he was found by Emblem, an ambassador of the Windstorm Clan. Murkwood was brought back to the coven where he was nursed to health. Emblem convinced Murkwood to write a letter instead of trying to fight his way to his sister. Since sending the letter, he has remained in the Windstorm Clan, making his living as the Captain of the Rangers.
