Biography
Carrick
Ferryman
Guide of the Exalted Ferrymen Some say that serving the gods is an honor. That to be exalted is to ascend to a higher purpose in life where one can truly make a difference by serving their deity directly; a key role in keeping Sornieth balanced and in peace. And there are others that see it with distrust. A forced exile to control the ever growing population. No dragon has ever come back from servitude. Some whisper how maybe the reason for their stay is not such a good one, after all. Regardless of their opinion of those sent to serve the gods, not one dragon looks favorably towards the few that make the way back. Those chosen few work in mysterious ways, taking dragons to their final place besides their gods and coming back to collect the next souls sent into exalted service. Rumors speak of a small fae of otherworldly powers that commands such ferrymen, transporting souls onto the realm of the gods without a trace. But none dare speak of it aloud, lest of all their words make their way to the masters. And above all, those sent to collect the exalted ones must be avoided at all costs. To cross one such dragon would be a very bad thing, indeed. Monster No one is quite sure how Carrick became the creature he is now. Some whisper of shade touched curses, others of undead ghosts roaming the ruins, but Carrick himself has no recollection of his life before he was given his current task. As a matter of fact, he also has no recollection of whatever happens once he leaves the clan where he has been sent to collect new souls. He knows merely that one moment he’s there, and the next time will have slipped past him, and the dragons promised to their deities will be gone. He knows better than to question such occurrence. His existence alone is enough of a mystery that the dark imperial has long ago ceased to question things. He merely does his job, and takes no pleasure in it. The constant fear and mistrust from the others around him are barely noticed anymore, and Carrick learned a long time ago to stay away from the daily life of his host clan. Along with his partner, he hides nearby and only comes out during the night, when his presence is less likely to bother the inhabitants of the lair. That has done little to dispel the rumors about him, and hatchlings are scared into good behavior by stories of the dark, monstrous imp roaming the grounds at night. Although he accepts his task stoically, it wounds Carrick to see the little ones run away from him. The mistrust from his peers comes with age as they lose belief in the deities that rule them, but to have hatchlings cower in fear hurts the silent dragon. It seems the only one, other than Petra, to enjoy his company and not fear him is the little guardian protected by the queen. But then again, the small dragon is the only one who might have even darker secrets than his own. |
