Background: Holier than thou, sanctimonious, and aloof, Citadel considers herself a divine being; blessed by the Lightweaver herself with her brilliant mind, her eye for beauty, and her extra set of forearms she views as absolute proof of her divine touch. In her eyes, it is her calling, her life’s purpose, to bring the Light’s sanctity to the farthest reaches of Sornieth, and make majestic the unbridled wilds of the Southern Ice. She has settled in with the Sleetspines mostly because she sees them as less barbaric than many other Icefield clans.

Themes: Divinity, a light shining in the dark places, arrogance, solar inspired architecture, ice and light entwined.

Goals: Share the brilliance of the Light with all of Sornieth, spreading it to every corner.

A Light in Dark Places

“And pour,” Citadel instructed, her voice a bell of a thing, pure as light, pure as snow. It wasn’t a request, or even an order, so much as a statement of fact. The dragons she’d drafted in for the latest labor on the castle would pour the specially prepared water down the laquered wooden tube; that was all there was to it.

She pressed one claw against the tube, feeling the water start to slosh down. Messy, imprecise, but not for long. It would be held in place by the waterproof construct, freezing without adhering to the prepared wood.

Within a few hours it would become a veined column, a hatchling’s skull-width across, inlaid into the smoother, darkened ice the structure had been built of. Water treated carefully, removed from shadow’s reach, flecked with crystalline dust, every ‘crack’ accounted for, all bent to a beautiful purpose.

Her thesis on the Sleetspines themselves, in truth.

It was just past dawn, she’d been working through the night with her assistants. Moving the channels, pouring the columns. For each she’d had to scrape away stone and ice from the already present structure, sometimes in ceilings and floors, all to forge a continuous network, each of the thin, inlaid, columns of treated ice would connect, bleed together.

Tapping on the current wooden tube once more, she departed, checking on the others that were freezing and forming still, traveling back up to the castle’s highest level. They’d be ready there, now.

She didn’t move with any extra fervor, or haste, but she did feel a certain eagerness despite that. Not that she was unseemly enough to show it. She must set an example, and with this latest project, her chosen clan would be as obviously blessed by her presence and skill as they were in truth. Even their barbarian neighbors would need acknowledge it.

Reaching the very first column she’d laid that evening, she placed four claws against it, and whispered a soft prayer of respect. Carefully, precisely, she removed the lacquered wood, her eyes closed.

Citadel did not doubt. She knew what she would see when she opened them. But she refused to see this first column in anything less but it’s fullest glory. She wouldn’t cheapen the experience by making it something piecemeal.

Once the tube was disassembled, set aside, she opened her eyes, and let out a pleased hiss.

The column’s planned striations ran up and down it’s length. And they were glowing, softly, nothing so crude as a torch or a lantern. No it gave off a gentle, soft light. Something that wouldn’t prevent sleep, but could still guide the way.

The column lead up to the roof, where she’d placed a treated disk of ice and mirrors to catch the day’s light, and to reflect it down the columns that fed into it; each one of them starting there before descending. Each would then feed into the next, magnifying in discrete places, reflecting, ever moving, thrumming. Filling the massive structures of ice and stone with a truly civilized feature. The first of many, each elevating them higher, each tied and laced with the brilliance of her own brightness. The shining divinity of Light would spill out for all to admire. She ensured it.

These would even hold light for up to a few days after receiving it. Each night would be filled with the same effervescent twilight, refilled, revivified, with the dawn.

“Light to the darkest corners. Light beautified in ice. All shall see. All shall witness,” she whispered, admiring her own accomplishment. At least for a moment.

She still had the rest to reveal.

And more plans to make.
