Biography
Bones
Forest Guardian
Keeper of Trees Creature Even before the queen and her clan made a home in the frozen mountain deep in the Fortress of Ends, there were legends about the woods that surround its base. That deep into the realm of the Icewarden a forest of such size is unheard of - trees couldn’t grow in a soil that is frozen year-round, and should a sprout dare to bud in such unforgiving lands, the cold and winds would sure vanquish such rebellion in no time. The presence of any flora, let alone one so strong, was enough to make both beastclan and dragonkind fear the place. Among the strange trees, each one covered in runes from a language long lost, there is said to inhabit a small creature, one used by elder dragons to scare unruly hatchlings into behaving. Legend tells of a dark imperial young, normal at first sight, but upon closer inspection little more than a husk, following any who dare wander into the woods, constantly asking what tree they would like on their grave. Such an apparition is considered a bad omen, and only the truly brave – or stupid – would dare to enter the forest alone. Family The young imperial had few memories of his previous life before joining the caravan. Sometimes a movement or sound would spark a flash of recognition in his mind, and for a second he’d see the dragons that had birthed and raised him – but if he tried to grasp the memory it would vanish, leaving him confused and strangely sad. His dreams, however, had better luck in remembering things past; often keeping him awake at night, too afraid to go back to sleep and to the nightmares that awaited him. Cormac made those easier, though. The big imperial was always there to soothe and keep him company, and over time the dreams, too, faded to nothing. Barely able to remember his own name when he was first found, the first memory the small dragon had was of Cormac muttering that he was just skin and bones. He said it so much, eventually the young dragon just took to calling himself Bones. It annoyed his adoptive father a bit, but Bones considered his name as proof that he belonged to the older imperial. He couldn’t remember who he was before, but for Cormac he would be Bones. Bones to Bones Just like the previous life before meeting Cormac, Bones could remember very little of his last moments before waking up again in his new state. Flashes of feathers and piercing screams still scare the little imperial that never lived to grow old, but since his new form no longer requires sleep he isn’t as bothered about his nightmares anymore. After Cormac was done burying their friends that had fallen prey to the beastclan that attacked them, Bones just stood there, looking at the row after row of freshly piled snow. He always felt guilty for not remembering his real parents, and he never wanted to forget the family he had gotten with the caravan. Rummaging through what possessions he had managed to scavenge back; the hatchling came back to the freshly dug graveyard with a packet of seeds from his homeland in the nature realm. Not caring if it was pointless, he planted a seed where each one of his friends and family were laid to rest. Somehow whatever magic was still left in his sparked life from the frozen seeds, and soon there were saplings everywhere. Knowing they could never join any clan, the two were happy to remain tending to the trees, growing the forest in a last tribute to their loved ones. As years went by and clans came and went from neighboring lands it was Bones’ idea to keep adding trees, so that no dragon ever be forgotten as long as they stood there to watch over them. Ghost While he’s perfectly happy just to be around Cormac, sometimes his curiosity gets the best of him, and Bones sneaks near encampments and settlements for a peek at how much dragonkind had evolved in the centuries that they have stood guard over the forest. While his attempts at conversation don’t seem to go so well – it is important to know one’s tree preference, after all, especially if he is to honor them after they pass – the latest clan to occupy their mountain seems a bit friendlier towards him and his father. At least they haven’t sent any priests to exorcise them. Yet. |
