SUSPICION AND DISCONTENT

Nature-Bottle-Amariel.gif The red-eyed hatchlings were the most horrid thing she had ever seen. In the Gladeveins, its sopping soil hallowed by the Gladekeeper herself, this should have been impossible. Sundew wracked her brain about it day and night, keeping far away from the other nests in the Mud Puddle. The unhatched eggs of her neighbors seemed normal and healthy as they rested half-buried in the warm mud. The leafy pods still rustled gently and attracted fireflies like they should. But the infected eggs had looked normal enough too, so wasn't every egg laid by any neighbor worth suspicion?

The leaders of the clan, Osmunda and Reed, weren't suspicious enough. They weren't doing anything about this, even though the first clutch of red-eyed hatchlings had been their own. Maybe, Sundew thought, this was no accident and they had somehow schemed the clan's destruction all along. She complained to her mate and brooded over her own eggs anxiously, whatever good that would do. Pickerel couldn't form his own opinion on something if his life depended on it. Sundew admitted that only Pickerel's compatibility as a strong mate kept him in her presence at all. Always exasperated, she told him what to think.
