Fighter
A confident spiral with a heart of gold

MeltedGold was born in the Scarred Wasteland as the only surviving hatchling from a full nest of eggs. Growing up in the deadly plains surrounding the Wyrmwound, Gold soon had to learn how to defend herself against beasts, other dragons, and nature itself. While her parents gave birth to multiple other dragons, MeltedGold and her brother Goldenstring were the only ones making it to adulthood.

Most of her childhood and adolescence, Gold found herself struggling with the life she was living. The Scarred Wasteland is a place filled with danger and plague. Gold knew that there must be something more to life itself, more than living only to survive. But she did not dare to leave on her own.

One day, however, Gold’s fate suddenly changed. It had been a week of poisonous rain. Gold and her family stayed hidden in their cave, but the little rations they had were used. Hunger beset them. Desperate, Gold’s parents decided to venture out into the storm, trying to find food for them and their remaining children. They never returned home.

Gold and her brother waited for a long time, but eventually, Gold realized that if they stayed for longer, both of them would starve. Goldstring joined her without any resistance. When Gold looked into his eyes darting around restlessly, she could see desperation and madness. But she could not get herself to leave her only remaining family member behind. So she took him along, caring for both of them. With no goal in mind to go to, she headed east and her brother followed.

Outside the Scarred Wasteland, Gold encountered an entirely new world. She met dragons that would not attack her, but aid her on her journey. She discovered how her golden scales caused admiration and jealousy amongst other dragons. Over time, Gold grew more and more confident and changed from a mere survivor into a proud and self-confident dragon.

Her brother, in contrast, did not make it. Both his youth in the plague-troubled plains and the death of his parents had scarred him deeply. Gold lost him in the Tangled Woods, where he was lured away by ghost lights. Now completely on her own, Gold continued her path into the unknown,

After a journey filled with adventures, both pleasant and dangerous, Gold arrived at Focal Point. Not intending to stay for long, she searched for a cave to spend the night, when suddenly, noises of a fight caught her attention. Drawn by both curiosity and her warrior sense, Gold followed the sounds of commotion. She found Frosty, a male Tundra, surrounded by a group of centaurs. Without hesitating, Gold joined his side, her survivor instincts taking over. Within only moments, the fight was over, and the remaining centaurs fled.

Impressed by Gold’s skill, Frosty allowed her to stay with his lair. It was not too long after that, that he started courting her. Flattered, Gold accepted the courting, even though deep down within her, something seemed to resist the thought of settling down with Frosty. But Gold pushed it aside, too happy about the new home she had found. So she played along with the role of the responsible mother, even though inside of her, a voice kept whispering that this was not the life she was looking for.

But when Braise arrived at the lair, Gold felt the voices and the resistance within her growing louder. She noticed being drawn away from Frosty and even her children, and more towards the Imperial, with whom she felt confident and at peace. Gold left Frosty and her children, and joined Braise’s side. Even though Frosty gave her a place to stay, Braise gave her something he couldn’t: The feeling of finally having arrived where she was meant to be.

Aimlessly, Gold’s eyes stared at an unremarkable spot before her. Not too far from her, the ground dropped into a cliff. Gold could hear waves crashing against stone, a soothing and at the same time unsettling sound.

She came here to think, but instead of finding peace and clarity, her thoughts would not stop racing. Again and again, the talk she had had with Frosty the day before played in her mind.

“You are what?”
“I am leaving you, Frosty. I cannot do this anymore.”
“Bu-but why? Why all out of the sudden?”
“I wish I’d know. I just realized I feel trapped, unable to move. And staying won’t do anybody good, neither you, nor me, nor the kids.”

She know she had sounded confident back then, but the truth was that her heart had been racing. Making the decision to leave Frosty had not been an easy one. Telling him had been worse. Telling the children… Gold had left that to her former mate and she felt guilty and somewhat coward. But she did not know what to say. She had spent the night in a different cave, far away from her former home. And while she had felt some of the pressure lifting from her when talking to Frosty, she didn’t feel as light and relieved as she expected.

A soft noise made Gold jump up, turning around hastily. She relaxed when she saw Braise approaching her. “Hello, Braise!”, she greeted her friend, trying to hide her mood behind a mask of enthusiasm. The sun reflected on the Imperial’s beautiful scales, her throat and stomach glistering like a heap of jewels. She looked gorgeous, but there stood worry in her gaze.

“Hello, Gold. A-are you alright?”

Of course. The faked enthusiasm would not fool Braise. She was too clever and too observant.

Gold let the mask fall and sighed deeply. “I…” The words were so hard to find. Usually, Gold was good with words, but now… “I left Frosty.” Gold lowered her gaze to the ground.

She heard the soft steps of Braise coming closer. “But why, Gold?” There was no reproach in her words, just honest confusion and worry.

“I… I felt trapped. I know, I should be happy. I had everything most dragons wish for. I had a husband, who loved me, I had wonderful children. But I also had responsibilities… I… I am no mother. I tried, but I failed. My children are wonderful, but I… couldn’t love them with all my heart.” Gold felt a sting in her chest when finally putting into words what had troubled her for so long. But she couldn’t stop the words from flowing out of her.

“I failed my children by being unable to love them like they deserved it. I could not stop my head from asking What if. I was insecure and overwhelmed. And I hated this feeling every day, every second of my life. And I… I couldn’t…” Gold’s voice died down, she felt tears filling her eyes. She tried to blink them away, but they were resistant.

And suddenly, she felt Braises snout softly nudging her cheek. The mighty Imperial hugged her tightly, wrapping her wings around her. Gold swallowed dryly. She felt… save. Save and cared for.

“Braise, I…” She fell silent again, feeling for the other’s warmth and breathing. Braise didn’t say a word, waited for her to continue. Gold was incredibly thankful. “I realized I’d rather be with you.”

She felt a shiver running through the Imperial. But instead of letting go as Gold had expected, Braise hugged her even tighter, pressing her cheek against Gold’s. Gold closed her eyes and allowed herself a happy sigh. At last, she felt free.
