"Oftentimes progress and healing demand the greatest sacrifice."

  A B O U T
Dragons can instinctively feel her age and power in the amount of magic she exudes constantly, in how their teeth and bones tingle whenever she passes near. Most are either too afraid or too intimidated to seek out her presence or speak with her for more than a few moments. She minds perhaps more than she lets on, preferring her own company over than of others.

The majority of her time is spent undisturbed in her private study, in the hollow of a tree set with beautiful stained glass windows. She often pours over old scrolls from Tamlin's archive, providing the occasional correction and helping to translate some of the words from now long-dead dialects.

Aurelia is a dragon fairly set in her ways, particular about the way she likes things to be done. She rarely accepts outside help and forbids all but a few dragons from touching her things, most of which are powerful artifacts. She also prefers to light her rooms with lamps, candles, and occasionally her own magic, rather than allowing the clan's precocious electrician to install electric lights.

  H I S T O R Y
Aurelia was born millennia ago to an immensely powerful magus who declared herself a minor god, amassing a cult-like group of followers and demanding they worship her. During those early days when magic was law, they obeyed eagerly.

Aurelia inherited her mother's magical potential and was groomed from birth to take her place. And when she finally passed away after a lifespan of unknown but likely enormous length, Aurelia became the new Tyrant Queen, set upon a pedestal to be revered just as she had been. With an entire clan at her beck and call, she was selfish, greedy, and willfully ignorant. Her clan stole, lied, and cheated to bring her wealth, and she reveled in it for centuries.

But as the years wore on, she grew bored. She sought a mate, hoping that a child would bring her some measure of happiness, just as her birth had for her mother. But when her son hatched, she still felt empty. Regardless, she took him from his father to be raised under her wing in the same manner as she had been: as an heir, rather than a child.

As he grew, she often wondered if he could sense that she didn't love him perhaps as much as she should. Eventually he grew embittered, turning to his own devices, studying ancient evils and black arts where she could not see.

The turn of every new century brought change. Sornieth began to shift from a world of divine power and superstition to one of innovation and progress. Each successive generation seemed to care less for the old gods, and less still for those who called themselves children of the gods. Travellers were happy to join her clan at first, sensing her magic and perhaps believing that she would protect them. As soon as they learned she would do nothing for them, they left.

She panicked as she felt her grip begin to slip after so many years. She was forced to realize that her birthright did not guarantee her respect, that she had to be worthy of such an honor. Being a leader meant leading the dragons beneath her, and making the best choices for them. She had time to think. And she resolved to try.

Digging into her own enormous coffers, she supported her subjects as many came and went. She learned combative magic and encouraged dragons that showed a similar inclination to learn to fight. By studying old spells, she learned to set up wards around her lands, keeping her clanmates safe from attack and disaster. Over time, more dragons seemed willing to stay.

Aurelia tried to teach her son her new ways of ruling, but the centuries she spent grooming him into a new tyrant could not be so easily undone. He had been promised the absolute power she had wielded, and nothing less would satisfy him. If her subjects would not bow to him as their new Queen, he would force them to. Consumed with hatred for his mother and poisoned by hundreds of years of exposure to The Shade, he turned on the clan.

Aurelia had a moment of perfect clarity: she cared for her dragons deeply, and she would fight with every scrap of magic within her to protect them. The battle nearly destroyed her, costing many of her clanmates their lives. She just barely managed to cleanse him of the Shade's corruption, in the process transforming him back into a hatchling that bore no memory of the events up until that point. She gave him away to a different clan, to be raised with loving parents she hoped would shape him into a much better drake.

She cared for him enough to let him go. And she cared enough for her clan to realize that it was time for her to step down and allow another dragon to lead them, one decided by the dragons themselves. The clan would never again have a Queen, and she is content for it to be this way. Aurelia had never not been a ruler. It was an adjustment, of course. But one that she embraced with a certainty she had never before felt.
