Taraka

I was so happy out there. The darkness was beautiful, the distant points of light even more so. I was a wandering asteroid once, flying past planets and stars, chasing the sunrise over the highest mountain of the third planet from the sun of a distant star system. I had seen this planet before, seen the raging turmoil and war that was constantly waged here, and I had no particular desire to stay longer than a quick visit. I am not sure if you realize what your world looks like from the outside, but it is rather frightening. However, interested by something small and bright, I passed just a little too close, and that was my undoing.

There is a planet far from here which has a myth like my story. A boy named Icarus once flew on wings of wax and feathers, and in his joy, he grew careless. He soared wherever he pleased, and did not heed the warning cries of his father. Without realizing it, he climbed the heights of his atmosphere and came so close to touching the star he called his sun that his wings melted and fell apart. The story goes that he fell back to his planet, trying desperately to reach out for his sun and failing. He fell into the ocean and died.

I did not die, but the gravity of your planet pulled me in until I couldn’t stop. I hurtled into the soil of this land as a ball of fire and screaming. Even now, I remember exactly what it felt like. Can you see me screaming? Can you hear me burn? I can. I remember so well, even as I struggle to put the immensity of my grief into your language. But better, I remember the before. I remember what your galaxy looked like from millions of light-years away. I remember what the universe looked like at its heart. I do not know how long I flew. Time means less when passing black holes can slow it down so much that a few seconds to you is a thousand years to someone else, when even years are a variable and confusing concept. But even if my flight had to end like Icarus, grounded forever, I will never regret using my wings.

When I fell here, I unconsciously took the form of the dominant species of this planet, and in this form was I found. A dragon named Xina found me first, and she smiled with kindness when she saw me. “Oh little star, how far you have fallen! I see you weeping for your losses, and I understand your grief. Still, there is nothing to be gained from staying here. Will you come with me? I cannot give you back what you have lost, but I can give you a family.” Seeing nothing better to do, I accepted.

So I came to this clan. I do not know how long I will stay- I am still figuring out what time is like here. I see some things, some fragments of futures and secrets, but I have not yet seen myself leave this clan. Oh! I did not mean to speak of it, but now I have. My sight is a little secret of mine. You will not tell, will you? Thank you Ashana. You are very kind to listen to me and keep my secrets. May I tell you one more?

I think Xina was right. I have found my family here. There is a dragon named Pez, I am sure you have met her, who has captured my heart. That is the right way to say it, yes? I am still learning metaphor, it is a confusing concept. But what I feel for Pez is not confusing. I am not entirely sure that I know your word for it, and I do not wish to get it wrong, as this is very important to me. But if I understand what you mean when you use the word, then I am in love with Pez.

Love is such a strong feeling! I did not know until I felt it how intense the emotions of the biologic can be! But it is not a bad thing. To love is a joy that I do not think I would ever wish to give up. Perhaps not even for the chance to be a wandering star once more. I feel such love for everyone here. Perhaps the reason I do not see myself leaving in my visions is because I will never choose to. I love you too, Ashana. Thank you for loving me.
