Cormac
Forest Guardian
Grave Digger

Creature

Even before the queen and her clan made a home in the frozen mountain deep in the Fortress of Ends, there were legends about the woods that surround its base.

That deep into the realm of the Icewarden a forest of such size is unheard of - trees couldn’t grow in a soil that is frozen year-round, and should a sprout dare to bud in such unforgiving lands, the cold and winds would sure vanquish such rebellion in no time.
The presence of any flora, let alone one so strong, was enough to make both beastclan and dragonkind fear the place.

Among the strange trees, each one covered in runes from a language long lost, there is said to inhabit a creature that plagues the nightmares of dragonkind.
Not quite alive, and yet not allowed to die, the guardian of the forest is subject to wonder and speculation – for what could he have done to warrant such cruel curse.

Family

Before he became the grizzly creature to haunt the woods, Cormac was, many lives ago, a merchant living in a caravan. Traveling across Sornieth, his people brought music, cheer and many wares to trade wherever they went.

Those were the early days following the fall of the Pillar, war was a constant companion. Dragonking fought among themselves as well as with the previously peaceful beastclan in fierce battles for territory.
Cormac’s clan, as a traveling clan, remained as neutral in the face of such conflict as they could, never settling anywhere for long enough to be seen as a threat.

But there is no such thing as neutrality when faced with the remains of a war, and as the caravan kept traveling, more and more did they find clans razed to the ground by enemy attacks, battlefields littered with the belongings of those that were too late in fleeing.
On one such occasion Cormac saw the little hatchling for the first time.

Left alone either by design or by fate, the small imperial ambled aimlessly through the charred landscape, trying in vain to call back its parents, grasping at anything remotely familiar only to see it crumble to dust.

Despite the strong opposition from his companions – it was dangerous to have more than one imperial in any one clan, specially during times of war. Although clans were quick to fight each other for a home, they all remembered too well the threat that Emperors were to Sornieth – Cormac wanted to take the hatchling in.
Having seen the worst that life could offer in his travels, the male felt it was his duty to protect the small dragon with no clan of his own.

Promise

For a time the caravan lived in peace. Having lost his mate years before, Cormac enjoyed having a young of his own in the form of the rescued hatchling. Although the little one never spoke of its previous life and family, each day he seemed to miss them less, and it was a joy to see him slowly coming out of his shell as he got comfortable around his new clan.

But war has little concern for the lives it takes. In an ambush meant for a warring party that never arrived, Cormac’s clan was attacked by the local beastclan faction, which had been driven out of their territory and all but whipped out by the encroaching dragons.
The pacific caravan, with only a few weapons and no real skilled fighters, quickly succumbed to their attack.

Wounded, the imperial dragged himself to where a small shape lay curled in the dirt.
Roaring in grief, he cradled the young he had claimed for his own, and promised that he wouldn’t be alone again – not in life, and not in death. With his last breath, the imperial took a scroll – one containing enormous magical power – and altered his very being so that he could be near his child in their passing.

Bound

Scrolls to change one’s breed possess incredible magical power. Able to transform one’s outward appearance in the blink of an eye, those artifacts crafted by the very gods work in ways that dragonking cannot comprehend.
While one’s body may be changed instantly, there is powerful magic that lingers.
For reasons unexplainable, Cormac’s body was trapped in a halfway state at the moment of his passing. While the body was no longer that of an imperial – and thus unable to form the monstrosity known as an Emperor – some lingering part of his former self wouldn’t allow his body to die.
Instead, it seemed to tether him to the hatchling still in his arms, trying in vain to fuse them, and being unable to.

From such delicate balance the male, now a Nocturne, rose once again, along with his companion in death as well as in life at his last moments.
Cormac had found a way to fulfill his promise. While it was impossible for the two to form am Emperor, as long as they were together the magic that bound them would keep them alive, trapped in their undead state, but together nonetheless.

Guardian

Getting his bearings, Cormac’s heart sank as he saw the carnage all around him. The beastclan, terrified of the mangled dragon that slowly shuffled in their direction, scattered and ran away, never to return.

Alone, Cormac decided to honor his family in what way he could. The male had nothing but time; his body no longer required sleep, food or drink. Slowly, he buried each one of them on what would one day be the heart of the forest.
Mourning for the friends he had known his whole life, the nocturne hadn’t the heart to discourage the little imperial when he planted seeds - salvaged from the caravan’s possessions – over each grave.

Maybe it was the nature magic that flowed through the young dragon's blood, or maybe it was the magic that kept them alive expanded to keep the small buds alive as well; as time went by the seeds gave way to trees, and on each one Cormac carved the name of a fallen friend in the runes used by his people.
As the forest grew, many clans came and went from the neighboring territories. When a dragon passed, Cormac recorded their name and passing date on a new tree, marking forever their life and how much they mattered to those around them.
