Lapis remembered the Southern Icefields well. She missed them occasionally, thinking back to the unforgiving but still comforting cold and ice. Her parents were about the same way. Whenever something was wrong, they would scold her harshly. Ice dragons aren’t particularly affectionate and her parents were no exception. However, most other times they treated her with respect like their other children. Lapis being one of the youngest of their children, not a lot of pressure was put on her to succeed like with her older siblings. There were a lot of children, lots of siblings, all to compete with in her eyes, thus putting pressure on herself. She wanted to stand out, to be like her mother and father in every way, to gain their attention even if for a while.

This started her obsession and love for books. They were easy to handle, easy to read, easy to make notes in. They brought her comfort when one else could. Lapis saw her mother frequently reading from spellbooks as well as general fiction books, which moved her to get into reading. When her parents had gone to bed, she would read from her mother’s spellbooks. Lapis would never attempt the spells, but she did leave the book right back where she found it. Sometimes she would find a better place to put it and organize her mother’s room where she did her magic.

Then, she got her hands on one of her father’s books. It was all about the World Pillar and the deities. She devoured any book her father had on the deities and the World Pillar. The great knowledge that the World Pillar had was fascinating and ready to be shared with the world. The World Pillar was also deeply connected with magic, and because of this, she started magic. Her mother approved of this and let her practice with her when she had the chance to do it with her.

When Lapis was grown with more spells, tomes, and runes under her care, she set out for the World Pillar. She knew that the Dragonhome was much different than the Southern Icefield she called home. Lapis had read about the climate there, seeing how scorching hot it could become. Lapis didn’t care, though. She would get to that Pillar and she would study it. Her family supported her and let her go without much of a fuss. Intellectual pursuits were highly respected in the Southern Icefield, so it was an easy decision to let her go.

It took her several days to reach the Dragonhome, but once she did, she didn’t realize that she didn’t bring enough water or food for herself. The World Pillar was always in the distance, which inspired her to keep moving, even if it meant starvation or dehydration. Lapis was a smart, rational, organized, dragon, but her limited reading about the Dragonhome didn’t prepare her for the outside world. Her determination was one of her best qualities, but unfortunately it failed her one day while she was walking the cracked earth of the Dragonhome. Starving, exhausted, and dehydrated, she collapsed. The next time she woke up, a bright Guardian stood over her. The Guardian had a warm smile on her face and introduced herself as Aurum.

Lapis was treated for her hunger and thirst with rest, water, and plenty of food. During this time, she spoke with Aurum more. She spoke to her, using her extensive vocabulary, about the World Pillar and how she wished to study it. Aurum couldn’t keep up with all of her words, but understood what she meant. She wasn’t like any dragon Aurum had talked to before and the same went vice versa. The both of them got used to Aurum’s and the Dragonhome’s kinder nature while Aurum got used to the definitive and intellectual dragons of the Southern Icefield.

The time had come eventually for Lapis to prove herself. She was given a small tent and some magic supplies by Aurum when Lapis was strong enough to move on her own and take care of herself. The tent had her tomes, spellbooks, and runes packaged neatly and labeled. Everything had a place in her tent. The sound of alarm was soon sent out to Lapis. Aurum and many others fell ill due to their water source being contaminated. Lapis knew of this before and advised Aurum to stay away, but curiously to her, Aurum said it was her duty to protect her people.

Lapis worked tirelessly through many nights to gain the cure for such an ugly black sludge that attacked dragons internally and externally if swallowed or if it was touched. Her spellbooks helped her greatly, but using her own smarts, the first batch of the cure was made. Lapis gave it to Aurum first and within minutes Aurum was back to her old self. The black sludge disappeared from her body. After another tireless night of making enough of the cure to help the water supply and the people infected, the clan was saved. For her efforts, Aurum crowned her the Aldinwitch. Lapis didn’t think she’d ever become apart of Aurum’s clan. She was an ice dragon through and through, but she had one of the highest honors. Lapis was never sentimental, it wasn’t in her nature, but this new clan felt like a second home for her then.
