Biography
Caelyn’s birth clan dwelled in the darkness of the Tangled Wood. They styled themselves as tricksters and reveled in mischief...though many would call them fiends and say that they reveled in villainy. When Caelyn hatched, the elders declared, “Those clear eyes...He’ll be able to lie with a look. And with a face that pretty, no one will doubt him!”
From a tender age, he learned to pretend he was something else. He could become anybody—on the outside, at least. But inside, the darkness remained....
He learned magic, including spells from other Flights. He grew especially skilled with and entranced by Fire magic. “Perhaps too much,” the elders muttered disapprovingly.
Their subordinates were encouraged to play tricks on each other. It kept wits sharp. There were unspoken rules to ensure that things did not go too far, and clanmates had to be smart enough to recognize and respect these rules. Caelyn, however, didn’t. Not even after receiving a warning—itself a disgrace; what trickster needed to be educated about rules?
Yet Caelyn continued setting things alight, sometimes injuring clanmates. He always affected remorse, saying he was still learning; he would get better at controlling it, he promised. The elders, however, could see what he was turning into.
They called Caelyn to a meeting, greeting him with genial smiles. It was time he tested his skills outside the clan. In the forest, an old fungus tree had fallen. Caelyn had to ignite it. The spores would form a great column of fire, and by this they’d know Caelyn had succeeded.
“Succeeded at what?” Caelyn asked. But already they were shoving him into the forest. Caelyn, still puffed-up with pride, went quickly on his way.
He found the tree and ignited it with no problem. No...the problem came right after. The burning spores created smoke, not flames, and soon Caelyn was coughing. Dizzy...The trees spun around him. He had to get back—at home, they’d congratulate him because he’d succeeded...
“At what?” A horrible suspicion overtook him before he fell unconscious.
He awoke hours later. He hurried home, only to realize he couldn’t find his clan. This was the place they lived, he knew it! But no, there was no evidence anyone had ever lived here. He had been abandoned....
Caelyn wasn’t angry about losing his clan—he was indignant that he’d been tricked. They’d made a fool of him....Well, from now on, he’d be the one fooling everybody.
He never found his birth clan again, but there were many other clans he could fall into...and fool. So many dragons were willing to indulge the handsome Skydancer. He enjoyed the sense of power it gave him, having them in his palm. He could crush them any time he chose. And he frequently did, with fire.
At first he absconded after igniting things, but that wasn’t fun. He wanted to see others’ reactions when they realized their beautiful friend had caused their grief. And so, after setting something alight, he would wait for discovery, then laugh at the heartbroken looks on his clanmates’ faces. He’d give them one last wink before disappearing into the shadows.
That pretty face, laughing with twisted glee, burned itself into many dragons’ minds. They began hunting for Caelyn, spreading his description—and their promises of revenge. Caelyn decided he could hide his face and spin a sob story, say he’d been scarred in some battle. He stole a traveling magician’s mask and clothing to disguise himself.
Eventually, he met Yetora. The deaf Skydancer was friendly and sincere—everything Caelyn was not. “Perfect!” the trickster thought, and ingratiated himself with Yetora, calling him a brother and traveling alongside him. There was safety in numbers, after all.
After some time, they were joined by Artimus. The old warrior never said it directly, but he didn’t trust Caelyn, and the trickster knew it. He would have to lie low for a while. Well, he’d lain low in other clans before. He could pretend to be a friend, even a brother, for as long as it suited him. Then he’d burn it all down and start over elsewhere. All he had to do was wait....
